Excellent piece stella - and your new pic rocks!
But as all good pieces of writing, it went over some peoples heads and they come in being what they don't get.[;)]
Ah - I love the smell of irony.

Stella it's just a phrase.  Some people enjoy using it.  Others don't. Why agonise over what other people may be doing, especialy people you only 'know' from the 'net?

Good writing based on poetic truth always sells, whether you are trying to stuff McRibbwhiches down the piehold of a public who claims to want healthier fare or selling WMD's to justify whatever the hell you wanted to do.  Just because something is based upon actual truth doesn't mean it can't be couched and fluffed until it becomes a lie.

There is not much in the OP that I disagree, but I love how it a lythmus paper test for the self-labeled hardcorers to validate they know what they are talking about.

There is only one truth to the lifestyle and relationships of any flavor.  They are a gumbo, every single one of them will be different even based upon the same recipe.  There are no tricks to getting what you want out of life, it always takes grit, work and luck.

Stella41b,

Sorry you got your feelings hurt, but we all make bad choices at times.

I never get statements or sentiments like this (even when they are genuine and understand the posts they are directed to).  It's always so hollow.
Why apologise and be sorry?  Unless you are somewhat to blame?

It seems this is stella's "curse". By writing well and engagingly about complex things ( such as life ) she suffers being misunderstood by those  who tend to view  writing literally and issues as being black or white and/ or personally.

Stella, you are a delight ! Perhaps, though, dear, you should consider using smilies
[image]http://www.collarchat.com/upfiles/smiley/oddballs.gif[/image] to illustrate your points or use colored text when irony or satire are intended.

Edited to inquire : I know what a boxer and pissing are but, wtf is a dock leaf ?

A dock leaf is what Adam asked Eve to cover her private parts with when he accused her of being fat 'cos she ate too many apples. She left, their kids killed each other (like most teens would when not being attended too) and Eve blamed the snake........even then that straight vanilla man-woman game wasn't working.
I blame snakes too but what the hell would I know. . (Prinnie follows cjan's instructions and puts all ironic statement in red..........)

It is more fun for others perhaps to take what is an interesting post at face value and discuss what they feel. If something is just meant or taken as irony, what then does it mean in terms of subsequent posts. They can say " Jolly good, what hilarious irony" but what else? It can just seem as though all you get is much sage head nodding at the cleverness of it all and without any other substance, it seems a bit empty.

More fun to just debate as is written and allow people to get steamed up and stir up some fiery responses.

And I wonder how many politicos are into kink? [8|]

Well here's a tiny snapshot of what was happening during a small part of the 'naughty nineties' here in the UK during John Major's ill-fated attempt to get us all back to moral basics........
PS I got a call btw on Feb 5 from a friend who is a Fleet Street 'hack' who knew about the auto-asphyxiation a few days it seems before the story officially broke........House of Commons? now there's a lifestyle for you....good job it's a democracy though otherwise I'd be banged up even for posting this.

It depends what type of irony you refferring to.

My favourite type of irony is dramatic irony
(well it would be eh?) by which I mean that the audience or narrator (who oft times stumbles on stage) knows something the actor(s) don't. Or even better that the character knows or sees something the audience doesn't....as in the ghost of hamlets father (which must have had an original Elizabethan audience shittin their pants and looking round for the nearest exit).
Now the irony of Stella's post is that i know that I know something that you don't know. And I know that Stella knows more about what I don't know than I do. Got it?
anyway that's the plot thus far.
I know I love her because of what she knows that even I don;t know.
Dramatic!

Simple...empathy. Some of us got borneded wit dis extra weird ting. I know it sounds odd, but we really do feel bad (not grotesquely, "gotta cry" bad, just "awww, darn it" bad) for people who appear to be having a hard time or are having bad stuff happen to them. I think that trait is reinforced during upbringing, by being encouraged to try & put ourselves in the other person's place. To those with the trait, that encouragement takes hold naturally & reinforces the propensity, to those without, it's an academic exercise to teach us not to be egocentric.
I've found that both types tend to look across the creek at one another & shake their heads slowly. Ahhh life! What diversity! Happy Monday morning y'all!

No, you have lost me...Please explain as I don't understand.

What is the irony in Stella's post? That you know something you know I don't know? What exactly is that?

If I were to seriously dissect the OP, I would say that referring to the "BDSM lifestyle" is confusing. BDSM ("Bondage & Discipline, Sadism & Masochism") is a form of play. No one plays all the time, in or out of the scene.

D&S ("Domination and Submission"), on the other hand, can be both a form of play and also indicate certain lifestyle choices.

But might I be allowed to say that i am a masochist all of the time? i mean it's my ground of being and not something I can 'take off' like a pair of high heels. Now not ALL of my behaviours are masochistic (before the behavourists jump down my htroat....on second thoughts please do).....but I have had to seriously work at my behaviours which are for my own 'non-pain'...in other words I seriously have to work on putting myself first, putting myself forward, and have had to work extremely hard on my feelings of self-worth, self-esteem and self-confidence because of my essential ground of being.
Howver having said all of that I would never say i was in the lifetsyle because of my essentail nature. (To me that would be like saying my house was styled by IKEA, or whatever......).
Btw my household is styled ethically.......(won't de-rail here).

Well I guess that makes me one of those less than bright people that don't get it and I must also be one of those that come in being what I don't get.

I have no problem with irony but it should have been posted in Off-Topic if that was her point.

Apparently I'm not in the Stella-loop and actually, foolishly took it at face value.
So very silly of me, I should be ashamed of myself.

But I'm not.

All she had to do was indicate that it was not to be taken as she wrote it then those of us that replied as if it were a genuine post wouldn't be shelved under 'those that just don't get it because they are exactly what she is talking about'.

Aileen1968 -> RE: The BDSM lifestyle is just a pile of bullshit.. (6/30/2008 8:00:06 AM)

I didn't get it either...chalked it up to not enough coffee.  We must not be real enough or in the loop enough.  How's that for irony?
