As for pubic hair shaving, I don't see the big deal but then again, I've been shaving for over 20 years.  You get used to it, you rarely nick things, and any nicks that do occur heal quickly.  Oh, and a brand new razor is a lot more likely to tear a person up than one that's been used a little bit, at least in my experience. 
I did have my eyebrows waxed for the first time a few months ago.  That smarted; my friend laughed at me because it made my eyes tear up, lol!  I didn't like the sensation, there was asymmetry, and I found that I can retain roughly the same results (Sans the asymmetry hopefully) with a razor.
