Excellent piece stella - and your new pic rocks!
But as all good pieces of writing, it went over some peoples heads and they come in being what they don't get.[;)]
Ah - I love the smell of irony.

the.dark.

It is more fun for others perhaps to take what is an interesting post at face value and discuss what they feel. If something is just meant or taken as irony, what then does it mean in terms of subsequent posts. They can say " Jolly good, what hilarious irony" but what else? It can just seem as though all you get is much sage head nodding at the cleverness of it all and without any other substance, it seems a bit empty.

More fun to just debate as is written and allow people to get steamed up and stir up some fiery responses.

It depends what type of irony you refferring to.

My favourite type of irony is dramatic irony
(well it would be eh?) by which I mean that the audience or narrator (who oft times stumbles on stage) knows something the actor(s) don't. Or even better that the character knows or sees something the audience doesn't....as in the ghost of hamlets father (which must have had an original Elizabethan audience shittin their pants and looking round for the nearest exit).
Now the irony of Stella's post is that i know that I know something that you don't know. And I know that Stella knows more about what I don't know than I do. Got it?
anyway that's the plot thus far.
I know I love her because of what she knows that even I don;t know.
Dramatic!
PS haven't got the energy to correct typos...............

No, you have lost me...Please explain as I don't understand.

What is the irony in Stella's post? That you know something you know I don't know? What exactly is that?

Yes I do feel I know and indeed understand Stella....we have a wonderful PM thing going and a psychic connection and  yes there is a great deal I know I know which backs up what I feel is an insight into her OP. Which isn't reflected in some of the responses.
But the beauty of dramatic ironty: I will never know whom else there is in the audience who understnds less or more than I do.
Stella is the maestra here.......(my attempt at feminising maestro).

Fast reply - Perhaps some people didn't 'get it' because of the cultural divide. All the local Brits seem to have 'got it'. I thought it was funny as hell. If you didn't 'get it', it's no reason to be angry, upset or offended: rather, you could take it in your stride and laugh at yourself for 'not getting it'. Stella's post is a well-written piece of satire, not an indictment on your personal choices and 'lifestyle'.

It's funny that people take this so seriously: it's comedy, for crying out loud [:D] .

Dear kittinSol
Fucking briliiant insight. And to help out here from the Wiki is a definition of satire:
Satire is often strictly defined as a literary genre or form; although, in practice, it is also found in the graphic and performing arts. In satire, human or individual vices, follies, abuses, or shortcomings are held up to censure by means of ridicule, derision, burlesque, irony, or other methods, ideally with the intent to bring about improvement.[1] Although satire is usually meant to be funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humor in itself so much as an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit.
Now IMPO although wit is an art form, satire elucidates even further as it it based upon not the desire to make light of one's own insights but to bring light onto those areas not normally voiced from the darkness of one's experience.
IMHO (humble...who knows if you consider me honest)....there are very very very many roads that Stella has travelled, bare foot and ungendered metaphorically that I have never yet walked. The hot coals of the sopul. So: yes it was satire but nevertheless of the quality that had me speechless with respect.

I would've categorize it as tragicomedy rather than straight comedy because it contains some rather dark truths.  I was kind of surprised when people took it literally and presented their position as if she had put forth a thesis for discussion.  I mean, really, now.

I think it is a valid subject for discussion, whether intentional or not. The ensuing discussion reminds me of the media's coverage of the upcoming presidential election--much talk of tactics and stratagies and little talk of substance and issues.

How is declaring it crass and nauseating to dare question posters or their reasons for posting, not making them into icons?[:D]

Actions do not always equate to a representation of personality.
But yes, in this instance, it does make them icons.[;)]

I haven't even the excuse of not enough coffee [;)].
It must be natural stupidity on my side to have taken that very long and unhappy sounding post as genuine. I do that a lot, I assume that people are writing at face value in this section of the forums and I react off of that belief.

The thing is, I am glad I react that way. I am glad I don't scrutinize every piece of writing trying to see if it is irony or if it is real emotion. I'm glad that I trust people overall and that I have a real desire to understand and perhaps even help.

Trust your instincts.  There are always going to be people who will want to take advantage of the sympathy of others, don't let that dissuade you.

I disagree.

Try to read and comprehend wit, irony and sacrasm -- it isn't that hard.

Try to avoid being sucked into psych-dramas of people you don't know, esp on the boards.  IME, may people will post fantasies and reacting to them as if it's a 'damsel is in distress' every time is a least a waste of your time -- at worst it'll draw autobiographical info out of you, causing you to be indsicreet are acting against your own best interests.

You do need to comprehend what you read -- and you do need to exercize judgment.

Of course.  Which I personally believe is pretty healthy - it's simply another judgement we make for our own choices.  I would be more suspicious of someone who wasn't or denied they even had their own.
But we all create them - and destroy them.
Intentionally, purposefully or otherwise.

I wanna be pendantic! :) I think from a literary perspective, the op works better as tragicomedy than satire.  I admit, I'm not especially fond of satire to begin with, but in this case, I'm not sure what the target of the satire is.  The idea that the lifestyle brings fulfillment?  The fools who seek fulfillment in the lifestyle only to find a garden hose up their butt?  Fools who find fulfillment in having a garden hose up their butt?  Or even the idea that people will be better off if they take their fantasies off line? Having re-read it, its this latter one that stands out in my mind as the most likely candidate.  Its not really clear to me.

~FR~

Well, well. What an interesting thread. What was really brillant was posting the OP in this particular category of the boards. Had this been posted in the humor section it would never have gotten the attention that it has gotten in General BDSM discussion. Location, location, location.

The social commentary - there are among us, the good, the bad and the ugly - has been said hundreds of times however this answer to the piece Midori wrote is the difference between mediocre and outstanding.

Kudo's.

I can't speak on Stella's behalf... but I will anyway lol. The humour is all in the writing style, in the characters, and in the exaggerations she peppered her post with: the underlying motivation seems to be earnest - she doesn't believe in a 'lifestyle', like many other posters, incidentally - but she decided to put it in such a way that her ranting has a comedic quality. Humour's suggestive, and what makes one person laugh will irritate an other... c'est la vie!
I agree and that is the same impression I got, that there was an underlying message.  That is why in my reply I said something about BDSM not being wholly unique for everyone and that we have commonalities… a lifestyle.

LOL.....Holy fucking God, that's fucking torture!!!!!!!....  There's no way in hell I could ever submit to listening to the Chili Peppers, Enya, or Enigma.....  I'd rather have a pipe enima up my ass than listen to those shitty bands.....  God those are some hard fucking limits for me.

Throw on some death metal (Suffocation or Cannibal Corpse) and I'm totally fine.....but I could never tollerate shitty music,....that's extremely tortorous.

WhisperSupremacy,
Now THIS is one of the funniest responses on this thread. Not to say that there weren't anymore, but Gawd, do I love this response! Nice! I have never thought of any kind of music being a "hard limit" but I can see  your point! Something about hearing Enya while I am playing hard with a submissive is a little stomach turning to me as well.

Second time this week I have heard of the band Cannibal Corpse. Ironic.

bipolarber -> RE: The BDSM lifestyle is just a pile of bullshit.. (6/30/2008 3:45:19 PM)

Getting back to the OP's point... (and they do seem to have one) Yes. The BDSM lifestyle is a big pile of BS. But, I hasten to add, it's not the only big steaming pile of BS in this pasture of inter-human relations. You'll find similar big steaming piles under the heading of straight dating, civic groups, church groups, blood relations (sometimes called families, before people really have a good close look at them.) schools, social classes of all types (primarily dependant on how much money you earn) and so on and so forth.

The interesting thing is, with the dumping of all this steaming BS onto the ground, it becomes quite fertile, and eventually, nice things begin to grow because of it.

Experience, and learning from it, is like that.

Oh, and "Darcy&the Dark?" I'm sorry that you don't seem to comprehend empathy. (Yes, I'm apologizing to you... because I find the shortcoming a little sad. Mostly because I've been in that state, of being unable to relate to others emotionally, and I know it really sucks.) But don't worry about it... sometimes these little flaws just take a while to work out. :)

RedMagic1 -> RE: The BDSM lifestyle is just a pile of bullshit.. (6/30/2008 3:49:10 PM)

Camille, may I say that your responses are my favorite on this thread?  I think it's a good policy to respond to any OP as though the question asked is serious.  Who cares if you get taken for a ride?  Someone might search for that exact question years later, and be able to read what you wrote.

I also think SunnyTawse brought up excellent points.

If you engage in irony-edge-play on a multicontinental message board, you have to expect radically different interpretations of what you post.  The "Brits" (and Floridians[;)]) don't have the One Twue Understanding here.  The OP is noticeably absent, letting the writing speak for itself.
