sure.  and a woman who is dominant can still be submissive.

some folks enjoyment of submission is based on that it ISN'T in their nature/personality to submit to another...it is something they enjoy because of the struggle/challenge, or because it is such a rare thing for them to experience.

some view it as having a basis that isn't internal, but in inspiration from another specific person, a gift that they give to their partner, or even something that is exclusive only behind the bedroom door.

there is neither a "One-True-Way" nor a "One-Size-Fits-All" description for the motivations behind submission.

dominance is a different story.  mainly because it isn't painted in a negative light by our modern society like submission is.

one can be dominant throughout every aspect of their lives and the common reaction is praise and applause---be submissive in every aspect of your life and the most common reaction is that you are a "doormat" or need therapy.

well for me, I enjoy making others happy. The simple things make my spine tingle with happiness. Simple things like making dinner for someone or making their favorite desert to see them smile. Doing things out of my way for someone else just to feel good. I also find pleasure in having another person in control. Granted somethings I do not let my Dominant handle (my financial expenses for one) But many other things I find no joy in it unless I have someone molding me and guiding me in a certain direction. Hard to describe, but I do the things that I do because that is what makes me happy. Many people see submission in different ways, some people like to be submissive in sex and others like service oriented submissive. It just depends on the person and usually what makes them feel happy or at peace with thsemvles. I think I knew I was submissive the first time someone looked down at me with "that look" and I melted.. lol

Why do you need a name now?

i didn't say that i need a name.  i said that i realized "there was a name for the way i respond.....", as in a name for my behavior style in intimate relationships.  That's not the same as a name for me.  It's a name for the way i behave in an intimate relationship.

Maybe you misread what i wrote so, here it is again.

When i did learn the word, i realized that there was a name for the way i respond to a man i am intimately involved with.

Take time to name yourself.

Why name myself, when i am very happy with the name that my parents gave me, Linda Joy, and then, the name that my Master chose for me, joy.  They both have worked fine for me and i have no need or desire to choose something different.  But, thanks for asking.

Just in from the home office in Scottsdale, Arizona…

Top 10 signs you might be submissive.

10. Your tired of answering to “bitch”, “little girl”, or “slave.” Pick one dammit!
  9.    It looks like you’re in Slytherin, but at last moment Sorting Hat pops in a butt plug and sends you to Sissies  House.
  8. Checkmark on driver’s license next to “Bottom.” Top and Switch left blank.
 7. You’re meeting with kinky friends and you notice everyone else is sitting in a chair, not on the floor.
 6.  Later at same gathering you notice everyone else has taken a turn sitting on you.
 5.  “This *is* your turn” is a much less satisfying answer than you imagined it might be.
 4.  Looking in the mirror, you’re thinking TULS NIAP must be the Norwegian Guy that designed that cute collar round your neck.
 3.  Your new CM mailbox is full of heartfelt words of welcome from nice dominant folk just wanting to make you feel at home. Also, get on your knees now b****!
 2.  You have no idea what you’re going to do with all those clothespins…

And the number one sign you might be submissive…

Master’s gave you permission to post your question on the CM message board!

Clearly I am new to this, I have been told I am submissive, but I don't feel that way. I sometimes feel mean and bossy in bed, and I love dirty talk. Can some of you who are experienced in this area give me some insight into what makes a sub and what makes a dom? Can a woman who is independent still be a submissive?

one who develops submissive tendencies around certain people or encounters.

one who finds enjoyment from it and actively chooses to follow suit.

I agree with the above...
I do not think, like some suggest, that you have to be submissive in all relationships or in all of your life. Just because you only submit to certain people in certain situations does not make you any less of a submissive.
I was woken very early this morning, after the first overnight stay with my Sir, with a request that I do something which I won't detail in here ;-).... and I complied/obeyed willlingly without a second thought.
In 20 years of vanilla relationships, if any man dared wake me and ask/order me to do the same thing.... he was told where to go, how to get there, and he would probably have got a boot in the arse for waking me up, let alone making that suggestion.
I choose to be submissive to this one man only... mentally and physically. Even when we step outside of the Dom/sub role, especially when out in a public place e.g having coffee or dinner, I'm still aware of my submission to him. It is still a core part of my relationship with him....
