Shel -> the word Domme (7/1/2008 2:33:07 PM)

This post will probably get me lots of hate mail but it needs said Domme is not a word. It does seem to have wide acceptance but it is not a real word.  Dom is an abriviation of Dominant a word which is without sex.   ive been told its french its not.  Correctly the words Fem Dom or Dominatrix apply  as do Dominate ,Owner, and Master.   It always amazes me when otherwise articulate Women use that imitition of a word

AquaticSub -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 2:39:56 PM)

I would consider domme a vernacular word actually. A word, or particular definition of a word, does not need to be in the dictionary for it to effectively communicate the desired meaning. Another excellent example is the word submissive. According to http://www.merriam-webster.com, submissive is only an adjective so, by that standard, it is incorrect to label oneself, or anyone else, as "a submissive".

TheGaggingWh0re -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 2:41:34 PM)

I find the whole thing to be a piss-fest about semantics.
Just like when I say Domme, I pronounce it "Dommie", and people get all up in arms like it is the end of the world! The community has created a female version of the word Dom. I see no problem with it.

Lockit -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 2:45:31 PM)

Articulate women not only use imitation words sometimes, but they also use imitation cocks!  What is society coming to?!

Posts complaining about grammar and word usage would be better received if grammatically correct. [8|]

When you want us to take you seriously, learn to type a proper sentence with punctuation and spelling.

Neither are "abriviation" or "imatation."

Dominate does not apply.  Dominate is a verb, and a person cannot be a verb.

Good luck here, sport.  I think you're going to need it.

MsStarlett -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 2:58:00 PM)

Words 'become' Twue Words through usage.  When I was a child, adults used to tease "Don't say ain't 'cause it ain't in the dictionary."  Now it is.  Same thing for "Lite" meaning lower in calories.  It was not a 'proper' word until it became so commonly used as to gain status in the Webster's New World Dictionary.  If there were more people who admitted to being in the lifestyle, perhaps 'Domme' would also be elevated.

For now.  Stop bitch'n about it.  We know what it means.

If you are going to correct people's grammar, then you need to be aware that the appropriate word is domin-ant not Dominate.. dominate is a VERB, not a -noun-.

Also, Domme is listed as a -legitimate word- in the encyclopedia, as is Domina.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 3:56:20 PM)

It's sad that I agree vehemently with the main point that "domme" isn't a word and that if it is pronounced, it should be pronounced identically as "dom" but yet the OPs usage of language itself fairly negates any claims she could have on accuracy.

But, like not showing bra straps and not asking for money in a wedding invitation, it's a war that's already been lost and simply will not cease to be done.

It's a word in the dictionary I use.....

bipolarber -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 4:09:28 PM)

When people pronounce it "Dom-may", it's like fingernails on a blackboard with me... The "me" is silent. But, if others want to use it that way, I'm not gonna stop them... (hell, I'm in the south... I'm used to the people around me sounding like they belong on an old episode of "Dukes of Hazzard") Luckily, being tied to a chair and being forced to listen to fingernails on a backboard isn't a limit with me...

I just have one question.  Were you born a masochist, or is a learned skill?

PainSmith -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 4:21:16 PM)

Comedian versus comedienne, actor versus actress, waiter versus waitress, the English language is full of places where different words are used to describe a man or a woman doing the same job. Sometimes the distinctions are dubious, when gender doesn't really affect a role, but sometimes they're important because gender provides an essential something. The role played by an actress is different to that of an actor, even if the skills are the same. The role played by a domme is different to that played by a dom, even if most of the skills are the same.

I tend to pronounce domme with greater emphasis on the 'm' than dom, so the word sounds slightly longer.

Prinsexx -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 4:29:43 PM)

Domme, Dordogne, commune of the Dordogne département, in southwestern France.....I bet they get a problem with spray cans on their road signs.......

Venatrix -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 4:33:24 PM)

We must forgive the OP.  He is, after all, only a Shel of a man.

Prinsexx -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 4:35:35 PM)

My sincere apologies, especially to the Moderator. I do not wish it to appear that I am not taking this thread seriously.

ServingGirrl -> RE: the word Domme (7/1/2008 4:54:20 PM)

Language is a constantly evolving thing, as seen by the list of 'new' words added to the lexicon's of the world each year.   Domme may have once not been a word but, given its now-wide use, acceptance and the commonly accepted understanding of the meaning of the term, it completely qualifies as one now, as both a proper and improper noun and as a verb.   Accordingly, and with all respects to Shel, i have to disagree with the comment that Domme is not a word.
