quote:
(Matthew 4:19) "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." Evangelical, maybe, but I don't see it as especially political. quote:
If you ask someone to follow a set example isn't that political; promising a better world in exchange for living a certain way? It can be political, but I don't think it has to be. Advertisers, for instance, constantly promise us better lives if we buy their products or follow their advice, but I'm not sure that's necessarily political. Finally did what I should have done before my last post and looked up political in the dictionary. Here's what they say at merriam-webster.com: 1 a: of or relating to government, a government, or the conduct of government b: of, relating to, or concerned with the making as distinguished from the administration of governmental policy 2: of, relating to, involving, or involved in politics and especially party politics 3: organized in governmental terms <political units> 4: involving or charged or concerned with acts against a government or a political system <political prisoners> I don't see Jesus in these definitions, except maybe four in that the religious authorities tried to persuade Pilate that Jesus posed a political threat. quote:
Isn’t religion just ancient politics? No, religion is the still-ongoing human effort to make spiritual sense of the world. At least, that's how I see it. I'll grant you that religion was often a tool of ancient politics.
