I ran across a "Dom" referencing  a dom bootcamp he had attended for 16 hours. WTF?  is that for real?  what about "sub" bootcamp, well, that would be absurd, wouldnt it?  I think I am going to faint.  Sorry, but I guess I thought a Dominant man was born that way, not created in a  16 hour bootcamp.  What next?

Oh Good, so all the girls that want a manly man can send their boyfriends off to Dom bootcamp and they'll come back and sweep them off their feet. ...

but if those were the circumstances, would they really be doms?
I'm giving this a big eye roll.

Yea, some of those with Dom talent, may need more formal training to hone their craft.

Yes they do that... I have not seen that in action but I have seen the things they do for submissive women learning wise at "The Lair".  I dont really see a big problem here. If they are getting people legitmate information then I dont see a big issue on how they market the name.  I mean the main complaint of many is that people have no information, so I dont see how people doing something to get information is a bad thing.   Maybe they could pick a better name and I dont think anyone expects  someone to walk out of that experiance being a "Instant Dom".  Everyone has to start somewhere.

How is this any sillier than an overnight business meeting or a religious retreat?

There have been several subs on here that have stated that they received their "training" at some weekend training academy.

Orientation may be born, skills are learned and honed.  Many doms are assholes and jerks and very bad people to get into relationships with.  And clueless doms are almost as bad.

What gets me in the link provided is that they give you a certificate. What about the Dom who has been honing his skills for years, through trial and error, forming his own experience... does a dom like that get a certificate that states how they were overqualified to go through "such and such" training seminar?

From the website I saw, it doesn't look like a bad idea... just bad framing by the marketing guys.

Once again the idea that an  exchange of perspectives and ideas, experiences both successfull and failure couldn't possibly improve the life of a TWUELY NATURALLY DOMINANT MANLY MAN. Good lord why even have the forums if nothing but natural selection can improve the skill sets of dominance and leadership. Since obviously the forums are an outside influence that could run counter to the natural development within a hermeticly sealed bubble.

Is this specific "Bootcamp" a good one or of any value, can't say for sure but there are some like events that certainly draw upon the life experiences of folks who have been there and done that for decades and maybe just might if the attendee is willing and smart learn something from the mistakes and successes of someone else.

General reply to all the natural crowd that poo poo on the idea that nothing about dominance can be learned from others.

One of my pet peeves and maybe a bit too snarky.

I kinda like the idea that the clueless, d or s, can go somewhere to find out at least the basics. If some of the "gimme kinky sex because I'm saying I'm a sub and I want to to spank me and I've been on CM for a week" crowd knew the basics, they wouldn't bother emailing me.

Now looking at the site I'd say it's likely an OK event, and a good idea for someone needing some good basic physical SM skills.

On the other end of the spectrum there are the Journeyman III academies in Utah and San Fransico.
http://ca.j3a.org/

For learning more about various perspectives on the dynamics I would say the JIII academy certainly would havbe more value, but the cost is pretty significant.
But then again I can tell you a graduate of JIII tends to be looked upon as likely to have their shit together more often than not.

OK...I just thought you were responding to something I said. For the record, I think that a LOT can be learned from others, both dominant and submissive. I would never discourage someone from seeking knowledge. I think that the well of wisdom of those who HAVE been doing this for the long haul is one that is not drawn from often enough. I don't however, think that a weekend boot camp will "make" a Dominant...no matter what gets printed on the certificate.

Well as with almost every class of every type the time spent in study as well as the reputations of the instructing core have alot to do with how well any wal hanger is regarded.
A 16 hour weekend is likely to be little more than a momento in my book. A year long monthly meeting with a cadre that are pretty much a who's who. would be something likely to leave a real level of knowledge.

GredyTop Butchmens I can tell you is a weekend that few I have known to have completed have ever had bad things to say about it.
Master Steve's reputation as well as the reputations of the cadre are pretty much golden.
