Status: offline 		OK..interesting post and since I was just threatening to burn down microsoft maybe I should ask my question here lol.  I have a pc that is about 1 year old and came with Vista on it.  I dislike it greatly.  There is an Intel core 2 processor on here and this was suspossed to be a graphic/gaming system.  I do not game much but I do work from home online, and do a lot of pictures/videos/website type stuff.  My issues are A.  Nothing is compatable with Vista, all of my good (and also not old) printers will print but none of the functions are avaliable on them and B.  it locks up everytime I am on it, and normally several times.  I also use IE and I have never had the problem but since I have had this when I try to open more than a half dozen windows or tabs it takes away my ability to open more (when I click to open it, it just freezes for a few seconds then unfreezes and didnt open).  I have been on the phone at least once a month to get some issue resolved with it.  I am not a pc wiz, so maybe the crappy service is just to get me to pay to fix it LOL.  But, would things work better if I upgraded the Vista to Ultimate?  Could it just be that the basic version that came pre installed is crap?  If I upgrade should I strip this system down and totally reformat it with the new system?  I have no games on this pc, and the only things that run at start up are Vista stuff and my Anti-Virus (I think).  I am going to be shopping for a lap top, but have been putting it off because of these issues.  I do not know which way to go, a laptop with XP or a mac (which I have never used)....Life will be so much easier when we have robots to run the computers  LOL.

Status: offline 		laptop with eithjer XP or a MAC will do.
But Vista shouldn't give you all those problems. Most programs have Vista compatability by now.
Did you try a fresh installment?

Status: offline 		I still haven't seen all these 'problems' with Vista... just like XP, ME, and so forth before it, it doesn't seem to like to have Yahoo Messenger open along with Explorer... and that is about all I've found wrong since getting a new Vista machine 9 months ago.

Status: offline 		I just learnt that if you want old help files to work you have to download something. I hope no one needs help for those old programmes with the hlp extension. If so you can fix it but why in the advancement of technology we don't make things backwardly compatible? Apparently the old hlp file programme doesn't meet Microsoft certification standards; imagine my shock at discovering Microsoft has standards?

Also in unrelated news: why does Pegasus mail keep sending me welcome to Pegasus mail I have like twenty of them and every time I delete one of the fuckers a new one pops up it's like trying to fight an endless tide of hello I hope you enjoy Pegasus mail spam.

think it is 9.0.0.922

    It's not really fair to compare low end PC laptops to apples; this is like saying all four-door cars are shit compared to Lotuses because you owned a Kia.

    Apple has the advantage / disadvantage of not allowing others to make apples.  This means they have greater control over content, so they rarely release things that are total crap, but also means they do not enjoy an economy of scale.  You pay more (a lot more) for an Apple versus a PC of comparable hardware specifications, and you can get PCs that blow Apples out of the water.

    Running Vista on a low end budget laptop is a no-go.  Just get a copy of XP and move on with your life.  If you want to run Vista, get a nice laptop with a shitload of RAM.  I tend to prefer ASUS myself because I think they are a good value for the money and some of their recent machines (I have a G1, for instance) have been quite nice.  Two of the guys on my team at work have a relatively new Alienware and a brand new Voodoo; you pay out the nose, but they are nice machines as well.  Some would say you pay for style as well as substance with them; your mileage may vary.  Dell's XPS machines are also pretty powerful.

    None have a problem with Vista.  My biggest piece of advice is roll with 4 GB of RAM and a decently powerful processor, or if you can't, roll with XP instead of Vista.

    See my comment about paying for style over substance.  I won't argue it either way, I know people on both sides of the spectrum.

    Edit - This applies to now; things were possibly different a few years back with AW was an independent manufacturer.

    But I own an ASUS, so that should tell you what I decided in the end.

    Edit:

    I also couldn't care less who owns who.  What bothers me about Alienware is that, lately, they seem to be less of a value proposition.  I got a more powerful ASUS for less money, and they are very reliable machines.

    Why buy an Alienware, then?

    At least with a Voodoo or a Falcon or a Widow you are getting a huge degree of visual appeal / customization, which matters to some people.  Not so much to me, as I prefer to fly under the radar, but I can understand what they are paying for.  I feel Alienware is kind of stuck in no-man's land.

    IIRC, I stopped using Trillian because it didn't save the offline messages or something.  Anyway, the YM problem might happen once a week at most, could just be Yahoo acting up.

    Other than that, Vista has been click and go from day one.

    No. In fact I stopped some things that were making the process even longer. Vista hasn't given Me any problems, everything ran fine right out of the box, it just seems to take a long time to get started.
    Added for the record: My computer knowledge couldn't fill a thimble.

    This sounds like either (i) not enough memory, or (ii) the CPU is getting swamped.  Given that you have a dual-core system, memory is the more likely bottleneck. 

    I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit.  I can tell you right now that that system uses anywhere from 1.3 to 1.5 GB of physical memory just idling, immediately after a reboot.  That is a huge amount of overhead.

    Try running Task Manager and click on the "Performance" tab.  Keep an eye on it as you load up your system.  Particulary, keep an eye on the amount of physical memory in use.  If this ever exceeds your total amount of physical memory, your system will start swapping tasks to "virutal memory" in the paging file on disk, and your performance will crater.

    Multiple windows running a web browser can do this.  All  browsers are memory hogs.  In addition, Firefox has these cute little memory leaks, which cause it to consume more memory the longer it's run.  I use my browser intensively, so I am accustomed to seeing my "firefox.exe" process using as much as a gigabyte of physical memory or even more.

    Status: offline     		For the first and last time, that is NOT a huge amount of overhead.

    That memory use will go away if anything else needs to get allocated, most of it won't even go to disc, but will just unallocate.

    Vista learns which apps you fire up over time, and begins pre-caching the dlls you'll need to run those applications.  What's the point of having 2GB of ram, and having 1 of it sit free, when you could be pre-loading things (at low priority) into most of the spare space, in the hopes that something already there will need called.

    The only people you see complaining about Vista's high memory usage are Power Users who are slamming tons of random processes through it, and haven't turned off the pre-caching and the folks who are ignorant to how memory allocation works. :)
