I wouldn't for three reasons.

1.  He liked women.

2.  I like women.

3.  That dude was dangerous.

No. He was a sadist first and foremost while I prefer a Donminant. I'm a submissive more than I am a masochist.

Plus, I really like living.

Well ... hmmms ... I do feel there is a difference between the persona of the Marquis as shown in the stories and the actual man himself. Remember  he never killed his wife and there is scant evidence to say he ever actually killed anybody - well any of his sexual partners .. obviously when in the army he probably killed a few people .. one would hope anyway. Though his writings are filled with the most extreme and dangerous of activities do not forget the man was intentionally being shocking, intentionally trying to frighten and disturb his audiences. The girl he supposedly procured, kidnapped, imprisoned and abused in 1768 climbed out of a high window of his castle to escape ... shit the play cant have been that heavy .. I can barely stand after a "cute" paddling from DV ... that bitch could climb? .. in a big dress? ... with no rope? ... in corsetry ? ... that bitch was hardcore!

I probably would submit to the Marquis ... he was *fucking* clever, there is no doubt in my mind at all he would deliver the mother of all mind fucks  .. we could have good chat before he sewed my mouth closed ... and besides ...if we were in his historical context ... the cattle prod hadn't been invented ... and the elver import trade was prolly pretty unreliable.

wow, you learn something new every day...the Marquis de Sade killed people?

this slave has found that sadism compliments her masochism quite nicely.  it might be interesting and intriguing to spend some time with him, however, she only submits to Master, so the Marquis would be out of luck...unless he wants to ask Master's permission, first.

As 'softness' points out, the Marquis was a writer of fiction. He was politically and, perhaps, monetarily motivated. A minor league aristocrat he also had a goal of poking fun at religious hypocrisy. His torture references, and stories, were inspired from the Inquisitor's Handbook. The fact that he sexualized torture and admitted that giving and receiving pain aroused him was what made him unique. That is, 'unique' is writing about it, and publishing it for the 'masses'.

In his time sexual torture and hedonistic pleasures of the flesh was a franchise limited to the hierarchy of the Church and the ruling class. His crime was letting it be know to the general public. You can say he was the Larry Flint of his day. Creating 'buzz' for his work by making its politically incorrect subject matter.

technically speaking  .... no He wasn't ... Masochism .. named after Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch ... wasn't an independent concept until the 1860's at the very earliest.... much later than de Sade was writing.

It was coined by The term masochism was coined in 1886 by the Austrian psychiatrist von Krafft-Ebing after reading Masoch's literary works describing his "perversion".

Technically speaking .. even "Sadism" isn't all that old The German psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing introduced the terms "Sadism" and "Masochism" into the medical terminology in his work Neue Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der Psychopathia sexualis ("New research in the area of Psychopathy of Sex") in 1890.

nods .. the Marquis was making a wild and inflammatory statement about personal freedom in a time when drastic oppression was the norm. Sexual experimentation was *his* way of exploring his personal intellectual freedom.

great thread ... I even just got Eugenie de Franval off the bookshelf .,.. man this one is *dusty*

Then technically speaking he wasn't a Sadist either.  I don't know when that word was coined, but I'll bet he never used it, or its french version.

While the currently used words may not have existed at the time, he WAS none the less both a Sadist and a Masochist, or a sadomasochist.  Nobody called him this during his actual lifetime.  Most people then just called him insane.

screwy thing is id probably give it a shot too - just been reading The Historian a fictional story around Vlad the Impaler, and id probably go there too.. jeeze! -

the two were profoundly sadistic, Vlad infact far worse than dracula - who i think is quite a sensual, if fictitous character.

i think there is something about the power of a mind that can turn pure evil into something sensual - and the charisma, intelligence and charm before hand - well, for a little while, until it started to get really really scary - and i would definitely have impalling as a hard limit.
