You won't know if it does you will only know if it doesn't help.

We don't Bitch about the things that work only about having to pay for them and when they fail.

I think it's supposed to be that the huge creature called "deficit" will not actual be stimulated by a single cup of coffee. Maybe there will be a tiny bounce, and then right back to our foundering economy.

Actually, looking at the cartoon again I feel it's open to all kinds of interpretation.

I am of the opinion that the stimulus package won't achieve jack nor shit.

i wanted to pay up my bills and get an A/C since my house doesn't have one and i live in NC and don't want to fry this summer and a washer and dryer. But then my ex calls and says "kat, i didn't pay the car payment last month and they are going to come take it from you, so you need to come up with it!" i swear, ex's, can't live with them and social security wouldn't pay enough after their dead!

Since I used bill money to pay for GLLA while it was still cheap, the money's going to bills.

And if there happens to be fifty dollars or so left over, who am I to turn down a lovely new pair of black skinny jeans?

If SSI (supplemental security income) is your only income, then your dad was correct in that you don't qualify.  Because SSI is not considered a social security benefit*, it is not included in qualifying income.

*social security benefits are derived from taxes you have paid into the system. Since SSI is not calculated based on prior income, it is classified differently than social security income.

if i understand correctly, its not too late and yes you would qualify.....check out irs.gov and find out.

edited after reading calis post to add.......i have a friend who is on ssi, after nearly losing his leg due to a blockage.....irs actually sent him mail telling him to be sure to file even though he didnt have to. he is getting his refund, just had to write name and address and ssn on a 1040 and send in.  cant hurt to try.

I'm certainly no tax expert, so please don't take what I have to say as the final word, but I have done a lot of studying to help other people.  You do have to write a little more than name & SS on a 1040; you have to list your income. Perhaps your friend had other income? Private disability income perhaps? Anyway, from the FAQ on the IRS webpage:

Q. Does my supplemental security income (SSI) qualify as Social Security benefits for the purpose of the Economic Stimulus Payment?
A. No, supplemental security income (SSI) payments are not considered Social Security benefits and thus cannot be included. Because SSI is not taxable, it is not reported to you on Form SSA-1099. Only the amount shown in Box 5 of Form SSA-1099 is consider to qualify as Social Security benefits for purposes of the Economic Stimulus Payments.

Q: I normally don't need to file a tax return. How do I know if I'm one of those people who may be eligible to receive an economic stimulus payment?

A: This group includes some recipients of Social Security, Railroad Retirement or veterans' benefits as well as taxpayers who do not make enough money to normally have to file a 2007 tax return. For example, this can include low-income workers, those who receive Social Security benefits or veterans’ disability compensation, pension or survivors’ benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2007.

Here is the FAQ page on who qualifies for the payment, and how to fill out the 1040A.

That is a common myth.  From the IRS:

What is it? It's an economic stimulus payment that more than 130 million households will receive starting in May. It's not taxable, and it won't reduce your 2007 or 2008 refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

On a side note, it seems H&R Block filled out the paperwork for all of us who filed there, and are contacting people to tell them they should all get cheques.  Good to know!

RuheMaus, I hope they aren't charging you for that, because if you filed a return, there was no other paperwork to fill out.  If you got a "RAL" or refund anticipation loan, then I'm not sure if you get a check directly from the IRS or if the IRS pays the RAL people and the RAL people pay you.

Mine will be held for 6 months before going to the ex for back support...but I will get his which will be held for 25 days for HIS back support....and is marginally less than what I paid in, but thats okay. It makes his life difficult and I am happy about that.

When I get it, its going into savings for the winter. Construction is difficult at best and in the winter its a straight up pain in the ass. So...might as well plan now for then.

Do I think it will help?

Eh...who knows. Maybe. After reading Gris and Merc go back and forth, Im still looking up words and trying to understand what they are talking about. Basically, I can see the cycle that it will start. Even if you pay bills with it you are paying some ones salary...Even if you buy gas with it, or groceries or what ever, its still in some what stimulation to the economy, at least the best I can understand.

-shrugs- But what do I know. I dont even have a check book cos I cant add for shit.
