I like pot pies! are they overall pretty healthy though? Cause you look at your average microwavable stuff like hungry man tv dinners, and it's a thoughsand calories, 900 grams of salt, and the fat content isprobably through the roof too.

Heck no! They are LOADED w/fat!

**Eta the pot pies you buy in stores are full of fat, but if you google pot pie, you'll find some low fat recipes**

I read the nutrisystem website. It is 300+ and if you read the faq, you still have to add a few ingrediants to the entrees. It is also not a local company so you receive your meals in the mail. I live in Atlanta, Georgia an I know of a place that delivers fresh food twice a week. Here it cost 20s a day or 520 a month. There are 3 or 4 similar services for the same price locally.

I looked up a similar service in california and it cost nearly 50 a day or 1440 a month. (freshdining.com) There is also healthylivingfoods.com for 220 a week or 880 a month. I did find a company called slim down that 25 per day or 680 a month. A caterer (http://yourathomechef.com) will begin at 185 weekly or 740 a month. So far a national well known brand will be less expensive than a local upcoming catering/prepared meals company.

I think that any thing you find that serves california is going to be more expensive. You may want to look into a whole foods or organic food market and stock up on things you really like.

Pot pies have peas in them and peas are disgusting, squishy little bastards.

Try www.recipezaar.com

Search for easy, healthy, meal for 1 or 2 or 10, 4 ingredients or less, crock pot--any parameters you want.

I'll go with "no peas."

Thank you for doing all that leg work* so to speak* I think I've decided to spend all the money a delivery service and prepackaged food programs would cost on grocery shopping and doing once a month cooking.

Maybe your mother is my mother...and we're sisters?
[Edit to add: Did she make ham that seemed to have fish scales on it and liver and onions that inexplicably both ended up to be olive green?]

Congrats on trying to eat healthier.  I can't wait till next month when we will be moved and I'll have time and space to start doing the same.

I know when I was trying to be heathier and lose weight the three biggest things I did was

1. buy fruits and veggies for snacks.  They don't require cooking and are 100% healthy (and fortunately I really  like them.)

2. Learn to make meals with fewer carbs and when I did use carbs always use whole grains.  Not just things that say "wheat" but things that say "whole wheat or grain" and not too much sugar or refined stuff.

3.  Buy water bottles.  Not the most cost effective way but it meant that I never had to worry about finding a clean glass and could grab a bottle to take with me where ever I was going.  I recyled the bottles so I didn't feel bad about all the plastic I was wasting.

The crock pot and once a month cooking sounds great!  It's wonderful that you're taking the initiative to do this and learn the facts.  Rock on!

James is buying me watermellon once a week and I cut it up after refridgerating them and have like 2-3 moderate size slices in one sitting, and I he gets me a pack of water and then we're going to be refilling th ose with water from the water stations in town where it's 25 cents a gallon, and I use tapwater in them if I am going to be making crystal light. And I already do eat whole wheat grain bread, when I do eat bread, been eating whole week bread vs white for about 2 years now:) And I already do not eat cakes and icecreams or cookies or doughnuts or anything sugary very much if not at all.

Asher, where are you getting pot pies for 50 or 60 cents?  do they have any meat in them or what?  I buy Marie Callendar's for my husband... they're almost $4 each
