He was imprisoned several times. None were spectacular arrests except the one where he was tricked. They told him his mother was sick and when he went to visit her they arrested him. In fact she was more than sick, she had died.

Nicely said. I feel the same way, Marquis De Sade was at best on par with what we got going on in literature or movies these days. Movies like Baise-Moi, Death Dancers, Flower and Snake, In My Skin, Hostile, 8mm and Saw all feature extreme BDSM, death, mutilation violence and rape.

Err... Vlad Tepešz was a national hero, and Dracula was banned for that reason for a long time. Bear in mind that he had a hard job to do in a difficult time. The problem with Sade was, that he was still a man of his time, even as he rebelled against the government as it existed. He was born and brought up as an aristocrat, and was programmed from an early age to see servants as his personal property. (Not unlike our current administration, who refers to average US citizens as "the help.") The first time he was arrested was because he attempted to rape a chambermaid. (A crime, even then.) Things didn't improve for him after that.

Eventually, his views and writings became such an embarassment, that his family paid hefty bribes to the French judiciary, to keep him in prison as long as possible.

His real life attempts at living according to his "philosophy" always landed him in deep trouble with the authorities. The man existed long before playing sane, safe and consentually became the standard.

He was a loon. His writings, alternating between extreme torture porn erotica, and ham fisted political presenting-opinion-as-fact... are about as entertaining as a root canal.

So... no, I don't think I would.

Yes, I would submit to him. I first read his works when I was 13. The M de S's works are what first caught my attention about BDSM and what drew me into the lifestyle.

About 5 years ago I read a biography of the MdS. After reading about him invading his own ass with very, VERY wide glass dildos and reading snippets of his fiction, I mournfully said to my best friend, "If the MdS met me, he would think I was really borrrrrring." Dave let that statement hang in the air for a moment and then gently but sardonically said, "I think that's a *good* thing."

I'd like to be a fly on the wall at a dinner party where he was, but I'd no sooner play with him than with Johnny Rotten -- too self-absorbed, too chock full of his own entitlement.

I did appreciate the semierotic B movie called Daughter’s Of Darkness though. It is among my B class vampire horror films.

It seems many here were age 13 when first reading MDS. So was i. i must agree with ResidentSadist that MDS was part of my own development, and i "submitted," by understanding and accepting that it was possible to live a life of the mind which was uncensored, and to allow my mind to know itself, both dark and light.

As the historical figure who existed in his time, his methods of procurement are not the kind which would make me wish to be fodder for his fantasies, however.

It's not as if she didn't have more than her share of fun. Yes, some were just drained, a matter of her beliefs about the effects she thought blood would have on her skin. Those weren't the only victims, though, if memory serves. Of course, these days, vanity has a bunch of other effects, but that would sort of be off-topic.
