I can understand seatbelt and helmet laws for those under 18, but I think, as an adult I shouldn't have someone telling me what I have to do.

I remember recently reading a study that refuted the seatbelts ave lives mantra. I've also survived a wreck where mine saved my life and one where not wearing one saved my life. I can deal with seatbelt laws even though I don't like them. Helmet laws are even a more touchy subject as there are groups who will be more than happy to show anyone who asks pictures of those who died because of wearing a helmet or because someone tried to remove that helmet after an accident. When I had a bike, I wore a helmet unless I was trail riding on my way to go fishing. It was my choice and if I get another bike, it will be my choice to do so again. Maybe people would be happier with a different law. "You will not be kept alive at the expense of society if you are not wearing specified safety equipment when an accident occurs." Then there are no vegetables in hospitals because they weren't wearing their seatbelt for anyone else to pay for. (There is some amount of sarcasm in that)

Ya know...... there are reasons that I find many (if not all) of the recently passed laws concerning Protecting Me From Myself to be bogus. When I was a kid, my parents owned vehicals that didn't even HAVE seatbelts.... but gee, we not only survived, we thrived. (And hell, we got left in the car when mom ran into the c-store for 3 minutes, with the car running, without seatbelts.... and didn't get carjacked, and didn't kill ourselves mucking about with the transmission and putting the car in gear - because we knew if we didn't behave while mom was in the store, she'd make us wish we hadn't been born when she got back to the car!) We didn't have Nintendo and Sega and Gameboy and PS3 (or cable TV, DishNetwork, computers) and all that crap... we got our butts sent outside to play... in the street.... we not only survived, we thrived, and without gasp getting kidnapped (though no doubt there were days when our parents wished we would be! I know with my folks it wasn't "stay where I can see you" it was "be back by supper.") we went Trick-or-Treating in our own neighborhood - not the local shopping mall, zoo, and college campus activities center.... and we not only survived, we thrived (without our parents being paranoid that someone was going to poison us unless - you count the bellyaches from to much candy in to short a time we gave Ourselves!) Our mothers smoked and drank while pregnant with us... and we not only survived, we thrived, and turned out to be intelligent (well, ok, Some of us turned out to be intelligent - some turned out to be Sheeple, but that seems to be what our government Prefers, so maybe the Sheep were being born to the non-smokers and non-drinkers!) We got spankings when we misbehaved or acted disrespectful of our parents... and we not only survived, we Thrived (not only did we Not turn out to be mass murdering psycho-sociopaths we turned out to be better people because there was a wee bit of Discipline instilled in our lives!) There's a country song out (yeah, I know, a lot of ya detest country music.. but hey, at least it Is music, rather than simply rhythmic noise) that mentions a lot of things of this nature. "We were born to mothers who smoked and drank, our cribs were covered in lead based paint.... no helmets on bikes, no seatbelts in cars ... yet still - Here we Are" I believe it was Jefferson who stated - and rightly so - "Those who would sacrifice liberty for a bit of safety, deserve neither liberty Or safety."

What you really missed out on,honey,was the lead paint. It`s making a comeback though,on kid`s toys. Bush is doing all he can to restore the freedom to eat lead paint again. 1960's.Less cars on the roads.Speed limit on highways was lower.Kids could be left in the car for a bit because it was less likely they would be grabbed, unlike today when carjacking is a common event.Halloween candy didn't have to be xrayed. I could go down an entire list but hopefully that makes my point. The world has changed from those days of 'Oh golly we can do what we want when we want'. Yes I think the laws have gotten silly and overdone in many areas and I do see personal rights as a highly endangered species but IMO fighting about seat belt laws is even sillier.There are other things I worry about.

I always get a kick out of the more left-leaning posters suddenly deciding it is ok for people to face the consequences of the choices they make... Consistency, folks, consistency... The last bad accident I was involved in was one where I wasn't wearing my seat belt. Good thing too. Of course, I told the investigating officer and ER personnel I had it on, but every one of them knew I was lying. I was in a '69 pickup with lap belts. If I really had been wearing it, I'd have been hurt a lot worse, maybe in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. It ends when we decide enough is enough. In other words, no time soon.

Do you really want to keep this up ? Because I can see where it is going, colletivism vs individualism. I am responsible for my actions, I and I alone. Therefore nobody tells me what to do. But if you take anything, insurance settlement, anything, you are laying the cost on the collective. You are making others responsibkle for a bad turn in your life. When you do that in any form, you confer power to others over your actions. If I am to pay for your follies, I have every right to regulate your actions to prevent such follies from occurrung, as a result NYC regulates what kind of oil your fries are cooked in, and even though something is needed to regulate the other greedy MFs they just buy off the regulatory agencies. The system does not work. 1890 : Dammit boy, when you climb that tree hold on, it cost two dollars to get you stitched up down at the doc's. We can't be spending that kind of money. 1990 : My son is dead because the law is not enforced. That truck was doing almost 65 in that 60 MPH zone when he ran out in front of it. And I believe that it would have been incredibly simple to Google who actually said that...which is the whole point... people who expect everyone else to inconvenience themselves (by carrying uninsured Motorists coverage, and pay extra for medical care, and hire someone to scrape helmetless and seatbeltless speeders off the road... ) so that the 'rebels'won't have to inconvenience themselves in the least little bit. It's hardly partisan politics, Kitten. It's fundamental world-view, or, as Termy put it, collectivism v. individualism. The discussion isn't which of those is right, but how we place them into balance. I see us sliding deeper into the nanny-state. I'm not thrilled with the prospect.
