Which type of lifestyle Master is most feared or respected,Gorean,or Old Guard?
And Why?

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Which is most feared/respected (11/10/2005 12:54:37 PM)

For me actually neither.

Both Old Guard (as used in today's terms) and Goreans are actually usually marginalized and mocked by the bdsm culture at large. It is only within the specific sub-cultures themselves that they gain respect as such.

I respect people as people.

Also, I don't respect people I fear.

Padriag -> RE: Which is most feared/respected (11/10/2005 1:03:19 PM)

Hmmm... none of the above. Fear and respect are not the same thing, anyone who thinks they are has a lot to learn about both leadership and dominance.

The most respected master is the one who takes the time to earn the respect of others through his actions, integrity and the fact he gives a damn about somebody besides himself.

Being Gorean, Old Guard, New Guard, New Age, Stone Age, or just someone doing their own thing has nothing to do with it.

The people I most respect are those who have earned my respect.

The people I fear (fear for what they can and will possibly do to others) are those who are ignorant and have no respect for others.

Fear the abusers who come in Dom's clothing and end up putting you in the emergency room. Respect Men and Women of any stripe when you feel moved by something they have written -- or better yet, have done. In the end, behavior is the litmus test of any Man (or Woman) whom you'd consider as your One.

respect is something that is earned....
one can be in either grouping and not be respected or feared by others.
it depends on the individual, not the group they are in.

and why would one want a master they feared?

Fear is a strong word, so is respect. In a trusting relationship you may fear discipline or disapproval. You hopefully respect that person enough to learn from the experience.

pretty much sum it up.

Personally, I can't think of enough bad things to say about Gorean BDSM. One could just as effectively choose Dr. Suess as a BDSM role model.

I will beat you when you strip.
I will beat you with my whip.
Until there's red upon your tan,
I will beat you, slave-i-am

Old Guard is so convoluted by myth and misunderstanding, that many new Dominants bandy the phrase about like a magic wand hoping it will get them a fast-track into the lifestyle.

However, I have known people who associate themselves with Gor and Old Guard who are increadibly respectable and knowledgeable about the lifestyle. It is not so much their philosophy, but the people they are that makes them respectable.

LMAO!

I respect people who deserve respect.

I know some who are 'in Gor' or who practice "old guard" means who I greatly respect as the people they are.. and, then I know some who are simply clowns.

It has absoslutely nothing to do with their personal determination.

I say ditto to LuckyAlbatross, Padraig, and IronBear. The label doesn't matter, the person does. It is the person who earns my respect by action, inaction, and other manafestations of honor, integrity, and excellence.

Neither to me, I have my own moral code I follow. Those who are closest to me also follow this code. Is it a group? No. We do not have to define ourselves.
I fear absolutely no one who walks this earth. Never have, why start today?

I do happen to respect my dom a great deal. Though he doesn't fit some label either.

Are there no other choices? Either person molded after a fantasy novel or old gay marine?
By the way those old guard people didn't call themselves old guard either.

We live our lives the best way we see fit to live them. Sometime it isn't by following the flock but by leading the flock.

OscarHargraves -> RE: Which is most feared/respected (11/10/2005 4:46:35 PM)

What IronB said. Respect has to be earned.

crimsontied4u -> RE: Which is most feared/respected (11/10/2005 4:49:42 PM)

When I said "fear" I meant somewhat as it says in the Bible we "should fear God"!
We should fear God for the consequences of our own life, not to fear Him in a scary, afraid of him frame of mind.
If that makes any sense!!

AbstractSavant -> RE: Which is most feared/respected (11/10/2005 5:11:22 PM)

The only thing I fear, is fear itself.

And spiders.

starshineowned -> RE: Which is most feared/respected (11/10/2005 5:18:59 PM)

Greetings..~smiles~

Has to agree with it all depending on the individuals. I am a giver of respect until it is no longer deserved, and not a withholder until it is earned.

Master and I don't put ourselves in any of those cultures but rather take from each that which serves our dynamic, and His goals for us.

Use to have fear of failing Master, and I think (retribution if I'm understanding where your coming from with the bible aspect)..does not anymore.

Sunshine119 -> RE: Which is most feared/respected (11/10/2005 7:17:05 PM)

Wow....here we go again. What ever happened to respecting the paths that each chose for him/herself? While I do not quite understand Gor or Old Guard and practice neither, I have met and respect people who have embraced one or the other for themselves. Likewise, there are many others that practice neither that I respect in this lifestyle.

On the other hand, I have found quite a number of jerks in Gor, Old Guard and in the general BDSM population. Probably more jerks in the latter as I have met more overall. It seems it all comes down to personal integrity.

As far as fear? The person who acts like he/she has more experience and skills than he/she actually does scares me the most. Yup....the pretenders are the ones to fear!

Ahhh...and now what about Bible Belt BDSM?...<i>grimace</i>

This type of fear is not necessarily fear that means being afraid of something (as you said). Rather it is a reverential awe of God; a reverence for His power and glory. However, it is also proper respect for His wrath and anger...not fear as in scared or intimidated by possible outcome of his actions.

<i>of course...there are just as many opinions of this concept as there are of the concept of Old Guard</i>

I don't fear god either. I do work for the homeless pro bono. I live a good life. Providing there is a god why would I fear him?

Fear and Respect are totally different things

The word 'fear' used in that sense always makes me prickly. That's why I don't like that term in reference to others or a basis for any type of relationship.

Fear begets different reactions from people than respect does. Fear response comes from negative expectations and uncertainty while respect comes from positive expectations and trust. Someone who fears you might take any opportunity to bite back. Someone who respects you shouldn't feel the need.
