Status: offline 		My sister bought a new pc and it has Vista on it. Anybody use it and have any helpful tips or links I could give her? ...Other than throwing it out....she did think about getting a MAC but has used Windows for many years.

Status: offline 		Find the literal model of your PC and look for drivers, ie, if it was an HP 5000 laptop, I'd check the bottom to find it's something like dv5206us, then I'd hit google and type dv5206us drivers

look for a site that belongs to hp.com (or some variant) and check the driver listings; if XP is listed, you have drivers for XP, and you are allowed downgrade rights to install XP on the machine.

Vista sucks ass. It is resource intensive, bass-ackwards, has shitty support, and random failures for no apparent reason. For my money, XP is a better OS... though I've never paid for it, and honestly run linux. I have a Mac as well, and Leopard is an awesome OS, but the cost of macs & replacement hardware is horrendous.

Case in point: see if you can downgrade to XP. If you're unhappy with Vista, sell the machine (craigslist?) and buy a machine with XP -- they're available online, used, and from OEM retailers.

All new os's have issues, even Linux (I run ubuntu and redhat enterprise at work) the only real differences are that Mac is completely proprietary, Linux can be fixed, but can more easily be screwed hard, xp is older and Vista is compleatly new
sure, downgrade, and then cry that you cant play half your games anymore without 3 different emulators, seriously, once you learn to use Vista, it practiaclly runs istelf, (and repairs itself)

Status: offline 		I haven't had any problem at all running Vista. The only issue I've had on my new PC is with the generic email program it comes with occasionally freezing when I open it. Other than that, all works fine.

Status: offline 		My pc came with a feeble home copy of vista that blows ass.  I have worked hard to get it to cooperate by getting the upgraded drivers and such when they come out.  I can't totally blame Vista for the probs.  I let the salesperson talk me into buying an acer and I am less than pleased with it.  I specifically asked if it had a word processing program so I could work on scripts for my ren faire shows and storied for fun.  I was told that it had one installed.  Ummm..... it had notebook.  That does not qualify as a real word processing program to anyone that I know.

btw, I am still having issues with the darned thing locking up while I am playing WOW.  There seems to be no warning and it just locks up for a bit and then finally catches up.  It did it on other games as well.  Any ideas?

Status: offline 		right click and go to properties, from there click compatability and chose to run it in compatbility mode for xp

and never, never again buy an acer/gateway/emachine
(they are all the same company)

or a hp

Dells are ok, but no computer comes with a good word processor, go download open office

they have good uality pcs out there, none of them are Acer, or any other brand commonly sod in large quantities at Wal-Mart

Status: offline 		Having shelled out money for the wife's laptop (four years old and still kickin ass) and a lot less for her new table top, I still think it will be worth the money.
Had I ever seen an acer at Wally world, I would have shied away from them.  Unfortunately, I didn't get the warning.  Strangely, I've had 2 emachines and they were both good computers.  They weren't GREAT computers, just good.

Status: offline 		I honestly do feel your pain.  The 2 I had served to play simple games and as word processors.  Had I tried anything worse, I am sure that I would have hated them.  My laptop was actually the better of the two frighteningly enough.

I am never never never never never going near Acer again. It didn't do what it said on the box. Thanks for the info on the manufacturer, Ash..

The Mac is fine. When I bought it, it was no more expensive than the equivalent PC; I haven't compared prices since, but I suspect I bought at the right time. With virtualisation, I run all the Windows stuff I need to run anyway.

My next laptop might well be Apple. It won't be Acer et al, it won't be Sony (because of the reports of tons of crap coming on Sony laptops). And there's the rub. If I buy Apple, from my experience, I'll buy a decent bit of kit. If I buy a Windows system, I don't know whether I'll be getting good or crap kit. That pushes me towards Apple, despite the probable extra cost.

let some one make you a dual boot system. MAC runs on certain AMD or Intel systems which or not MAC branded
Or use virtual machine.(that emulates different pc's on your own pc)

On a MAC you can have dual boot too. Meaning you Have Leopard and Vista next to eachother. Best of both worlds.

Vista is not so different from XP...most things changed in the back ground. You can put your old XP skin back.
A fast computer makes it more enjoyable though. (64 bit is faster then the 32 bit with the right processor of course)


Oh and don't get fooled in buying more then 3 gig of memory for 32bit systems. They can't use it.
3 gig and up memory is for 64 bit systems.


btw I think most big brands allow downgrading Vista to XP
btw 2   don't get fooled in bying a Vista ready pc. It means only it runs the boring version, with out all the eye candy. Demand to play with the pc and feel how fast it is, with all eye candy turned on.

Status: offline 		I am on a new Vaio (Sony) running Vista and I don't find its performance appreciably better than my old Dell that had XP, despite the fact that this is much faster dual processor system.  I have never had issues with the quality of an IBM (now Linovo), Dell, HP/Compaq or Sony - they are all basically made with good QC processes.  (Acer used to be unbeatable in quality once upon a time.)  The problems I have are clearly with Vista itself.  I have worked in XP, NT, ME, 98, 3.5 and  NEVER had so many OS related poblems.  My plan now is to reformat and install XP (and not touch Vista again) when I have the time to do it.  There is only one cool thing I like about Vista - the gadget pane - and so many features I do not like, that it just isn't worth it.  Its a HUGE system hog, and it security features mean nothing to someone who has been using Firefox with AdBlock and Trend Micro's robust Internet security suite for several years.  It's hip to hate Microsoft, but I have always preferred MSOffice products, and have generally been happy with Windows sans IE - but they shit the bed on this one.  (Where's that old Microsoft BOB CD I have around here somewhere?)

Status: offline 		Just curious, if you can't use more than 3 gigs on a 32 bit system, & the memory is sold in 1 Gig pairs, the computer has only 2 slots, is there a way to maximize the amount of memory you purchase for it?  Is it worth it to buy 2, 2 Gig memory sticks for a total of 4 gigs so you can get the 3 gigs?  Every bit of information I have read on my system says to stick with matching memory pairs.
