Part of sensation of the meal is in the aroma of preparation, no? The anticipation, just eating and the experience is over too soon. It is typical of our everyday society that no one savours the full sensation of a meal. Mmmmm chicken.

on a serious note to the OP...what is up with you and cooking?
I realize that very few of us want to get home from work and prepare a gormet meal but there are terriffic recipes on the internet that are very easy to make.

That is a good idea Asher, even more healthy with really lean meat, even turkey and a lot of veggies thrown in. But in reality to the OP, you can't really eat economically and healthy and quickly without learning at least the fundamentals of cooking. Get a simple cookbook, start with a few easy recipes and you'll get the hang of it. I love to cook and for me it is really a way to eat healthy, organic and delicious. Start small, you'll figure it out, promise.[:)]

one thing i suggest is a crockpot. They always come with a recipe book and are awesome for making chili, a pot roast, etc.

aww crap, I had a good idea? *shakes head in shame*

Actually, its my mas fault, once every two months or so I get her the ingredients and she makes me enough chili to feed a platoon, I divide it into smaller bowls, and take it to work, where I always have a good supply of saltines (at 12 hour days at work, I lack time to do anything in the way of pretending to cook) I end up with chili for a month that way, and it always tastes great

Two words. Udder lazyness. That and I just have no drive or motivation to fix things.  Which is bad I know, and I know I should change it, but least I am honest and i'm not making excuses hehe.

I do cook ocasionally but it's always very simple, like scrambled eggs, fried eggs, spagettie, Potato bites, cooked chicken breast with abit of sourcream topping. We do have a crockpot and they're fun, when we lived in a tiny trailer with no stove, or means to cook I did bust out a few nice meals from cutting up a huge steak and marinading one half an putting the other half away for a day or two later. Thanks for reminding me we had a crockpot.

Lean Cuisine, Smart choice.  I've been told that even Nutrisystem is all frozen food.  As with Jenny Craig.
So if you're going to eat frozen why pay so much money for it?  There always seems to be a frozen diet entree on sale
at the grocery store.

Tastes like crap but hey its frozen what do you want?  Its easier to invest in a steamer and just steam up your own veggies...much more tasty.

hey now, not all frozen tv meals taste like crap, there's some pretty damned tasty ones out there* in my opinion* but yes, I didn't like lean Cuisine tv dinners the amount was skimpy an the food tasted poorly.

speaking of crock pots, I was inspired today after this to pull ours out, and I'm doing chicken, with sliced potato's and I wanted carrots, but whomever put the bags of carrots in the freezer just threw them in as is, and they ruined.

The crock pot is your best friend...I have 2, a big one and a little one.  Use it for soups, chili, scalloped potatoes, pot roasts, spaghetti sauces.....almost anything you bake can be done in a crock pot.  Also pasta, but if cooking isn't your favorite thing to do, forget it...it doesn't take long for the pasts to go to mush.  Just a note....line your crock pots with those oven bags when you cook in them....no mess clean up!   I'm with Asher...do up a pot of food, make serving size meals and freeze the suckers.....I can live for a week on a pot of chili, chicken or vegetable soup.  Of course, when I cook, I cook for an Army.....I can't seem to just cook one serving of anything!

There really is no shortcut to cheap and healthy.  Healthy is scratch cooking where you control what goes in it.  Even "healthy" diet food has all sorts of things I wouldn't use to cook with.....preservatives, salt, other things that I can't remember.  I'll buy it for work now and again just to have something fast, and to avoid the eating out routine.

Bag salads/lettuce is great.  I can make my own tossed salads with all sorts of good, fresh veggies, salad dressing and croutons for a week with one big bag, a few tomatoes, cukes, green peppers, celery, carrots.....they also have a smaller single serving bags of lettuce for those that don't eat lots of the stuff, but still want to get some good veggies.

You can find all sorts of recipes for healthy meals on-line...use that as a resource.  I know the American Diabetes Association has tons of free recipes.....Cooks.com, most any manufacturer of foods anymore has a site for them also.  Get rid of things like salt...replace them with different spices....I don't cook with ANY salt....if there's none in the ingredients I use, oh well......you'd be surprised what food really tastes like!  When cooking meals for friends, salt is on the table, but most of the time, it's never used.

Good luck!

Without looking, I'd be willing to bet that a LeanCuisine is what you are suppose to be calling a serving of food unlike Stouffers and especially HungryMan type frozen meals. A serving of chicken for example is about the same size as one deck of cards.

soul2share -> RE: Are there any not so expensive premade food delivery services out there? (5/31/2008 3:28:35 PM)

Camille, you're right.....each meal is a single serving.  I've never had a problem being filled up wih one, but I also eat a salad with just about every meal...it's a holdover from when i was growing up...salad was something we ate every night...and I don't mean a salad that you get in a restaurant....lettuce with a cucumber slice, one piece of tomato and a few croutons....I'm talking about a salad that has all the above listed veggies, and was served in a cereal bowl...now I'll fill a soup plate heaping full of salad just to eat.

Rabbit food is your friend......

Yeah I been having fun looking up a lot of cook once a month websites and recipee's that actual once a monthers liked an found to work, and I'm going to try them! My partner wants to begin to eat healthier and be more contious of what goes into his body as well as I do, so I'll broach the once a month cooking thing with him.

Love that.

Going to have to echo what others are saying about the healthiness (or lack thereof) of frozen dinners.  Since I live alone, I often cook something at the beginning of the week and enjoy leftovers - pasta, chicken, london broil, today it was enchiladas...

If you don't want to do that, want "instant" and want healthy (or relatively healthy), buy a whole pre-cooked chicken at the grocery store (they have them on warmers near the deli) and premade ceasar salad from the produce section - there's two or three chicken caesar's in that.  Or buy any of the premade foods in the deli section - they have all sorts of salads and casseroles and chicken and such.  Or go to the butcher dept and get pre-marinated food, like kabbobs, fajita fixin's, etc.  All you need to do is cook it (on the stove, not the microwave).

But you can't have boxed frozen dinners and healthy nutrition at the same time.  Nutrition comes from whole foods, not flavored, colored and preserved foods.

Twue WoW addicts also eat Ramen

KMsAngel -> RE: Are there any not so expensive premade food delivery services out there? (6/1/2008 1:24:09 AM)

ramen *shudder*

try making a large pot of homemade spaghetti sauce, with or without the meat. divide it up.

* throw in kidney beans and chili spices for chili. add rice. or put it in a nuked potato

* thicken it slightly, top nacho's with it, sprinkle on cheese grated, warm it up - add sour cream and quacamole.

* grate in some extra vegies, layer it with instant lasagne noodles and a white sauce and ricotta - lasagne.

* don't thicken it, add green/yellow beans, carrot chunks, bit of broth - vegetable soup!

* and don't forget, add spaghetti noodles for spaghetti bolonaise!

Spending the day in the kitchen cooking meals for the next few weeks can be alot of fun if you do it together. We generally end up in a food fight. Not my fault...he starts it.......
