I just got finished listening to the latest news on gas prices.
Are you ready to start paying at least $7 a gallon of gas in the fall?
Oil prices pass $143 a barrel for first time - Oil & energy- msnbc.com

Environmental Capital - WSJ.com : Oil Shock: Analyst Predicts $7 Gas, "Mass Exodus" of U.S. Cars

I feel sorry for those that will surely be struggling with their high heating bills
this winter.
Hang on to your pocketbooks and wallets, they will soon be empty of less cash!

The state of texas will not issue me a drivers license due to uncontrollable spasms in my lumbar spine that causes temporary loss of control to my leg muscles.

HOWEVER, the cost of hay per standard square bale is still below six dollars per bale, the cost of alfalfa is still less than 8 dollars a bale, and I can still purchase a month's supply of oats for under 100 bucks.

Translation.... my horse gets much better milage than your car.  All you city type folks that have to have AC and heating and stuff are just spoiled....
Besides, me and my horse can go places you aint gonna get a car.

Now granted, I do own an old cj7, but that is only for the possibility of the world going completely nuts and I feel the need to bug out.  Not only am I gonna take my firearms, but I gonna take my horse as well.

Personally?

I won't be able to afford food, especially fresh food.

I'll be forced to leave the heat off altogether and won't be able to substitute electric heaters for my gas furnace, as my electric company is dependent on oil.

It gets very cold here; I may lose water as the pipes freeze.  I may contract pnemonia.

The neighborhood will lose more and more retail businesses, more safety personnel will be laid off and crime will begin to take root.  No more leaving the door unlocked to run to the store.

Since I won't be able to look to the cops to protect me, I may have to consider investing in a concealed carry permit, handgun and shooting lessons.  I dread this possibility.

None of my neighbors remember the Great Depression.  I expect to see all sorts of bad behavior, from hording to outright violence.

There are dark days ahead.

10 million fewer cars on the road. What a fine thing! Get the damn teens off the road that commute to school. That's what busses are for. That by itself will likely ease congestion.

I don't drive much so it won't effect me much. It's gonna kill the airline industry and put a serious hit on trucking, continuing the trend of increasing rail shipping.

I'm in the suburbs, but very close in, about a mile or so from the Chattahoochie. They're buying 300K houses and tearing them down in my subdivision (1600 houses). Our home prices keep edging up. Makes me thrilled, as I own my house outright. That's a nice chunk for my later retirement, should I decide to cash in.

Of course, all bets are off if the Greater Depression comes sooner rather than later. IMO, we're seeing the beginning of the collapse of the American model of land use and development.

Public transportation is fine if its available where you live but it is only one issue. The price of everything goes up when fuel prices go up. When your paying $5 or $6 for a box of cereal then public transportation won't help.

- fast reply -

what gets me here is our insulation as a country. plenty of countries in the world - even developed ones - are already paying that much per gallon of gas, and they've managed to live with it. i mean, like candystripper said, it's not going to be a picnic (i for one am going to have to give up food for good soon...it's a good thing i have a bit of fat stored away), but this idea that we're somehow entitled to affordable gas contradicts the experience of, well, the rest of the world (along with being entitled to running water, central heating and air, etc.). not saying i don't like gas (although i don't know how to drive, so i depend on public transportation), and i understand that people are freaking out about this and it is in many ways a crisis, but we are still very blessed; we've been the last country to be touched by this problem, just like we're the last country to be touched by every other shortage in the world. and we still have it pretty damn good.

respectfully,
a'ishah.

Many are not going to be able to afford fresh food, real soon.
I would suggest stocking up on canned foods that you find palatible,
especially when it is on sale.
I found a brand of "home cooked" canned foods that include rice/beans and spinach,
that when heated up are actually very, very tasty.
There are some new brands of canned foods that are a far cry from what was around
when I grew up.
Stock up and at least keep a supply for emergencies, I can tell you the brand on the other
side if you like.
I have about 50 cans, stocked up, and plenty of my favorites {rice/beans} they are
delicious.
lol

Awhile back you stated that you had a pension and health insurance, IIRC.  Why not move to an area with a warmer clime and lower costs?

Now if you do stay, you can turn down the heat quite bit and still keep from freezing pipes.  Then you wear warmer clothing.  No need for pneumonia.

Why wouldn't the police be able to protect you (as much as they could now)?

Here is a weird siting at a gas station near me. There is a gas station in Brentwood which has always been the highest in the area and I guess all more well off people are finally going and seeking to get their gas at cheaper stations...Well, anyway a friend told me that this gas station is now handing out flyers to ask their customers to support them still and not go elsewhere even though they are much higher than a few miles away....That is a first i think...ha ha..since they don't want to lower their prices!

The brand that I can't say enough good things about is called "GLORY" foods.
They sell seasoned carribean style black beans and rice, new orleans style red beans and rice,
collared greens and spinach.  They sell other products but I have not tasted them.
I rinse the food off, before I cook it to get rid of a lot of the salt.
Glory foods are delicious!
They have soul!
lol

Ah, a'shah! they are delicious!
They taste so good, I plan to buy about 7 big cans heat them up

and take them to my next cook out.
I bet they will be eaten up!
I might even have the nerve to boil some red bliss potato's and throw them in the pot.

awww. yeah, i was worried about that. it looks like their "sensibly seasoned" sides are meatless, though - including collard greens, alhamdulillah.

There are dark days ahead, the Great Depression of 2008/2009 probably will
go down in the history books.
BUT, at least we see this coming and can do things.

You can prepare, we all see "the perfect storm" coming.
You can stock up on canned foods, and warm clothes and blankets, Pinky.
Since, you live up North you should start buying blankets.
Pinky? Buy one of those blanket snuggle suits, you can zip it up and wear it
when you type on Collarme.
My heat was out for a week in November, before I got a new heater, I slept in my hat,
robe and had several blankets.

I believe families are going to start becoming closer, and people are going to be
reaching out more to others.
A lot of people are going to be making changes, at least you can think ahead and plan.
You don't have to sit back and be taken by surprise.

i'm just SO tired of it.. theres ALWAYS an "excuse" for why gas went up THIS time.. gotten so sick of it, that i havent payed any attention THIS time... so, why now is the per barrel price $143.00 plus?

its all just a scam, because they know people are going to likely want to do some traveling over the holiday, so better hurry up and find another new reason for each barrel to cost more. That way, they line their pockets, while the public feels they cant whine or complain.

If i think back, some of the reasons have been ~the war, ~and then the Hurricane hitting New Orleans, Mississsippi area, and on and on and on.. always a new excuse.

I am thinking about ways to really get through hard times.  Harder than they have already been and still function, stay healthy and have some sort of life.  If I have to, I will heat one room, use an electric heater for when we need that extra bit of heat because we are too cold and somehow time cooking with a colder time of day so that that heat can be used.  I will conserve on lighting with thrift store candles and save that electric for the extra from the heater.  Less tv time, less computer time, unplugging things not in use, etc.

Beans are a good food and should remain within reason price wise considering the cost of meats or other proteins but they take longer to cook.  So a crock pot might be best for that, rather than on the stove.  I used to double pan things.  Like if I can cook beans and put a screen on top and cook veggies or something and then cover both... that saves a little.  We are going to have to learn to save even just a little bit here and there and hope it adds up to savings.

I am already working on a tight budget and in our household, this situation could mean some very serious things, so I am getting very serious on how to camp out in a sense.  Rough it and keep on smiling.  I think this may be a time when many have to double up, live together, share, team up and survive.  It sure is easier sharing the burdens, saving on um care and such to afford a better life somewhere in life.  Get back to some basics and learn to be less independent so that more make it through with less hardship.

These are very good strategies Lockit!
The idea of a roommate is starting to look better and better.
*A submissive roommate?*
It is going to start getting cold in about 8-12 weeks, and we know gas/heating oil is going to be sky high.

If you are smart, and money is an issue, I would start thinking ahead.
I heard on the news, some people will have gas/heating oil bills that will TRIPLE this winter.
