Look what it did to Ted Nugent's career.  Stranglehold doesn't get much airplay anymore, at least around these parts.
Heretic no offence, but I saw Nugent a couple of times(my future ex-wife had a thing for his esquisite guitar playing)and IMO his disappearance from the musical scene had more to do with a dearth of talent than any backlash due to his raging Republicanism....IMO

Alumbrado -> RE: "Shut yer face, Spike!" (6/10/2008 8:00:52 PM)

That's what happens with pretzel logic...

Lol! How much talent does it take to reach the top of the charts with songs aimed straight at the gonads of teenage boys?

Actually Ted is a far better guitar player than he needed to be to rattle the speakers of cars back in the day.

I've been privileged to hear him play in a variety of styles that would never get Top 40 airplay, and I'd confidently put his talent up there with just about anyone.

As far as Ted's choice to market to the loudest common denominator, George Benson cut a string of albums that drew rave reviews for his guitar virtuosity...and sold as many copies as there were archtop guitar players in America in the 70s...maybe 10K worth.

Once he decided to make real money, he cut his playing in half, added a disco backing track, and made booby-dooby noises with his mouth....voila. Multi-million seller after multi-million seller.

So I can't fault Ted for getting rich the easy way, instead of waiting for the record buying public to suddenly grow a sense of taste

That works both ways.  I'm one of the five or six people who buy Roger Waters' solo albums.

It takes guts to admit to this kind of thing.

It gets worse, Kitten.  If you are ever sufficiently bored to watch his In The Flesh concert video in super slow-mo, I'm in it.  It also sounds an awful lot more like the classic 70's Pink Floyd than the guys who wound up owning the name do.

Besides, my musical taste is the least of my blasphemies. [:D]

slvemike4u -> RE: "Shut yer face, Spike!" (6/10/2008 9:10:57 PM)

Hereitic wasn't suggesting he didn't know how to wring every bit out of the talent he had,but his audience were teenage boys as you said and teen age chicks as well...lets not forgot that whole loincloth thing. The man knew his audience...a consummate business man who could play a wicked guitar ...a musical genius hardly...music that stands the test of time ...I don't think so IMO  a for Mistress Tulip you could always beat me for using the word "chicks" would that wok for You   it works for me

TheHeretic -> RE: "Shut yer face, Spike!" (6/10/2008 9:27:15 PM)

Ummm... Mike...  I don't think I raised the merits of Ted's musicianship at all, rather, I was referencing the impact of his public political positioning on his status within the entertainment industry.

DA, Spike Lee is an Oscar winning graduate of Morehouse College as well as having a Master's in Fine Arts from NYU. Granted, not everyone "gets" Spike Lee's relevant social films and prefer things like ohhhh "Men in Black" or other mass produced hollywood brain candy, but he is an avant garde activist filmmaker and artist. He is not a gangster rapper.  Hey I like Clint too, why does it have to be one versus the other? There is certainly enough talent and reputation there to go around.

Im waiting for the gangsta rap / remix of the Marine Corps hymn ...

Aynne, I really dont care where he went to school. Perhaps he should have studied history instead of fine arts as the United States military was not desegregated at the time in question. Other than certain blacks only combat units such as the Tuskegee Airmen or the Buffalo Soldiers blacks were at that time fourth class citizens in support units - cooks, stewards, stevedors.... Watch Cuba Gooding Jr's portrayal in "Men of Honor" for a fairly accurate representation of the status of blacks in the military at that time in our history as Master Chief Brashear was truly the pioneer in integration of the Navy - and like it or not the USMC falls under the Dept of the Navy.

I am sick of the revisionism of history to embrace the role of the black man where he in fact had no such role. I commend movies such as "Men of Honor" or "The Tuskeegee Airmen" which accurately portray the heroic achievements of real blacks in their accurate historical context but when you start rewriting history to have blacks raising the flag on Iwo Jima - SORRY it didnt happen. I mean the recent "Walking Tall" pissed me off to no end. The Rock is a good enough actor, and is extremely popular etc however - BUFORD PUSSER WAS CAUCASION. That doesnt make him better or worse than anyone else - but it was not a black sherrif who drove the state line boys out of McNairy County it was Buford Pusser - a real man with a real family.  I mean lets get real here - what are the blacks going to do if we start remaking movies and casting Brad Pitt as Martin Luther King Junior or Leonardo DiCaprio as Malcolm X?

As for the gansta rap comment. Hip hop is prominent in the soundtracks of Spike Lee films. Hence, it is only logical that it would be in this one as well.... If we change the race of the actual marines to appeal more to the hip hop audience, why not remix the music too so as to appeal to that same audience.

slvemike4u -> RE: "Shut yer face, Spike!" (6/10/2008 9:42:15 PM)

Heretic no problem at all I'm just taking shots at old Ted ...I never realy got over how my future ex used to look at the guy...ya know what I mean...like if I had to go home alone so what...that sort of look...

You do know that, being in fact multi-racial, The Rock does have the necessary "appearance" to convincingly play caucasian, right? I mean when I first saw him in the WWF, it took a couple of years before I knew he was even half black.

If a Marvel Comics / Hollywood union can do things like give Spiderman in-grown, organic "webslingers," (not to mention complete changing Venom's symbiot's origin; give the Hulk a new "trigger" aside from a Nuke; make Carter Slade the first Ghost Rider; give the X-Men yet another origin story complete with new uniforms and subsequent character deaths, and make IronMan's origin occur in afghanistan instead of vietnam.....I think I'm willing to accept The Rock as a small town sherrif who was caucasian in real life.

It's not like he's DMX or Danny Glover. He's the Rock. I'm sure there are some who haven't yet figured out his lineage nor really care to. His multicultural background makes him very versatile in that respect. Hell the first time I saw him, I thought he was italian. It looked on the WWF like he was emulating some cross between elvis and a goodfella.

Heretic my apologies ,it is late and I blew that one I was obviously responding to Alumbrado and plugged Your name in error....sorry .Actually  enjoy the motor city madman on occasion in small doses with large doses of bourbon usually...wasn't like anyone was extolling the virtues of Pat Boone music or anything so no big deal.....

Smith the issue at hand is that his multicultural background does NOT fit the reality of the REAL HISTORICAL FIGURE. http://www.sheriffbufordpusser.com/BufordPhotos.html
Does that look like The Rock??? Is he multicultural??? Thats  the real man whose real wife Pauline was murdered in an ambush, orphaning their real kids... Pictures of whom you can see in the site above... There is a reason they cast Joe Don Baker and Bo Swenson in the first movies... I am not disputing the acting ability of The Rock, or in any way bashing his multicultural heritage, nor do I think that they cant portray a multicultural sherriff fighing injustice. My issue, which holds true to the original point of the "black marines raising the flag on Iwo" is that real historical figures should be portrayed as realistically as possible. Sherriff Pusser was white, as the pictures above show. The marines raising the flag on Iwo were also white.  Carl Brashear was black and was brilliantly portrayed by Cuba Gooding Junior and casting Tom Cruise in that role would be wrong and a slap in the face of the real historical figure and their family. How about if we cast Rosa Parks as Elisabeth Shue, or if we remake The Color Purple and replace Whoopie Goldberg and Oprah with Hillary Swank and Jennifer Anniston? Spiderman, The Hulk, The X-Men are fictional comic book charectors not real historical figures like Sherriff Pusser and the men who took Iwo Jima.

RealityLicks -> RE: "Shut yer face, Spike!" (6/11/2008 1:16:23 AM)

A general response --

I find it strange that some have claimed that Spike shouldn't criticise Clint because he's not "as good" a director.  How many films have you made then?  Then the bizarre attack on Spike's name, come on! Fucking ludicrous.

Of course, as some eventually twigged, Spike has a film in the can about the black experience of Iwo Jima.  But then Clint had the box set of Dirty Harry hitting the high street at the time of his response - they'll probably be having lunch and laughing at you getting your knickers in a twist as you read this.

Just remember, one of Spike's advisors on his film was a black Marine who saw action on Iwo Jima.  He claims that back then, newsreel crews would stop filming when black troops came into shot.  Spike was right to give a platform to the views of a veteran of the battle that his grateful country ignores.  He never claimed that blacks raised the flag, just that they fought in the battle and have been airbrushed out.  Given the response shown here, that seems not only plausible but calculated to rake in more ticket sales.  Post-racial?  More dumb as a post.

PS. When is Clinton gonna make another classic with the Orang-utan?

Well, now that she's no longer in the race for president, likely sooner than later.
