Trust you to know the intricate details of the psychotropic potential of Absinthe, Hippie. Tsk tsk.

Ever had Pastis ? It's very similar - I learnt to swim in a pool of it, down on the port of Marseille.

You know, I don't think I ever have. Not even Pernod. I've had most of the other anise-flavored stuff, though. One of my rare indulgences is German Honey Schnapps. Gotta dilute that.

I haven't had any hard liquor since Xmas 2005, when a friend's father brought some beautiful cheesecake down from NY and we poured some Amaretto.

You know how some people are baseball connoiseurs? They know everything about all the clubs and whatnot? Well, I'm that way about psychedelics. [sm=hippie.gif]

Eh?  The 2 drinks are dissimilar in both taste, and effect.

Unless your point of reference is meths, of course.

SHAME on you.   Hurricanes are for tourists.  The two things you have to do are:

Have a sazerac, and, if the season is right, have some King Cake.

OK so in conclusion can i get this product now in the USA ? Is it the same in other non banned countries ?Or is it a watered down  ingredients missing  type thing . I would LOVE to get some and perform my own ritual over and over again , getting the ritual spoons , the ritual glasses ,the ritual ice , using the ritual flame and seeing those ritual pink elephants . If the ban has been lifted  with the pure drink i rejoice and i shall start seeking , if not i would love to get a bottle sent to me oooh Uk  pals  whooho .

Not wishing to piss in your chips or anything, but if you’re expecting a combination of Feuerzangenbole and LSD then you’re going to be a bit disappointed.

It’s “just” (and I speak as a fan) a very nice, very alcoholic drink, which has MILD stimulant properties, most of which concentrate on the brain, and some on the eyes.

However, for some odd reason, an evening spent on the stuff, in company, usually results in a) a story you can recount later, b) an arrest record for doing something very, very silly or c) (if you’re lucky), both.

From the posted links it would appear that the “legal” stuff in the US is much like the milder of the eastern European varieties, ie alcoholic, but not especially “stimulating” … the best stuff was always the “made locally” version, but if you’d like some Euro commercial stuff (some of which is still v yummy), I’ll happily post you some the next time I pop across to France (about every 3 months), although I would think the postage would be an arm and a leg.

Or what about coming over to Europe for a holiday?  You could call it "research" [;)]

Well something certainly does something, because “plain” alcohol it isn’t.  If you compare it to, say, other alcoholic drinks of a similar alcohol content there’s definitely something different about Absinthe, although the eastern European commercial stuff is probably the least different in that respect.

Justme696 -> RE: Absinthe? (5/4/2008 4:43:54 AM)

Absinth had his effect because of its production process. They used materials that slowly made you crazy...like led did in soda when the Romans lived.
It were not the ingredients that caused it. OFten (many greats poets and writers) drunk Absinthe and used Opium together. Drunk and high..can have a nice effect.
Since 2 years (or 3 ) Absinth is legal again in Europe because of changed and cleaner productions methods.
The taste is..to get used too..but the ritual to make its...is fun. (fire, ice water..sugar..absinth changing color)
And it makes you drunk fast.

Btw..don't buy cheap fake Absinth....buy the real one...even though it is more expensive.

Ok.  Here's a followup question...

The company I work for does random drug screenings.

Does thujone or any other ingredients in absinthe show up in drug screenings?

No idea.  I only drink the stuff [;)]

Random drug tests?  That’s awful!  I’d never work for a company that insisted on doing that to me.  Not that I indulge much these days, but even so, the mere concept is appalling – don’t you have rights that protect you against that?  Or does your job involve transporting people (planes, trains) or firearms/law enforcement?  I can see it in the latter 2 cases, but otherwise I’d just say “no thanks” and work somewhere else.

Justme696 -> RE: Absinthe? (5/4/2008 5:06:44 AM)

they should check your alcohol promillage in your blood, absinthe is not a drug :P

MissAnthropic -> RE: Absinthe? (5/4/2008 5:08:34 AM)

Absinthe is the nectar of the gods. Its available for sale in Oz or you could probably order some in from their website at http://www.greenfairy.com.au/

Basically it is an Anise flavoured drink ( like ouzo, jagermeister,sambucca, pernod) but bitter. Think black jelly beans but bitter.

The ritual is  half the fun. It has a very high alcohol content of 60 - 70 percent, and the thujone has a mild halucinagenic affect.

Tip - dont not firetwirl after drinking two bottles between 4 people. You are likely to see lots of pretty prisms and the world will turn very slowly while you fail to notice your hair is on fire, to the amusement and hilarity of the fellow drunken new year revelers.

cheers

A bit of both kinda...
I used to be a truck driver and they had screenings there, but now I build towers for large windmills which are very large and very heavy with little room for error safety-wise.  I also have a CCW (concealed pistol permit) and a positive drug screen would take that away.  I just never bothered with drugs nor got interested.  It doesen't bother me much because I have nothing to hide as far as that aspect of my life.  Don't get me wrong, I do more than my fair share of alcohol...

I think I'm more in love with the ritual aspect of it (absinthe) than seeing green fairies.

MissAnthropic -> RE: Absinthe? (5/4/2008 5:28:24 AM)

Will I upset you all and tell you of Oz's new craze of a few years called "fairy bombs" where absinthe is mixed with a gurana fruit drink :D

It's on the link I gave before: http://www.greenfairy.com.au/

Heh.  It’s amazing the number of stories that start “… and we sat down and had some Absinthe” and end up with someone either spending a night in the cells or injuring themselves in a highly amusing way.

If products were required to have only 100% honest slogans, Absinthe’s would be “it seemed like a good idea at the time”.

I've got a lovely little faded scar that runs the length of the little finger on my left hand, on the outer edge.  Note to self: Absinthe and juggling knives do not mix.

And no, I can’t juggle either (well only with balls, not clubs).  Why I thought I could is another matter.  Still, half a tube of super-glue later I was fine, and didn't have to leave the evening to go to hospital.  What caused people to fall about was the way I apparently just threw all the knives up in the air at the same time, and then proceeded to work out the details of dealing with them (badly) til later.

If you like “silly-drunk” alcoholic drinks that have a nice ritual, try Feuerzangenbole – it’s “only” alcohol, but it gets people smashed in a similarly entertaining way to Absinthe.  The way little gouts of flame burble up out of the wine mixture when you're towards the end of making it is lovely, like a primeval swamp that’s gone seriously broken-arrow.

L'heure verte

The Green Fairy: it was all a pretty myth fabricated by absinthe manufacturers [:D] .

Hmmmmmm … I can see where drugs would be a no-no where that sort of thing was concerned.  Do they alcohol breath-test you when you turn up as well?  And I can see the logic behind people with firearms not being high too.

If you want a ritualised drink with nice effects, and one that is very sociable, without having difficult to get hold of (for you) ingredients, try Feuerzangenbole (sugar cubes work almost as well as sugar cones if you can't get the cones) – it’s fun to make, tastes great, and seems to maintain that “silly-drunk” stage better than almost any other drink I’ve tried.  Lovely for a long evening with some friends, just sitting around getting silly and talking cobblers.
