ORIGINAL: BitaTruble the paint on the shell doesn't have a whole hell of a lot to do with what that shell is holding. True, Bita, but the paint on the shell can tell the world something about the insides if you want it to do so and allow it to. I'm heavily tatttooed now days, and in the process of sleeving out on one side - all custom work, designed by myself with the help of the various artists that have done the actual inkslinging, all themed, and all of them with very personal meaning. To know the art - it's meaning and symbology to me - is to know ME in a very real sense, and such will be even more the case once I've finally finished getting all the ink done that's currently planned. All that, of course, is beside the point to both the OP and your post. Body image - especially warped body image - can have profound effect on us either for the positive or the negative, regardless of gender or age. It can lead to chronic depression, which has it's own host of attendant problems. It can severely affect both self esteem and our ability to cope with the larger world outside of us. For me, it was going to highschool as a curvy size 7 in a world of size 0s who called me "hippo hips" and "thunder thighs" because I actually had a Feminine figure when they looked like teenage male concentration camp survivors - I grew up with a rather distorted image of what was "thin" vs "healthy" vs "fat" - and I still have problems at times with my perception of the three. I still combat the lasting effects psychologically as well, despite 25 years of experience since then, a lot more practical knowledge gained in both psychology and life in general, and changing perceptions/tastes within the rest of the world. (Thank the gods that Twiggy went out of style for the most part!) Saying "don't let it affect you" is all well and good - and a positive attitude is usually helpful through life - but on the practical side, being told not to let it affect you when it obviously already Has affected things isn't easy to accomplish.
