I am going to vote for Obama because it's time we get a person of color into that highest of offices.

Sounds a touch too much like affirmative action to me... and we all saw how well that experiment worked.

i didn't realise affirmative action was an experiment.  Was the preference for white M/men an experiment too?

i'd never have been admitted to law school in the early '70's...but by the time i applied in the mid-80's, my law school had adopted a diversity policy that sought out qualifiied candidates of different colors and females, by eliminating age restrictions and taking similar action.

My law school graduating class was over  50% women, most of whom were in T/their 30's or older.

Quite a change from the days when most law schools didn't even have ladies' rooms for students.

If affirmative action was/is an experiment, i'd have to say it worked.

I would expect anyone who benefited from affirmative action to share your delight in it. As heartwarming as your story is I am certain Allan Bakke would offer a markedly different personal perspective of it.

How much personal perspective did Bakke have on being a member of a protected class?

I am going to vote for Obama because it's time we get a person of color into that highest of offices  .......................must admit to wondering how you maintain your perch on that high moral horse after positing such blatant racist bullshit....just wondering when the criteria stopped being best man for the job,and i am talking about your criteria, please don't come back at me with past injustices we all know they happened.... and you could probably come up with dozens of legitimate arguments for voting for this very accomplished man .....But please don't admit to voting purely on the basis of color and ask the rest of us to listen to your preaching on racism in this country   it doesn't sit well and is hypocritical to say the least..next time you are tempted to let the rest of us know about the ills of American society remember you cast your vote based solely on color

Please explain that, but before you do realise i will be voting for Obama,i have my reasons(don't believe i have to give them)none of which will be simply the color of his skin.....why is it ironic that i am aghast at the notion of someone casting their ballot solely based on skin color...especially someone who is quick to voice his opinion on the racist tone of this country

I have no problem with the fluff piece. It is mostly just opinions - obviously culled from a variety of sources, esp. African-Americans.

Sometimes it's nice to do something just because it makes other people feel good. If Obama winning will allow African-Americans to hold their heads up a little higher than before, hey that's great.

Wow - Making African-Americans feel good about themselves and hold their head up is a reason to vote for Senator Obama? (I'd vote that way if I had a decent tan...but I don't....so....). Won't the African-American's only feel half good about themselves? As a expect on social engineering feelings, how can you not consider that there would be some people voting for the white half of Senator Obama? (I'd vote for the white half too...unfortunately, I don't live in Chicago....so I can only vote once).  You know, the half that he's embarrassed to say, would walk across the other side of the street if confronted by a group of African American men walking on one side.

No racial prejudice or bigotry of low expectations there is there? A converse vote for Senator McCain to make old balding white guys feel good about themselves is no less legitimate - right? (And, you have something against old, balding, white guys?).  He may represent my democraphic (Oh....never mind then), but seeing him elected will not make me feel good in the least.

(Me neither...WTF??//Over?  I'm a Republican DAMMIT!!!!!).

I can only hope the racists fools who vote for Senator Obama because he is black will be canceled out by the racists fools who will vote against him for the same reason.

We agree.  I can only hope that whoever gets in understands the truly remarkable, and historic circumstances they're in...and leads this country in an appropriate fashion.

However, prejudice aside, I'm glad and jealous that SMC has a reason to vote FOR a candidate. He's ahead of me in that regard. I'm still working on the third party list of suspects.

You know, if an African-American man or a woman had ever been president before I couldn't say what I have said. So what does it mean that I can say it?

Okay first off the little smileys are  great and totally convincing too......Please SMC explain what it means to me i await your enlightenment...i grew up in this country I watched  the civil rights movement ,i can remember seeing dogs let loose on marchers in Birmingham ...i can recall the night Martin Luther King was shot down ...the night Kennedy fell in California...and I have lived to applaud the nomination of the first black man for the high office of President...but what i applaud is that the country finally got to the point where a mans color wasn't a bar to his nomination...i would like to think he was nominated on his merits not for the cynical reason of it was overdue....to me it is a measure of how far this counry has come not a declaration of arrival or of crossing  a finish line....This country has and always has had a problem with race i don't believe your views of "its the black man's time"help ...as a mater of fact i believe viewpoints such as yours do more harm than good ...but since it's America you are entitled to your viewpoint and to cast your vote any way you want ,but maybe you can stop lecturing the rest of us with your "unbiased" opinions

I don't expect the next Pres. to fix everything. At best, they may slow the slide into financial and foreign policy disaster... but, I think he'll make a good start. Unlike McCain, who seems to be more and more "More of the same McCain." or "100 years McCain" or "The President who will load the Supreme Court with sexist reps from the KKK, McCain."

Yeah. Obama. Because the alternative is the GOP scortched Earth policies.

I agree I will vote Obama and hopefully it cant get much worse.

Pink, remind me to make a thread on how well "affirmative action" programs in the 1970's and 80's  worked out on the Boston Fire and Police Depts.
And the two incompetants who had a hand in it were Michael Stanley Dukakis and his Lt. Gov. one John F. Kerry.
And if you want "sources" just read the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald for the last *thirty years.*

Oh, gosh, a brand new program which was formulated to try and level the playing field hit some bumps. That means it was a complete failure.

And, of course, rather than trying to acomodate their fellow citizens, try and help them achieve what they had, try and level the playing field, have a little empathy and understand that the minorities were just trying to have a decent job and raise their families, try and make a good firefighting and police department, the white racist redneck fucks did everything in their power to oppose the African-Americans. Now, many years later, they come back and try and tell me how "Amurkin:" they were.

You fucking disgust me.
