Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!  I refuse! I know the halfway decent vinyards have promised to keep the cork.

I do not mind paying an extra buck or two to get good wine.

Gwyn..

Wineries are businesses and they are in it for profits. Within the next 10 years,  95% of wines under $100 will be screw tops or box. because they are cheaper and they protect the wine better. As for synthetic corks, they leak way too much and again..cost way more that screw tops and boxes.  Will you $350.00 bottles still have cork and lead foil? Probably but your really good $20 bottle will not.

C'est la vie.... *sighs*

I might as well start wearing those ugly rubber shoes with the holes in them like all the damn tourists... and go every where in a pony tail. *sighs*

Oh no.. not the screw top and box o' wine crap

Better get used to it gwyn. Withing in the next 10 years or so all wine with the exception of maybe Champange and some really high end reds will be screw top or box.

Don’t fret.  Synthetics are improving all the time, and they’ll rush in to the middle ground as their average price comes down with economies of scale.

Cork will *really* be a luxury item though, for the same reason.

I was talking to a friend at the weekend, and we agreed that what the industry needs is a "snap-off" connector that requires a fairly complex tool to open it, so you’re get the ritual, and a nice “pop” type closure, but one which didn’t rely on cork, or anything similar.

My best guess was something that looked like a cross between something Baron Vladimir Harkonnen would use to tear out someone’s entrails (in an artistic and defined arc), and something that looked as if it could be used to balance a set number of angels on the head of a pin.

In stainless steel or carbon fibre.

Sadly, further research was halted as we realised we’d run out of Absinthe.

Let this be a salutary lesson to us all.

"Now I don’t know about you, but the thought of 15% of the world’s wine going straight down the plughole is one which causes me to weep.  All that lovely wine, ruined by microbes … cut off in its prime, as it were, and unable to unleash its glorious, fruity and “sunshine in a glass” capacity is tragic."

*Gasp* I had *no* idea that so much of the lovely stuff was wasted by contamination from real cork.

At least they have come up with other methods of keeping it safe for our consumtion. *big smile*

I do not mind drinking the mid-range cheaper stuff as I am cooking, or just setting around. I quite sadly can no longer drink any reds that are not cooked into something. *sobs* Damn tannins give me migraines.

I do as much recycling as humanly possible. Not sure on the wine box recycling... I need a bigger fridge to fit one of those babies in my fridge for cooking. I can see where the not knowing how much was drank can be bad. *chuckles* I had a friend who used to "lose her box" while out walking from camp to camp of friends.

Gwyn

I’m trying to work out if “losing her box” is a euphemism or not.

PS: Tannin migraines are an awful concept.  My sincere sympathies.

PPS: Fear not, I’ll cover your share so that the red wine lake grows no bigger.  Go me.
