Ok...I'm confused.

I went to the liquer store earlier this evening, and on the shelf I saw a bottle of absinthe.  Yes, you heard me correctly.  Absinthe.  I was under the impression that absinthe was highly illegal, on par with hardcore street drugs.  Granted, it was nearly $60 a bottle.

When was absinthe legalized?  Or is this a completely different substance marketed as absinthe?

You *do* get what you pay for. Verte Suisse if you are going to bother.

and the spoons and nifty gadgets for it are well.. Nifty as Hades.

If you go to NOLA... you have to do 2 things.. drink a Huricane.. and drink an Absinthe properly.

The question is: how much thujone is in the bottle? On the other hand, many say it doesn't ultimately matter as the wonders of absinthe may be more in the high alchohol content as opposed to any possible hallucinogens.

Acutally Hippie, I kinda have to call you out on this one...the difference there (with  Calling a sparkling wine "Champagne" does not make it so) is the fact that Chamapagne is made in Champagne France.......
Where as Americanized Absinthe (if you had read) doesn't have wormwood... which is a missing ingredient (as opposed to simply being made somewhere in particular)..
Anyhow....it's still Absinthe........Just like Coca Cola is still Coca Cola (without the original cocaine)

Maybe calling something "absinthe" doesn't actually make it absinthe. Okay. Whatever...I guess you are coming at this from a thujone purist angle.

But if you are you saying that French champagne is better than California sparkling wine, then I have to disagree.

In the end, labels don't mean anything.

Actually, Gimp. I have to pants you (TY cjan ) on this. Champagne is made in the area centered around the cities of Riems and Epernay approx. 140km. NE of Paris.

The makers of sparkling wine can call it whatever they want in the US, but certainly not in France.

Inasmuch as my point is evidently less than clear, let's try this:
If Absinthe is characterized by its thujone content (here's another link: http://www.3dchem.com/molecules.asp?ID=142; note the absence of nitrogen. Salvinorin A also lacks nitrogen, but is the most potent natural psychedelic known.), then is it Absinthe if it lacks thujone?

The stuff made local to me has wormwood grande. What it may not have is a significant thujone content. Of that I am simply unsure as I have yet to see a proper review or bottle label.

I have been meaning to try it, but I keep forgetting.



Next time I hit the east bay, I'll make the effort.

Since thujone exhibits either no, or at best very slight, psychoactive elements it's pretty unlikely it ever did cause hallucinations. The amount you'd have to consume to get anything closer to noticable effects would see you long dead from liver failure before you got halfway there.
Combine high alcohol levels with a reputation for making you go all "trippy with the fairies" though and it doesn't matter about the thujone, people will quite happily convince themself they're getting something more than just incredibly drunk.

No, that isn't what I am saying. It's a bad analogy, though.

After having read some more about the thujone content of pre-ban Absinthe, I have to reverse my previous stance and concur that Absinthe, if made like the old Absinthes were, is Absinthe.

For gimp: I didn't know about the "specific circumstances" regarding use of the word "champagne". Used to be in the US there were no restrictions, just like "Chablis" (which is a region in Burgundy) and "Burgundy" (where very specific grape varieties, predominantly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, must be used).

As others said.  The last bottle we bought we had it imported and it cost us 300.  No idea the size of the bottle you saw...but without going to look...I'd say ours was around the 20ounce size.  Even though it isn't measured in ounces.

Green and red as well.

As others said...its just cheap absinthe.  Low grade, doesn't have what absinthe really needs.

I've had both the old 'illegal' with thujone, and the curent versions being sold all over the US (although maybe not in the quantities that would cause a real bohemian to hallucinate and pass out), and found it to be all about the ritual and the legend.
