By 2010 rides like this will be leaving those dino-piss drinking pieces of trash in the reeds. And you won't even hear them coming, or going. Better learn how to ID them from their tail lights, kids...

Z.

I had a 1970 Camaro many years ago, and enjoyed it. But in the not-too-distant future, I suspect gasoline is going to be many times more of a problem than it already is.

I'll take the Tesla over the new Camaro! Hell... it even looks as good... if not better.

Actually, they've said that one has a "turbine" sound not unlike a jet, though not as ear-splittingly loud.

Ummm... To quote the reviewer in this video  "It is by far the quietest car you will ever drive in."

Electric cars do make a turbine-like sound but hardly ear-splitting. That is just the quiet whirr of an electric motor providing 100% instantaneous torque.

Thanks for restating exactly what I said. In my origina quote, you can see the word "NOT" plainly before "as ear-splittingly loud."

However you dress it up, they fucked it up. I'll take the "Duke" mobile any day over the new one.

Zensee -> RE: 2010 Camaro (5/24/2008 2:10:37 AM)

Well sorry Smith but I don't think you were that clear.

You said it was not AS loud - which could mean anything up to almost as loud as a jet turbine. And since I intimated it was quieter than an internal combustion engine, and you seemed to be correcting my description by citing what they "actually" said about it, it was not uinreasonable for me to take that as a contradiction of my claim it was a very quiet machine.

"Actually," what you said was "you won't hear them coming." When in fact, you do hear them. It may not be loud, but you can hear them.

Also, I think the reviewer in your video was exaggerating. I recall (and have no link of course) a story where some cheritable organization for the blind was suing, or investigating the "hybrid cars" problems of causing blind people to be run over because they can't 'hear them' coming on a busy street and since they can't see them, they step off the curb right into them.

Now that lil tale would be irrelevant if not for my next point (with link):
http://www.vidly.net/video-tesla-roadster-test-drive.html

In THAT video it shows a guy driving away in a Tesla Roadster. There's background music playing over the obviously handycam-esque footage and you STILL hear the turbine sound as the car drives away. That's a sound I'd wager would be nearly impossible for a sighted person to miss, let alone a blind person, therefore, the Roadster isn't nearly as quiet as you think. Quieter than a similarly powered supercar with a combustion engine? Perhaps. But the "quietest thing on the road, that you won't hear coming?" Hardly.

Not bad, but if we're going with the original classics, I have to say my top three are probably The '69 Charger, the '71 Hemi Cuda, and the '69 GTO "Judge."

Well.....top 3 unless I'm forgetting one. Which I don't think I am.

Zensee -> RE: 2010 Camaro (5/24/2008 3:17:38 AM)

If you are in a muscle car, at speed, I seriously doubt you'd hear a tesla roadster sneaking up on you or passing you, unless it's stereo was blaring. When I wrote my comment I never imagined the participants in this thread to be speaking as bystanders but rather other drivers. And their visual acuity never came into consideration really.

Then perhaps you should specify YOUR position before expecting me to do the same.

   It'll also blow the spotlights off the Ford Crown Victoria P71 Police Interceptors I've been driving for the last 15 years. It's the first legitimate cop car competition for the Crown Vic since GM let the rear-drive Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 croak in 1996...
Charger R/T to Cop Charger
Most of what goes into a Charger Police Package is the same stuff that goes into the Charger R/T. This includes the same Mercedes-derived all-independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, five-speed automatic transmission and rack-and-pinion steering. Don't forget the 340-hp Hemi V8 with that fuel-efficient Multi-Displacement System (MDS) technology they got. The enforcement machine even comes with the same size tires as the Charger R/T, 225/60R18 all-season Continentals.

From there, however, the differences start piling up. For instance, the Charger R/T's all-season tires are H-speed rated (130 mph), but the Cop Charger has Continental ContiProContact radials with a V-speed rating (149 mph).

The Michigan State Police has tested the Charger and found that it has a "best in class" top speed of over 145 mph, as well as top finishes in the agency's acceleration, vehicle dynamics and braking tests. While being better than an old-school body-on-frame Crown Vic may not be saying much, the Charger we sampled ($30,505) works remarkably well. The only minor disappointment involved the Mercedes-sourced Electronic Stability Program, which couldn't be totally shut off and made dramatic powerslides tough to do. Nevertheless, for your benefit, we managed to pull off a few "Smoky" burnouts.

I'll take the word of people who actually drive EVOC until I see some facts to the contrary.

LadyRainfire -> RE: 2010 Camaro (5/24/2008 8:03:47 AM)

Zensee, I'll grant that the Tesla Roadster looks nice and impressive but I'm a bit reserved on it because I went through the website and didn't see the specifics on how it charged its power supply. I'd hate to be out for drive or a trip and run out of power. It's not exactly something you could drive up to the local gas station and stay "hey, dude - power me!" How long does it take to charge, does it plug into a power source, that sort of thing. I drive some pretty long distances out here, how would that factor in? It's 250 miles to the next next real town from my town heading out to Nevada. If you only get 220 miles to the charge, is that on flat miles? Beacuse there are several mountain ranges and a ton of twisted miles of desert out there between the 2 points. People die out there stranded every year.....   (yes, folks, I say I live in the Boonies for a reason!)

The Tesla looks good and has a good premise. I don't see it as a "muscle" car though. Would I like one? Only when they can prove certain things to my satisfaction. In the meantime, it's a nice dream that looks pretty. And it does look very very VERY nice!

Zensee -> RE: 2010 Camaro (5/24/2008 11:55:26 AM)

Hey LadyRainfire, here's a link to some info on the power system - it can be charged from a regular outlet with the on-board adapter. While the 220 mile range is better than most other electrics to date it still won't do the all night run through the trackless wilderness, although, if you were stranded in the scorching sun with an empty tank, the upcoming solar panel option would probably save your ass.

As the technology for electrics becomes more common and affordable, range will be improved. Perhaps an interurban hybrid version with a power on demand gas turbine for backup. Too bad we don't have Nicola Tesla's wireless power transmission system today - the issue of range would be moot.

And as expensive as these early models are, you would have to spend a lot more to purchase and maintain an internal combustion car capable of similar acceleration - 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds.

As I said. I don't care what it's got under the hood, over the hood, in the cup holder....I don't care. The Charger......the MUSCLE CAR should not have four doors. The thing could have a rocket engine in the trunk and I still wouldn't want it. I'll take the classic '69 model any day.

Probably not. I indicated my "top 3 classics." I ain't lookin' to cart 4 people around. I'm just lookin' to go fast. In my opinion, the only retro 'new' cars that got it right were the Mustang, the GTO, the Challenger, and the Camero. The only problem with the new GTO is that it looks a bit too much like the G6. At least it's only a 2-door though.

Then your point is moot. I said I didn't like the 4 door aspect of the new charger and you brought up the rambler as though it had 4 doors and was somehow cool.

If it doesn't have 4 doors, how in the hell is that even relevant to what I was saying I didn't like about the new charger?

we hada rambler when i was a kid......i can come up with lots of words for it-cool aint one of them.......ima thunkin perhaps alumbrado was bein a bit of a smart a perhaps? lil humor?

id prefer a valiant interceptor with the cool push button gears on the dash my self[;)]

as for these cars you can hear when theyre coming up-i hope they are being reported and bitched about as much as the loud motorcycles were in an earlier thread....

Alumbrado -> RE: 2010 Camaro (5/24/2008 12:36:56 PM)

You said you didn't like the fact that it was changed to a family car...I pointed out quite correctly that there are other reasons to go 4 door than family needs.. you mentioned a list of top Muscle cars, and I pointed out the one that everyone always forgets because they are too bamboozled by the Big 3 hype.

Actually, I also indicated I didn't care if it had other uses. I don't believe a "muscle car" should be a fucking sedan. It's not what a muscle car was meant to be.

Also, I saw the video you posted....and I can say there's a reason the rambler was left out. It's ugly as shit. It wouldn't get anywhere near my top 10 let alone my top 3.
