Well I would prefer we knelt them down , and put one in the back of their head, as we can LEGALLY do to them since they are taking up arms while not serving in the uniformed military service of a recognized nation - but unfortunately the embedded media crybabies would really whine about that.

However, since we choose not to do summary field executions, as are permissible under the law, sure detaining and torturing them for valuable intel is a nice plan B....

Right, so therefore we should lock them up in Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib, deny them due process of law, and torture them until the fun runs out.

Makes sense to me.

As usual a certain feline is scraping in the wrong litterbox. Insurgents, al queda, etc are NOT "civilians" under the Geneva ACCORDS. (Please get the terminology right - the convention was the MEETING, the policies agreed to were the ACCORDS.) As a matter of law, as BountyHunter as a fellow O-4 can attest, a person taking up arms in conflict without being a member of a standing recognized military is SCREWED.

"Due process of law?"
This isn't a "police" operation, it's a military operation.
I still have my Geneva Conventions card from 1971.
I think that the American People need to have a lot more say in whether we get involved in things like that!
Most of the people who signed off on the G.C. are *dead* now!
If (we) have to abide by the G.C. and the other side simply won't then it needs to be suspended!
You don't fight with one hand tied behind your back.
It just doesn't make sense that we try to "impress" countries that hate us as to how "civilized" we are!
For what purpose?
Ok, I'm off to the gym, maybe I can think of some more '60's peace/protest songs while I'm on the treadmill.
I never liked that stinky patchoulie oil!

Archer -> RE: US soldier shoots at Quran for target practice (5/20/2008 10:32:21 AM)

Back to the OP a monumentally stupid thing to do on the part of the soldier.
A complete lack of basic judgement ability, worthy of the worst non court martial punishment.
Assignment to the farthest remote and isolated duty station available.
Something like guarding the portapotties on the flightline in the farthest north Alaska airfield.

But if not available then I think cleaning the porta potties for the rest of the tour might be in order for the man something within the boundries of the man's obvious judgement ability not to screw up.

I meant that the problem lies in what you assumed about this guy. If he really is like you think he is,

I assume this because of what I read.  He's a staff Seargent, which is an E-6.  He's a sniper, so I imagine he's in a combat arms unit.  If he joined when he was 18 or 19, it shouldn't have been hard for him to make E-6 in a short time span in combat.

quote:

should he be over there, wielding a gun?

I didn't say he was stupid.  I said he did something stupid.  You never did anything stupid before?  People do things like this when they are in stressful situations.  My father told me a story about Vietnam once.  They had these annoying monkies over there that would steal things and jump out of trees and attack people.  So it was not uncommon for soldiers to open up and completely destroy a tree these monkeys were in.  Shit like that happens in war.  As long as it's not criminal behavior, I really don't care.  It's not a big deal, and could have been handled quietly without all of this controversy.

They murdered poor innocent monkeys?   [sm=ugh.gif]
Hope there aren't any PETA members here or this argument, er, excuse me, discussion is going to go off in yet another direction.

Termyn8or -> RE: US soldier shoots at Quran for target practice (5/20/2008 1:58:55 PM)

It's not another direction, I think people are realizing just what we are, talking about field executions and shit. Joking about it, maybe even some flippancy. It's refreshing really.

Eventually maybe we will be like Gays coming out of the closet. We are the nastiest and baddest motherfuckers in the world and we are taking over. Anybody who doesn't like it - boom boom.

We will become a nation of soldiers, unable to do much else but to pack up a bag of french fries. Our Mothers and daughters will be raped by marauding modern pirates while we are prevented from doing a damn thing about it, and half of them at least will be getting a government check.

Meantime a bigger and bigger chunk of our budget will be spreading this wonderful society we have destroyed, err built, to the ends of the Earth.

When they reach their next goal, they can be sure that people are stupid enough to keep fucking so as to supply plenty of flesh for the fires all over the world. They will gloat and promote how much they have done for the world, while being despised by 90% of it's population. But with their ivory towers and the 'free speech zones' that isolate them and major media from dissenters, they will sleep just fine at night, thuinking they are God's gift to those they torture and kill. And all the while their credit card that has no limit will tax every productive person in this country out of everything he has.

And the beat goes on.

I said it before, Smedly Butler.

Let me get more specific, Major General Smedly P. Butler. Read him, and keep your powder dry.

Termy, actually - I am NOT "joking" about field executions... Unlawful combatants are not civilians protected under the laws of war, nor are they "prisoners of war" entitled to the proctections afforded to them. Its interesting that you mentioned "pirates" because that is essentially what they are. Many are upset by the detention of these terrorists but they do not represent the legitimate recognized forces of a nation-state and we legally dont have to allow them to live at all. Detention at Gitmo is an act of kindness on our part because its more than they are legally entitled to. When I went through SERE they stressed on us NOT to EVER abandon our flightsuits, dog tags, or other credentials or to don civilian clothing because we would lose all protections and would be subject to summary execution if captured.

As for the french fry comment... I find that pretty offensive as Im sure many other vets do. I have never bagged up french fries in my life - not even as a teenager. (As a teenager I never worked a fast food gig, my first job was actually construction - I started as a blaster's assistant drilling holes and then learned how to run an excavator, handle explosives, etc.) I came out of the military with $6,000,000 worth of job training and while not all are pilots a lot of people became cops, paramedics, welders, secretaries, carpenters, aircraft mechanics, pipefitters, etc. If you can name a civilian job, there is probably a military equivelant or school that prepares you for it. Soldiers dont bag fries.

French fries?  If I bag fries, its because I'm bored between horse training gigs.   I may not have been able to score pilot training (my eyesight disqualified me for helo pilot with the army) but I came out of my second branch of the service as one of the best trained electronics techs in the world.  I do what I do by choice.

Remember people, vets gave you the right to be ungrateful.

And no, I don't have any problems with existentialism.
