"Of the 200-plus destinations across the world that Rough Guides covers, there is none so fascinating, beautiful and culturally diverse, yet as insular, self-important and irritating, as England," it says. "The only certainty for visitors is that however long you spend in England and however much you see, it still won't be enough to understand the place"........

"The English are devoted to sarcasm on a gigantic scale. Often mistaken as coldness or hostility, the warmth [of the English] is in the humour, a sort of national solidarity that is bred in the bone"......

'Might interest an English poster or two.......

I think you chose the best paragraph of that guide it is always scathing of the UK from what I hear.

It's a mixed review - in the same vein as the quote in the OP.

Some cities and towns get a bad write-up - e.g. Exeter and Blackpool - others come in for better treatment - e.g. Birmingham and Manchester.

Well as a fairly regular traveler to Britain I'd have to say the author(s) are idiots.

Sure there are some odd things and some plain unpleasant things, the suburbanization of the countryside primarily IMO, but its a wonderful place to visit. London is my second favorite city anywhere, Chicago is where my heart will always be. The countryside is in places exactly perfect. The sports fans show me that I'm not obsessed with sports. The politics are a reprieve from the dreary mess here, I love taping question time off the BBC and watching it even though I don't keep up with british politics. British pubs are superior to American bars in virtually every way. And I simply can't find a decent chicken tikka masala in the US.

When's the Guide To Rough Trade In England expected to be published? That's the real burning question.

Looks as though you can order your copy now, if you don't want to do the field work yourself  .

I passed through London many times when I was young.  I've always wanted to go back and see everything again, but from a much older perspective.

The politics are a reprieve from the dreary mess here

The Democrat contest is receiving a good write up over here. It's farcical in some respects, perhaps, but at least it's generating interest; political commentators over here are craving interest in politics because so many people have given up on the democratic process and have no faith in their vote making any diffference whatsoever. The politics may be dreary over there - I wouldn't know - but every cloud has a silver lining, as demonstrated by our political commentators looking on enviously at the interest being generated.

British pubs

I suppose you'd have to place this in the context of the culture. While we have clubs for just about everything, the pub is where we really come alive and morph from private, home-orientated individuals into social animals.

In terms of sport obsessed, the amount of sports played and watched over here is phenomenal, but I suppose that is only to be expected by a nation obsessed with games - hence the exporting of many of our sports, and off-shoot sports, around the world.

In terms of the rough guide criticisms:

Self-important? I'd agree with this.

Insular? in some respects, but the English tend to be quite knowledgable with regard to world affairs so a blanket statement doesn't quite add up. I think the authors are confusing indifference to foreigners and being insular.
