My first car was a 1974 Chevy Nova... it was the ugliest shit brown color .. but I bought it for $500 with 39,000 actual miles on it... some little old lady drove it to the store and back... ran great.... Until my second husband * arsehole* but a rod through the motor.....

Now I drive a 97 Ranger... and its a hunk of crap :(

I totally understand your dads desire.. My first was a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with T-Tops. God I loved that car, its name was Melanie.... Wow now youre gonna have me on Ebay Motors....

FangsNfeet -> RE: Your first car? (7/10/2008 8:47:21 PM)

My first car was a 1983 Chevy Caprice station wagon. My uncle gave it to me in 95 when I as a Jr. It had no AC, the window was cracked, and the paint was faded. In other words, my first car was an old piece of junk only capable of getting me from point A to B and back again. The radio and tape player worked pretty darn good.

The best advice my grandfather ever gave me was "Never fill your car with a bunch of guys; only fill it up with girls."

I liked working on it. Oil changes, charging the battery, and using the space for moving bring back some interesting memories.

My first "car" was an 80cc Suzuki trail bike when I was 12.  Got my first CAR car when I was 15 or 16.  It was a 1958 Chevy Biscayne, 283, 4bbl carb and 2 speed hydromatic transmission.  Bought it for $80 from my sister's husband and it needed a new windshield and new motor mounts.  Drove it for years.  Had my first sexual encounter in the front seat while my best friend was having his first in the back seat.  Definitely one of the most dependable cars I've had with many great memories attached.  Wish I still had it!

monywildcat -> RE: Your first car? (7/10/2008 8:51:29 PM)

Oh the memories...

My first car was a Peugot, 1989 I think.  It was burgundy.  I lost the gas cap, and would have had to order it directly from France.  It was awesome.  Me and my little friends loved living dangerously by smoking while in the car and the faint gas fumes.  But hey, the red shop rag I stuffed into the gas tank was the same color as the car!

I loved my second car after it, a 1983 Mazda RX7.  Gold.  Fast.  Two seater.  Still stuffed me and 4 other friends in it to go out.  You know, its amazing that some of us make it to adulthood and beyond!  [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m9.gif[/image]

A 1961 Dodge two-door hardtop. Sun-faded gray with a white top. Bench seats, slant six, three-on-the-tree. Two hundred bucks in 1967.

missjan -> RE: Your first car? (7/10/2008 8:52:11 PM)

First car was a '71 Datsun 510 my folks let me use after the family completely outgrew it.  I knew nothing of mechanical things or maintenance, and simply drove the piss out of it on country roads until it collapsed and died.  All emotional attachment is gone, I wouldn't e interested in another.

The first car I loved, on the other hand was perhaps my tenth.  A 1976 Peugeot diesel.  I'd get another in a heartbeat, if I could.

Mine was a 1970 plymouth fury III  440 V8 and yes I understand the feeling ...part of it is the nostalgia of reliving your youth

at the time as a teenager I was one of very teenage girls with my own car, so quite often at street intersection some young guy(s) would pull up beside in a muscle car (mustangs, camaroes, trans Ams, corvettes etc ) as would start revving their engines and in response I would rev mine as a signal I was ready to challenge to a race to the next redlight intersection...the fury III has a wonderful center of gravity  due to the length  whereas the sportscar where very heavy in the front end being rear drives with engines revving  at the start they would not get the initial momentum their rear tire would spin on the pavement which gave me the lead every time and in the short street races I would beat them as they could make up the timing they lost at the start much to their shock and chagrin, the car also hard extremely good handlling on loose gravel winding roads due to it weight  and I enjoy the challenge of seeing how fast I could push the car and maintain control without sliding around ,,, with this beast I could push 100 mph with todays cars I would have troubles holding the car steady at 50 mph on similiar roads...the other thing I was able to do was get it up on two wheels and it was one of theose cars that just kept going and going and surprisingly  for such a big engine and heavy car it did get pretty good mileage on a tank of gas...my next car was a 77 trans AM 400 4 barrel with 650 holley which spent almost as much time in the garage as it did on the road ..it was a sharp looking car but a money pit but for drving thrills and adrenalin rush I could get  a lot more out of the fury III...um and yeah there  was also  lots of back seat room if you wanted to go parking  and you could sit of lay on the car without denting it

That is kind of suprising, I have a 79 TA now, and man I wouldnt give it up for nothing, its a hard top, 6.6 with the Radial tuned suspension, I have had it up over 160 MPH a couple of times and it rides like a rocket sled on rails. I have had 4 of em, all great cars. This one is by far the nicest, and it is fixing to get a 468 CID heart transplant pretty soon.

The Fury III's were cool cars, but the problem with a car like that is weight, if some one puts the right goodies on thier suspension to make that TA next to you hook up, they are going to leave you every time simply as a function of power to weight ratio. On the other hand, big boat cars do tend to do pretty damn good in accidents, where as TA's well not so good. That is why mine is getting a 12 point cage this winter, allthough I am really hoping I never have to test it.

A Datson 510!!  Was it orange??

I bought my first car with saved money when I was 18.  It was a 1978 Fiat X19, silver & black.  I drove it hard and it was always breaking down.  I unloaded it 10 months later and bought a new Mazda B2000 pick up, charcoal grey.  Mazda was the only dealer who would give an 18 year old a loan without a co-signer (parents did not help or co-sign).  That car lasted me 10 years.

Missokyst -> RE: Your first car? (7/10/2008 9:46:01 PM)

1965, red corvair convertible with a white rag top and white interior.  I used to sneak out and take it for a nightly drive up and down PCH from Long Beach to Tustin, or Long Beach to Sunset.  There was nothing like being free, with the wind blowing in my hair, the music up loud, with the rag top down and very little to stop me.  It had a reputation (thanks ralph nader grrr) for being unsafe at any speed.  But it took corners well, had no problem with speed, and the gas seemed to last for miles.
I loved that car.
Kyst

mine was a 1979 AMC Pacer, royal blue with nifty southwest designed upholstery on the seats.  i drove it until it would only go backwards and then actually sold it for a couple hundred bucks.

[:D] true I got side swiped by a moving van and later a transport hit a moose which then flipped back into the car on the highway ...  the Fury  remained drivable after each incident ... most cars today would have been writeoffs had they suffered the same fate

I know what you mean, I have a 72 Chevy 1 ton dually that is my daily driver, It is a fully rigged out welding truck, has over 800,000 miles on it, and I wouldnt trade it for one of those new pieces of crap they make today for nothing, its just a good ole truck. They just dont make em like that any more.

I actually saw a Moose V. Cavalier, it wasnt pretty, actually it was pretty smelly.

My 79 TA came with a 301 (4.9L) but as is usual with those it cooked and burned up so I swapped it out for a 350 that I had bored over to 383 - you know that little trick of boring it out and putting in the crank from a 400 SB. God I loved that thing - though its amazing it never killed me or any of my passengers. (Although we are still insane, last summer Britt transferred from her friends mustang to my vette at 75 mph going down 45 south... ) The key to accident survivability in a TA is not to have one... Look at a vette, that thing will shatter and send wreckage over 3 miles of highway so dont wreck it! LOL

GreedyTop -> RE: Your first car? (7/10/2008 10:22:48 PM)

67 Fury III.  Lady Margaret.  Stuffing oozing from the back seat. LOVED that car!!  She'd run forever on fumes, unless someone riding in her badmouthed her.
One time, giving a chick I didnt particularly like a ride home (at the request of my best friend), Cindy made comments about how ugly the car was..etc etc...

Lady M decided she'd had enough., and ran out of gas right next to L.A. County Jail.  *snort*

Cindy never said a negative word about Lady M again....

My last great automotive love (4 wheels) was my 1980 Silverado. My father gave her to me.. Blue Betty.  I so seriously abused her when I left CA to move to GA.  She was a 1/2 ton.. I put a cabover camper on her..loaded it with as much of my earthly possesions as I could fit, put a trailer behind her, and drove cross country.  God bless her, she GOT me to GA (although we DID blow 3 right rear tires on the trip.. too much weight) and there was the transmission scare in CLyde, TX...(turned out to be torque bolts, not the entire trans).  It wasnt until about a week after I got to GA that the trans DID fry.  *sob*  I would have replaced the trans, if I'd had the $$.. the engine was in fine shape..
I seriously cried my eyes out as they took her to the salvage yard.. the tow driver put his arm around me, patted my shoulder and said "she's had a good life, darlin/.. time to let her go, now...."

*cries* I miss that truck....
