Suggestion:
First, find out what she is eating to begin with.  Start with a food log.  Everything that gets eaten or drunk is logged, including water, and how much.  Having done this as part of a nutrition study when I was Navy, you can be surprised at how much you do eat in a day.
Weekly, sit with the food log and do a calorie count. What is the average daily calorie intake.

This will give a baseline on what you need to reduce.  Finding out where you are before making changes is the idea.

Then, do reductions in diet based on what you find are excesses.

From what I remember, it is 1800 calories a day for active men and 1200 calories a day for active women as a rapid weight loss target.  This level, according to Navy nutritionist, should give a 5lb per week weight loss when coupled with 3 hours per week of aerobic exercise.  Aerobic exercise defined as heart rate brought above 120 for at least 30 minutes.

I can't find the formula offhand but there is one based on height and weight to give what is the calorie intake required to keep a certain weight.  Find that and you can come off the maintenance level and increase exercise level and you will lose.

On another tack.  Find a copy of "Diets Don't Work" by Swartz.  A good picture of how changing lifestyle choices will lead to weight loss more effectively than diets.  Bob and Katherine Swarts also wrote "The One Hour Orgasm" that is very informative.  Should be required reading for all newly wed men I think.

Hi,
I am studying nutrition at the moment as well as being on a diet myself.

I weight 117kg and am 5'7 when my nutriontist worked out how much I was suppose to be eating it came to 1500 a day and i was told on 1200 my body would lose weight but it wouldn't stay of in the long term.

Also I read that someone only allows themselves one drink of milk a week this is so bad for you, your body needs that calcium, it also needs carbs, proteins and even fats to work. A low carb diet is bad for you for multiple reasons and again will not work long term. I suggest anyone wanting to lose weight see a professional and get aq consultation on what they need to do for them. No two people are the same or have the same diet needs.

Some of you guys are awfully judgemental.  I'll leave it at that and not go into details, but I do appreciate a lot of the helpful advice.

I think Weight Watchers may be the way to go, but it will have to wait until we move into the city.  Right now healthy food is extremely cost prohibitive...that's an unfortunate side effect of living in the country.  Not to mention gas prices.

Also, keep in mind, I HAVE studied this, and her ideal calorie intake for her weight and height, as of Mayo Clinic's calculator, is just over 1200 calories.  We were keeping everything on a spreadsheet that I created.  Her, her daughter, and I all went on the same "diet" which was really just tracking everything and keeping the total calorie count (we could eat as much as we wanted as long as we were willing to do an amount of exercise that would burn it right back off in the same day).  I and the daughter were losing between 1-5 lbs a week with an occassional platau week.  slave was gaining.

I guess the main thing I need to concentrate on now is the types of food she eats.  If anyone has a link to a site that lists foods that are reported to boost one's metabolism I would appreciate it.

Insulin and blood sugar tests have been done and showed that everything looked fine.

And contrary to what seems to be popular belief, I feel that information and advice from people that are not experts can sometimes be better than that from experts.  When it comes to this type of thing, it's all about "what works for you", and what I mainly wanted to know was what had worked for other submissive females.  I do appreciate the helpful responses (as opposed to the judgemental ones) and look forward to any more insightful advice.

Will waiting till you move really be necessary?
the good thing about Weight Watchers is it can be done online...no traveling involved.
And also the program works on a point system...allowing you to eat foods on hand to total the allotted number of points.

Bio-oil is good for stretch marks.  Also Palmer's olive butter.  I've been using a mix of olive oil and baby oil lately.  It does make the skin look and feel good.
Now, for the weight loss.  Everyone is saying no soda, but I found that sometimes the body needs caffine.  I found this to be very helpful to fight the soda craving:

CRYSTAL LIGHT ENERGY ON THE GO.  It has caffine and b vitamins.  Add it to a bottle of water and you won't miss soda.

Oh, and cut out sugar.  Sugar free Jello and Pudding are very good alternatives.

Some very good advice. Last year, I was put one a "Count Everything that Goes Into YOUR Mouth" diet by the VA Medical Center, when I developed a rare esophogeal malady and HAD to lose 65 lbs from 265 to 200 lbs. so they could operate on/in my chest. I used a "log book" by the fridge... Blood pressure and blood sugar / insulin were monitored. They allowed me 1200-1500 Calories a Day Monday thru Friday ...and "IF" I met that goal, I got 1500-1800 Calories a Day Saturday and Sunday ( as a personal "reward" ). I had to re-adjust the carbohydrates only once, increase them, when I got "border line" Diabetic, two weeks later I was fine. The Ability to Monitor is Key ! "Ketostix" are available at any pharmacy, without a prescription, for monitoring. I Lost 65 lbs. in 6 1/2 months, 10 lbs. a Month, but it was under a Doctor's Supervision. Five ( 5 ) lbs. a month is probably best / better for a personal programme, plus exercise, as allowed by your situation. I had no choice ! Lose it or else ! I am NOT a Gym Bunny and have a bad back, so walking and swimming were the best for me. Good Luck if you are trying to lose weight, fat WILL kill you ! The example they used for me was, "Why are you carrying around a 65 lb. "back pack" everyday when you do not have to ?" Note: Do not be disappointed and lose faith if you "Plateau", i.e. lose some weight and then hold at a level for a period of time, it is natural and the body adjusting to your new diet, it will start to lose again, just do not stop your regimen !

My personal experience has taught me that weight loss is sooo simple, despite what all the books and expensive programs would like you to believe.

Eat Clean
Exercise

Eating clean for me is lean protein, veggies, and whole grains. Exercise with some intensity. Set goals and work towards them. Anyone can exercise, just start at whatever level you can and keep challenging yourself.

I've always used "body for life" as a general guide in my wieght loss efforts. I gained close to 100lbs with all three of my pregnancies and I lost all of it and more.

Good luck!

Personal Recommendation : The Metabolic Typing Diet.  Very informative, makes a lot of sense, and from personal experience it Works if you're 100% HONEST about answering the questions to determine what your metabolic type is.  It's pretty much the "formal" version of what CalifChick was talking about - finding the Right foods in the Right Combinations for Your Specific Body Chemistry.  Cause this whole thing of diet/exercise being a "One Size Fits All" is utter and complete Nonsense.   Your body chemistry differs from her's differs from mine differs from joe blow down the street.  Therefore our absorption rates, use rates, storage rates - even things as seemingly minor as our cravings - are going to be significantly different.

Please don't fall into the prepackaged food programs... they work for the short term... however, she needs to learn how to eat properly.  Portioning out your food sources is important and one of the keys in weight reduction and then, management.  Weight watchers is awesome as it teaches how to eat in the real world.. doing your own food prep and portion control. Jenny Craig et al are very expensive programs, and are not realistic for the long haul. Exercise is very important. She doesn't have to do an hour of cardio.  Research has shown that interval training is the most effective calorie burner going.. so alternating some strength training with short bursts of cardio is the most effective way to burn calories.  Metabolism takes several months to really increase... building muscle will expediate things and tone her up.

In short: portion control, a good multivitamin, calcium with D, water, interval training and patience.... the weight did not appear over night, and it will not come off over night either.

Best wishes...

This thread makes me sad.
Diets do not work. period.
Modify not deny!

If you are not feeding your body, it will go into starvation mode and will hold onto fat.
If you are not feeding your mind and health first and foremost, your body will not process the foods you take in properly.
So>>Count all the calories you want but if you have an abnormal metabolical or psycological relationship with food, it is not the food you are eating or not eating that will create a sustained weight loss.  Not until you address the imbalance in the metabolizm and/or mind.

Eating healthy does work. When you do eat, eat things that are as close to "coming from the earth or in their natural form" as possible. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfyed ( not necessarily full ). Moving your body daily  in whatever safe way you can helps so much and is really the key.
(a physical hobby or activity...biking, swimming, join a nature hiking group, even photography group get exercise while doing what they love as a hobby,  what do you like to do for fun? and then incorporate that into an activity that will move you .)

Learn to tell the difference between when you are hungry for nourishment and when you are hungry for something else...
ie  attention, companionship, emotional release/relief.
Feed yourself in a way other than by eating food.

stop focusing on food and how much or how little you are eating and get busy focusing on living fully & happily and doing what feeds your spirit instead.

Embrace yourself....and have a support system at hand with  people who embrace you for who you are not what you look like or how much you weigh or dont weigh.

to the OP   if you really want to help her, don't control her weight.  Encourgage her to BE healthy as SHE defines that.  If she has lost perspective on how she herself defines
being healthy and making healthy choices,
encourage her to seek those answers out.  Empower her by embracing her exactly as she is and reinforcing that you want her to be the best she can be within herself. If SHE wants to make some changes then you will support her in those efforts.

Agree to walk with her...keep her busy in other ways than eating. Help her focus on things other than food and weight.
I'm sure you can think of something for her to do

when I say "embrace her as she is"  I don't mean that you enable her to remain unhealthy ( or ignore her health concerns) no.
But getting caught up in the struggle of  acceptance and body-image...and rewarding food accomplishments and then punishing the failures only re-inforces in her mind that "her weight" is what defines failure or success and her body image gets further distorted.
Do incorporate challenges...as in keep active and moving yourself ...she will want to be beside you pleasing you  : )

You say you are at a detriment living in the country...I see that as a possible asset !... she could plant a garden and with veggies...fruits...incorporate those in a healthy lifestyle and the gardening will be exercise and fun !  : )  well  it is for some ( me too ) ..

Be happy : )
Cyndi

( sorry if this came off as a  rant,I even recomposed and toned it down a bit, but there is an epidemic in this country, imo, mostly because of diets and they about killed me, literally...and so this is something I feel very passionate about.)

I have recently started weight watchers.  It is by far the best $17 dollars a month I am spending!  You name it and I have tried it, the atkins diet, the pills, the fast fixes, the unhealthy fixes that put me into a weight lose yo yo rollercoaster and have caused me some serious health issues.  Finially I feel like I am in charge of losing my weight!  I do not buy anything prepackaged, and I can cook for my kids and I can eat it too.  I also dont do any meetings, because I am a serious introvert LOL.  But, 3 times a day I log into the site and right there in front of me is all the information I need to eat healthy.  I am allowed 32 points a day, and every person is different based on size and activity level and so on.  It has taught me to eat smart, and I have also found it very hard to eat all the food I should in a day but I force myself (who ever thought eating more and healthy would make me lose weight).  It suggests 4-6 meals a day that are very small to rev up the metobolic processes.  I walk for only 10-15 mins a day at this point with my dog as my company (he thinks I am nuts).  I lose 2-3 lbs a week, its going to be a long and slow process but I am confident that I will keep it off!

To the OP:  Trust me, if you force her onto a bad diet with the wrong foods she can definatly end up with health issues.  I have battled severe anemia, heart conditions (not from being over weight but from rapid weight flux), and even severe pains in my bones and joints from the ups and downs.  It was not a fun road.  Let her find the proper way, the best way for HER, and be her rock and support her.  Good luck to you both.

All I can say is what works for me.   I don't set out to exersize.... but i make an effort to be active. I go on photo hunts (where I drag my camara  with me and exlpore somewhere on foot. sometimes it's my back yard, or a local park. Other times, I drive my self to the beach and do it there.)  I also cook, and clean. It's amaizing how many calories are burned when scrubbing the set-in stains in the tub, or how much work it is to move all the funiture to vacume (or sweep) underneth it.
on the soda note,  they have a lot of sugar and don't provide anything in the way of nutration.   I find that the best way to limit them is not being allowed them unless I have permission to.  This way, I don't just go get a soda every time mine runs out.
