As many of You know i recently moved to a new community.....Despite all my previous protestations, i ended up in a small town.  The other day at work someone asked me what i do for fun........And for the life of me i can't remember. i can remember what i did back home for fun, but can't seem to figure that out here. Today, was an especially tough day at work, and when i walked out the door it hit me that in the past i would've gone out and hung out with my neice and nephews. Any suggestions, experience, opinions welcome.
Thanks,
Kali

Ping-pong is quite a lot of fun. If you have a table. And lots of space to play it. And rackets. The rackets are cool: they can be used for frying eggs, and as miniature rowing paddles for people with small arms as well.

i'm assuming you mean when not in a group...
i go to used book stores and thrift stores and get lost in the bookshelves...
i go buy some flowers and make a display for the living or dining room....for about $10 you can get a lovely variety.
i bring donated books and magazines to nursing homes or hospice (bring sweets)
learn a new thing...maybe a language or knitting... i started painting old furniture for fun
-----------i'm sure you'll be right at home in your small town in no time

Purely for fun...the zoo here is way above average, and a day there is real treat for me.  Cooking for friends is recreation for me as well.
Dressing funny and hanging out with the Scadians is fun because I refuse to take it seriously...one big old progressive costume party.

Love to walk, hike, etc.  And container gardening hot peppers is something I thoroughly enjoy.

I read. a lot. i play mindless computer games. i love to walk in the woods, go sit in the park, go on picnics, go shopping or to the mall, or surf the net. i like crafts and sewing. i recently moved to a small town, and i discovered they still have a ceramics shop! how great is that! you can go chill out once a week and paint, and get all your christmas gifts done! and people will really appreciate them cause they are made by you! and you will really want to give them away, too - cause just cause you like to paint for an hour once a week does not mean you want all that crap sitting around your house!
i like to go out to eat, by myself, with a good book, and just sit and sip my coke and read. preferably somewhere where there are kids i can people watch. i like people watching, esp kids.
i grow plants - garden, potted, in the house. i paint. i write. i read poetry.
find a way to get to know some people, hon. small towns are great, but you need to get out. take a class. go to church. join a running club. something.
look for a gym you like to go blow off steam. find the local library to keep you in books. buy things for your bathroom to give you a spa night to help you detress.
journal while you try to figure out what it is that you love, what makes you smile, what unknots the muscles.
and, be blessed.

I try to go fishing whenever I get the chance.  I can spend the whole day on the shore or in a boat drinking beer and catching fish.  I like to go out and target shoot.  I used to hunt a great deal, but I don't do as much anymore.  I love to shoot pool, and I do that at least once a week at my favorite little dive.  I love movies, and I have this weird obsession with B-movies.  So I spend a lot of times looking for odd movies that I haven't seen or can't find.  I do read a lot, and I usually get books from used book shops or the library.  I can spend the whole day going around to different used book stores.  I like horse racing, and we have a racetrack here.  The racing is only seasonal, but you can bet on horses from tracks all over the country.  I play the guitar, and I have a lot of friends that play instruments.  So I will go hang out with them and just play and talk.

There's lot of things you can do, even in small towns.  I live in a small town too, but there are always things going on if you just look.  Go take a class at your local community college.  They have all sorts of crafts classes, or classes on a variety of subjects for non-full time students.

If time affords (and your criminal record!) You could be a Big Brother/Big Sister; You could volunteer at a number of places, retirement homes(my 3y/o and 11 y/o did that bi-weekly), animal shelters(walk a dog, brush a cat), Guardian Ad Litem (this requires a background check as well, intense but rewarding as well), Women's Shelter(always in need of folks to help), Food Pantry (used to take my 3y/o son there and we would bag potatoes!), be a tutor at a local school, or library (for the illiterate), deliver Meals on Wheels (my son and i did that as well), read at a local school once a week, volunteer at a certain area of the local hospital (i did 80hrs for my Ph Thy internship), is endless really! Go to Your local chamber of commerce (found in the phone book) and tell them of Your plight, i am sure they could direct You in a direction that interests You.
Good luck!

I have my doubts about the last two words, there. as far as i can tell, watching male family memebers when i was growing up, you catch fish, you don't catch fish - kind of an act of God there - but the men never seem to care much, one way or another, about that part. i think they liked the drinking beer part, mostly.

I'm into writing very much, but I can't say it's recreation. More that I'm driven to it. Volunteering is a great way to get out and meet people, make some new friends and such. Myself, I work with a bunch of animals. It's great, they're always glad to see me! I have my own little places that I like to hang out where everyone knows me.

I guess it just depends on where your interests lie. Getting out of your box now and then is good too, try new stuff. Live your life!!

Sleep.  Unconsciousness is the best possible use of time.  I also knit,  weave, read, do beadwork, and hang out with my pets and my family.  Then I nap.

I cannot imagine the untrammelled hell of life in a small town.  Even as the homebody of the universe, I have to know that there is something out there.....  So, there HAS to be some kind of community thing.  Volunteer at the library, maybe, and read to kids?  Or old folks.  They always have stuff to share, and as a future solitary old lady, I try to pay forward some karma by being nice to old people.  Bowling.  I used to love bowling, and those league things are a good excuse to have beer and french fries.  As a knitter, of course there is the knitting group thing~~and knitters love to suck others into the fiber vortex!

Good luck, and have fun!

I play guitar when I am not banging around on the computer. Music is fun. I feel sad for all the people of the world who don't play a musical instrument.

It's amazing in some ways, how many of us play in that particular crowd and are also involved in BDSM in some form or fashion....

And I'm never sure which part is better - playing dress up other than on halloween, or the excuse to party WAY to much all weekend and wear myself out at the drum circle while belly dancing.

Let's see - what do I do for grins -n- giggles Other than the SCA and BDSM?  I fish frequently, I spend entire weekends out at the lake camping and playing on my boat, I spend the hours while I'm at the lake and Not fishing with canvas, brushes, and paint doing some serious Plein Aire Painting. I paint when I'm home as well, though in the studio rather that outside, and usually in the company of a good bottle of vino.  I read. I mall crawl strictly to windowshop and people watch.  I use my kitchen as a laboratory and experiment with new recipes of my own devising.  I go spend time just enjoying nature at the park or I go out to the Zoo for a few hours.  I rent a small plane for a few hours of solo flight time.  I spend time playing with my 3 dogs and 1 cat, and watching my 150gal aquarium in fascination.  And when one or two particular friends of mine have free time at the same time that *I have free time, we go do some heavy drinking and just for fun pool playing.
