Status: offline 		Oooo scening in Leeds Castle would be fun - there are some pretty good places (there's a pro dungeon in Stanley for example which is pretty good).

I couldn't imagine living somewhere else, I work extensively in Europe and am constantly depressed when the only English TV channel is CNN - if that's the level of TV news reporting in the US I can understand why so many Americans watch BBC World!!

I wouldn't say Brits are insular though - you have only to look at the immigration statistics to see that we welcome pretty much anyone from anywhere and our stats on emmigration point to fairly wideranging views on desiring to move abroad.  Perhaps the writer of the Rough Guide had a poor experience in a pub in the middle of nowhere and assumed that all Brits are like village Brits (I am one from the south west, traditionally an area backward in outlook and notoriously difficult to break into as an outsider, although I now live in small town in Northern England) and they can be a little standoffish to people not from their village/area.  Just takes talking to people to change that though......

This is entirely my opinion but for me it comes down to community.

IME in the US bars are for drinking in. There might be a game on the TV and the regulars bellied up to the bar might know each other well enough to chat but ultimately that's about all there is.

The pubs I've been to in Britain have been much more of a community experience. Sure you are expected to buy and lift a pint or three but the people are simply more social.

I think it might have a lot to do with what time people in the UK go to pubs versus when Americans go to bars. I've heard that closing times are getting later but pubs in England generally close around 11pm while bars in the US stay open well past midnight and aslate as 3 or 4 AM on the weekend.

Seriously, i am trying to see the Britsh Isles before the end of fall.  I've a couple sofas in Brixton and one in Ealing that i'm assured of...but London is a pretty small part of Britian.  i just think backpacking cross country might not be so appealing for a gal in her 30's.    (EARLY 30's)

Yes, there are some that are proper community meeting places, where a good time can be had by all. There are also "boozers" which are generally populated by the older generation, and rarely see any trouble.

But there are also quite a few which are very dangerous places into which to venture for anyone who is unknown to the troglodyte regulars or unable to exceed their capacity for random violence against strangers.

It is unfortunately the case that these three types will generally appear very similar from the outside. Only upon entry does their speciation become clear, and it is all to do with who the clientele are.

Best advice is to ask the locals, about the locals.

That's very true. The thing I really missed when I was living in continental Europe was the atmosphere of an English pub. A good pub almost literally what the word pub comes from, a public house ... someone's home, opened up as a business, and highly social, but still their home. You're spot on when you call it a community experience.

It's not a closing time thing; English pubs retain their atmosphere even though they now close later, and sometimes much much later. That opinion is cast from revisiting old locals on occasional visits back home, so perhaps it's not absolutely on the pulse.

I've not been in Ireland long enough yet to suss how Irish pubs work.

The North of England is an interesting place....superb landscapes and heritage.......I'd certainly recommend it...

Status: offline 		Due to the brevity of my trip I didn't get to see as much of the country as I would have liked... but I did see London, Harrogate (and some of the most breathtaking countryside I've ever seen around it), and a bit of the West Midlands.
I'm looking forward to returning.

In my experience, we tend to expect others to bend to our way of getting things done, particularly in one key area - humour - which isn't always easy to penetrate for the untrained eye. If you get it, you'll have a great time here; if you don't, you'll be lost.

In terms of making people feel welcome, it depends what you use as a measure of welcome. Hand on heart, guests from another country will not have to put their hands in a pocket for a beer for the duration of their stay (were they in the company of the people I know). At the same time though, no one I know would be remotely interested in their country, and wouldn't even attempt to strike up a conversation about it. If you know nothing of England, then you'll have problems because the converation in the pub will revolve around everyday English life - including in the company of foreigners.
