Has anyone but me noticed that the younger generations seem to have put a permanent label on men older than 35? Not only on CM, but in the real world. The label being loser, at least if you are not pulling down a six figure income. I find it funny because right now, I am better off than my father was at the same age. I have enjoyed my life and see nothing lacking in it, except perhaps my inability to deal with vanilla relationships. I guess it really shouldnt surprise me, considering that any wisdom the older generation may have accumulated over a lifetime is neither wanted or heeded by the younger people today. However, in closing, I would not refer to anyone who has managed to live through 40+ years of back breaking work, has a home without a mortgage, friends, and has managed to do so without losing his sense of ethics.

Just let it all out and when you are done come see me for some tissue. I know that might sound harsh but that is all it is if you think the world has labled anyone you are mistaken. It must be the people you are talking with or at least the ones you are listening too because I am 27 and don't consider anyone over any age a loser reguardless of financial income. Just stop giving those people space in your head and you will find a wealth of people who respect you for you not your age and not your fiscal worth. Steel

Well it has not changed much since when we where younger. I can't recall when I was in my twenties thinking how great people in their forties where. Life goes on..and so do we.

Actually steel, most of the ones that I am referring to are either a) my son, or b) the young women in a support group (therapy group) that seem to have made that assumption. And this is not really a whine, more of a rant. What REALLY amazes me is that after all the insinuations to the effect they consider the older generation losers, they turn around and ask for advice. My son asks for suggestions on trade school, the girls in the therapy group ask the older guys about dating advice, car trouble, just about every thing that is not a specific female related problem. One of my favorite quotes is "If you old guys werent such losers, you would all still be married!" While she is a very attractive 19 year old woman, an almost perfect image of beauty, except for the scar that runs along the side of her head. Her ex boyfriend shot her, and her guardian angels were really working overtime, because the bullet entered her head at the side of her forehead, ran between the scalp and skull and exited without doing any permanent damage. It's the same being a 44 year old woman. No age seems to want that number .. even the old guys would rather have the 21+ age. To that, I say, enjoy the drama bubba!

Jlf. I dont encounter this at all. I am 40 years old and routinely date women in their late teens (18 -19) and early 20's. Most of the guys I know, except for a few who miraculously beat the odds on the divorce thing and as such are still married, are also dating these younger women. This was true elsewhere, but its especially true here in Texas. It seems that the Baptist chicks dont hold to the usual "wanna date the football hero" mentality and they want to date the older men because they are more stable, established, would make better fathers etc. The biggest problem I have with them is that they want to get married - which isnt on my agenda right now as I already slipped that noose off twice ... They certainly dont label me a loser... If they did I dont think they would start showing me bridal magazines and talking about names for hypothetical kids that are not escaping the condom if I have anything to say about it.. LOL Edited to add: Solia as for drama, thats not a function of age. I know 40 year old women who come with waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more drama than some of the younger ones. The 20 year olds generally dont come with the baggage accumulated through the years. They are generally healthy and havent developed hypochondria yet, dont have exhusbands they want to haul to court every six months, dont have the intraoffice politics drama, etc... They just bop through life and their biggest concern in life is whether or not Avril LaVigne is cool or not.... LOL

Ahhh life and the ages. Just be happy with who you are. As my Grandfather use to say, "Respect your age, it is a honor denied to many". Me, I just live life, my wife who is 20 years younger than I am, could care less about my age, it is the person she loves and that has nothing todo with age.

I am a big supporter of therapy and support groups and highly respect anyone who seeks to better and improve themselves by seeking out therapy and support. However, these women do have ISSUES and I would advise not taking what they say about "losers", or about anyone, for that matter, to heart. Once again, I'm implying nothing derogatory about anyone in a support group....only that things they say shouldn't be taken so seriously that they totally mess up your own headspace.

Actually, around here, it is relatively easy to guess the approximate income of anyone in the county. If you live up on lake fort phantom, you probably pull down between 30 and 40k(retirees), whereas if you live on Lytle Lake, you pull down 75 to 100k(new money). Up on ACU hill, the average income is 125 to 200k+(old money.) Now, if you live out in the county proper, Tye residents average 30k (farmers, oil patch, etc,) View Caps averages about 50k before expenses (farmers), Buffalo Gap is around 25k (middle aged country critters,) Steamboat Mountain is about 500k (people who are too dumb to realize that building a 3/4 million dollar home on the top of a mountain with no shelter from cold winter winds is a bad idea,) and the area between 83/84 south to the foot of steamboat mountain averages around 30k (small farmers, working cowhands, construction laborers, etc.) I live in the last area, and I make my living repairing saddles and tack, some antique gun smithing, or commission when someone needs or wants another eye on a livestock buying trip, or being the go to old timer for horse problems. (I am probably so good at figuring out horses because sometimes I can be a real horse's ass.) Oh, I forgot Sayles Blvd.... the REAL old money families, most of the houses on that street were the 'town' houses for the old ranch families in the area.

I usually just laugh at kids who call me a loser... most of them actually have less to look forward to than I ever did... the economic forecast for gen Xers is pretty dismal, really. I don't make much, but what I have is mine. What's more, I enjoy what I do for a living, and may never retire, unless forced to by law... (Luckily, with the graying of America, I doubt if there will be anyone to take my job.) Just relax, jlf. The cute young things often don't have the slightest clue what the real world is like... yet... However, if the real basis of your post is the fact that they don't take you seriously, then I would suggest adopting a persona that more suits this sort of a situation.... that of leather "Daddy."

To the OP, in most cases, a 19 year old is just starting to learn about being a grown up. What do you care what they think of you? I'm 26 and I'm still trying to get the basics down pat.
