Gas prices havent changed my life at all. Jonestly, if you think about it the stuff is pretty fairly priced! Look at a cup of starbucks coffee or a gallon of milk and stop to think that you dont need to drill miles underground to get it, to build pipelines and tankers, to bulild refineries. (Just drive through Pasadena or LaPorte Texas to see what it takes to make crude oil into gas!) and then pipe / barge / and truck it to every mom and pop outlet in the USA. Keep in mind also that its an extremely hazardous material with a tendancy to evaporate, explode, or leave behind a costly environmental legacy.... When you put it in perspective $3.44 a gallon isnt so bad I mean hell - Mountain Dew is a $1.49 for 2 liters so roughly $3 a gal and its sugar water... I drive three vehicles regularly, all of which have V-8 Engines in them and it doesnt bother me. Then again 110LL Aviation Gas is going for $6.85 a gallon as of today, and I burn that at a rate of 8.5 gph. Filling the boat with diesel is $240+ (60 gallons at $4.05) so by comparisson the cars are cheap to fill.

The BP station near my house was sporting a price tag of $3.63 per gallon as of about 9:45 pm.

I carpool anyway because I'm an utter failure at driving, so I haven't yet experienced the price of a full tank firsthand. It does suck having to chip in extra gas money, though, and I don't get to see friends who live over in Orlando as often because they flat-out can't afford the price to drive out here. I'm a lonelier Pyrr than usual.

It doesn't really affect me as I only gas up once or twice a month but of course I don't like paying the high prices for it.

couple of things
1. gasis cheaper per galleon to get then the other liquids you mentioned, it has a high cost at first, but considering that it doesnt need refrigeration, and that you get so much per rig, the price evens out rather well (especially since, apparently, the guys digging it up arent paoid nearly so much as I thought they were)

2 Im fairly certain Mt Dew is more hazardous than Crude Oil. but it sure does taste better :P

Now come the point where you ask where I get my data from, right? Te company I work for actually supplies services to oil rigs all around the globe, and just a few days ago a group of the head bosses came down to meet us (I dont remember thiier titles, cause I didnt care) The one I remember clearly is Si, the lead tech, since he spent a lot of time with me going over thier setup (internet and phone) :P

If you arent bothered by the price, great! but dont try to compare different substances that are created differently to find out whether one is reasonable, it kinda makes you look the ass

yeah on mountain dew. 2 cans of any soda would be toxic on me.

--yesderday i got my bike working- peddled to the dollar store for an OTC item. some slick teens nearby- so I brought the bike into store with me. it was hardly noticed. [the teens im sure could cut the lock]

a while back i picked up a 18 speed mountain bike for $25 at a moving sale. so that was 2.5 miles. I get 20 MPG, [3.70 a gallon] .37 + .37 + .18 = .90 gosh. more then i thought!!!

also my 91 s-10 gets better mileage then my 98 lumina, 24 vs 20. tho my sample might be scewed.

Gas here in central Arkansas is about $3.48 a gal. unleaded.

My wife and I started a garden this year, and the neighbors have graciously helped in the initial plow and by loaning us their tiller.

About a year ago, I sold off my Ford V-8 van. (I could see what was coming.) and instead, I bought a Chevy diesel pickup truck. I swapped out the natural rubber fuel lines for a synthetic, and have been running it on recycled resteraunt cooking oil. (If you want to know how, just go to your local library, there are several good books out on this.) Now, I spend a few hours one Saturday a month collecting it, and another couple hours filtering and "reacting" the fats out of it to make biodiesel. As such, I pay about $0.20 a gallon. This is great during the summer months, but I do run into the gelling problem in the colder motnths. I plan on adding a tank and fuel line heater for next winter.

This will last maybe another yer or two... then I expect everyone will be doing it, and I'll have trouble finding the leftover oil.

But I'm looking for a motorcycle. Good on gas, and also a good excuse to buy leather...

I just filled my gas tank today at $3.65 and I think my car gets 32 miles per gallon. I am a substitute teacher who wants to become a real teacher. However, in order for me to get paid for my work, I must travel to another county that is roughly 35-50 miles from my residence. My local school board has placed a hiring freeze for new substitute teachers and there have also been no openings on hiring any new teachers, either.

I have also learned to conserve and I don't go out that much because I am also trying to save money. However, I would like to be hired full-time and make some decent wages.

My point was the infrastructure costs involved in production. Look at a single offshore rig or a refinery and they are engineering marvels. There is a refinery in LaPorte that goes on for 2.8 MILES to drive past it. A 2.8 MILE rats nest of expensive Tig weleded stainless steel piping, Sriously you should see a refinery at night - its beautiful thousands of electric lights, dozens of welding arcs, the flares on the stacks... its post card beautiful. Go on the Ocean Star rig in Galveston, TX and you'll be amazed. Sure the oil companies earn billions but they also spend billions on infrastructure and support. The local coca-cola distributor doesnt need to operate fleets of $500 an hour helicopters to fly out supplies daily. They dont need to operate saturation diving systems, or to build piplelines for thousands of miles to convey their products.

Besides the infrastructure there is liability. A piece of real estate that used to be a gas station is essentially unmarketable because of the environmental liability that carries with it from decades of minor spills and leaks. When you look at other liquids - gas is quite fairly priced.

average price of a gallon in my area is $4.00. i have turned in my two week notice at work because it is 40 miles from my home and a little over half of each check was going to gas. just too ridiculous to me to keep that job.
i have since pulled my bike out of storage and have been using it to find a new job.

Price here on hawaii island is over 4.05. I don't have to drive far, only about a mile to work, but I need to carry my tools with me.

Seeing these stories made me glad I have a small car that sits lot to the ground. It's significantly harder to syphon gas from small, low-sitting cars than SUV's, vans and busses. Bet all those redneck guys with the jacked up trucks are regretting their customization choice now.

The low to the ground argument kind of fails next to the hole punch thing. I could pop a metro as easily as anything else that way. I just wouldn't get as much gas. Mind you, I have always thought that the so called benefits of lifting a truck that you use for anything but shows was outweighed by the extra costs. I was disowned by the other rednecks for that and branded a heretic.
