cyberdude611 -> Another reason the UN is a joke (6/23/2008 12:05:40 AM)

The UN Human Rights council says they are "concerned" about Great Britain. They said the British people need to abandon the monarchy and adopt a Bill of Rights.

The irony in all this is that Saudi Arabia and Cuba are members of this council.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/theroyalfamily/2122182/Britain-should-get-rid-of-the-monarchy%2C-says-UN.html

And then everyone wonders why the UN isnt taken seriously anymore....what a joke.

Guess someone forgot to inform them that the Brits have had a Bill of Rights since 1689--which piece of legislation was a guide for crafting the first 8 amendments to the US Constitution a century later.

And this is just another thing we can't get the "Brilliant Legal Scholors" in Washington to listen to us on, getting us O-U-T of the "U.N."

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Another reason the UN is a joke (6/23/2008 7:26:24 AM)

Take the US out of the UN, tell the whole blinkin lot of 'em to find someplace ELSE to sit and bitch to each other about how bad we are...

and while they're at it, pay all their back friggin bills to the US - all that Foreign Aid, back rent on the building, every ticket ever given a foreign national that was then torn up due to 'diplomatic immunity'....

Nice try. Wrong and obviously slanted for political reasons. A D+ mostly for effort.

The report states that the UK should have a written constitution which would lay out both how the government would function and a guarantee certain rights.

People in the UK have been calling for exactly the same thing for a very long time. The existing bill of rights is simply an act of parliament and can be repealed by another. All sorts of other aspects of the UK government are simply based on tradition or centuries old royal decrees.

Yet this hoary mass of tradition is the political antecedent for not only the US Constitution and the first 8 amendments but also to the UN's own charter and human rights document.

The Magna Carta, The Declaration of Arbroath, the Bill of Rights.....the language of human liberty evolved in these monuments of British political history more so than in any other.

For the UN to look askance at the UK is a rather comical impudence born of a most unforgivable historical ignorance.

And you see absolutely nothing wrong with Saudi Arabia and Cuba calling for this?

Typical leftist attitude.

Until the Saudis and/or Cubans invade and force the issue, no.

No I have no problem with a council made up of Angola, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovinia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, China, Cuba, Dijbouyi, Egypt, France, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan. Jordan, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Uruguay and Zambia making a recommendation to the UK. Which is all this is.

There hasnt been any call for this in the UK, sure its been mentioned, even by Gordon bBown,  but by and large there hasnt been a general call for change. Blair actually passed reforms to the UK Constitution while in office, altering many of the old traditions. There will be a new Supreme Court to take over the role of the Law Lords

Our laws are partially written but not codified. Most of it being passed down from common law from the past. It can all be found in statutes and written judgements.

The most important part of our constitution is parliamentary sovereignty as decreed in the 1689 bill of rights. This allows any parliament to pass laws, and not be bound by a previous government. Although the Monarch is known as the sovereign, sovereignty is held by parliament. The monarch can withold Royal Assent to a bill being passed, but this hasnt happened for around 300 years or so.

I always knew you Brits were trouble...better listen up...or they may pass a resolution for peace keepers... I've got my blue helmet liner somewhere... think I'll do my UN march for CNN.

A Bill Of Rights has been Liberal Democrat policy for a few years now.

Kittin, of course you do. You're British,...or is it French this week?
If you're a socialist what's not to like about the "U.N.?"
But in the U.S.most people want out of it.
Jay Leno makes jokes about how inept it is.
When the party's over it's time to go home.
Like they say in the bars at closing; "you don't have to go home but you can't stay here."

kdsub -> RE: Another reason the UN is a joke (6/23/2008 1:48:14 PM)

I have faith in the worlds people... I believe they will make on average good decisions even if they are envious of others. With that in mind I believe the only UN that would work is one without the security council. One in which actions would require only a 2/3 vote for any action or resolution. I wonder if 2/3's would worry about the monarchy of the UK.

Damn how is that for a socialistic view..Of course I still would reserve the right to build a wall around the US.

Termyn8or -> RE: Another reason the UN is a joke (6/23/2008 1:51:48 PM)

Anyone ever read the UN charter ?

Raechard -> RE: Another reason the UN is a joke (6/23/2008 1:56:53 PM)

The monarchy is not the greatest threat to human rights in the UK:
1.       Largest DNA data base in the world thousands of innocents on it
2.        Impressive network of CCTV cameras
3.        No ability to protest at the heart of ‘democracy’
4.       The house of lords (unelected but with powers to throw out laws created by elected officials) although the parliament act can be used to force through laws.
5.       Local councils with powers to spy on the movements of individuals, such criminals as litter droppers and those that forget to scoop the poop.
6.       The police have the ability to hold you for 42 days without charge
7.        Violent pornography act, adults can't consent to activities depicted within and merely having such an image is a crime soonish.

I’m a republican and don’t really care for them but they are the last thing on my mind right now.

Vendaval -> RE: Another reason the UN is a joke (6/23/2008 2:00:52 PM)

Maybe they don't like the queen's wardrobe?  It is rather out of fashion, those hats and all.
