opposingtwilight -> What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 7:27:18 PM)

I personally choose not to drive a car.

With that said, I do take care of myself. Rather well, in fact. I don't bum rides from friends. I seldom use the dreaded public transportation. I don't miss owning a car. I don't miss paying for insurance or worrying about rising gas prices. Sure, sometimes (very seldom) I think ... Gee, a car would be useful for this ... But generally, I don't need one and don't miss not having one.

There's a thread going on right now talking about D-types who refuse to or simply cannot drive a car ... I didn't want to derail but I gotta wonder, what do people think of s-types in the same situation?

Now, mind you ... When it becomes necessary, I will go out and get my license and get a car. Right now, however, it is not necessary. So, what do you think? Is the lack of a motorvehicle a -gasp- red flag?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I wonder how the hell you are going to be able to run to the store to get x,y, or z for me....

Then again, one can always learn to drive.

It is what it is, I don't make a big deal out of either situation, it may lead me to wonder as to the reasons why.

opposingtwilight -> RE: What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 7:35:38 PM)

I generally use my bike or my two cute little legs when I wanna go get x, y or z for myself.

Being a single girl with no children and not being too lazy to get off my butt and walk is kinda useful sometimes.

Oh and yay, a Gorean actually spoke to me. I thought I was invisible. :)

Leatherist -> RE: What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 7:37:52 PM)

I ride my bike too. I live near enough to work and shopping to do that-and I can hire friends for the occasional trip into seattle. I also save about four hundred bucks a month on insurance, gas and maintanence that I am putting into starting up a small business.

I'm also not seeing what the "red flag" about that is.

opposingtwilight -> RE: What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 7:39:09 PM)

No kidding! I think about all the money I'd have to invest in a car every month and shudder. No thank you. I'll walk for now. Burns calories too!

Vendaval -> RE: What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 7:54:15 PM)

Whether a person uses a car on a regular basis can depend on different circumstances, they may not actually need one and be fine with public transport, bicycles and walking.

Not knowing how to drive can be a problem.  But that is a skill set that most can learn.

coupleowl -> RE: What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 8:50:50 PM)

(She) I don't drive, I don't have a car, I don't know how to drive. I just go when the shopping needs to be done to hold the list.

DomAviator -> RE: What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 8:56:20 PM)

I think with a sub, or anyone living in a major metro area with mass transit its a non issue, HOWEVER, it will still be a major pain in the ass. Liek I mentioned in the other thread, my ex-wife had a license and a car but hated driving in Texas and it was a MAJOR issue that caused innumerable fights because quite bluntly - I was her husband not her fucking errand boy. If I was tired, or had a long day at work, or was just home and comfortable - I wasnt about to go out to run yet another errand for her. You need a pack of cigarettes Laur, well BOO HOO either smoke mine or get you ass in your $30,000 Barvarian Hijackmemobile and go get them yourself. When in a relationship with a non-driver, or a person who simply refuses to drive, it becomes a real pain in the ass to be the chauffer.  it depends where you live but in the Houston Bay Area suburbs you cannot live without a car and a bicycle will get you killed. Bicycle and pedestrian traffic has NO business being on Space Center Blvd, NASA Road 1, or Spencer Highway. If youre not driving you are roadkill. (In many places there arent even sidewalks) There is really no option but to a) drive or b) be a giant pain in the ass. That wouldnt apply in Manhattan obviously but Houston, Dallas, LA, etc are "must drive" citites.

Oh what ever are you talking about, it isnt like anyone here has a decked out F-450 Dually with pipe bumpers and towing mirrors that stick out way past the truck living in the burbs or anything, and besides, aren't bicycles impervious to those? lol

christine1 -> RE: What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 9:09:15 PM)

i don't know that i could give up the freedom that having a car gives me...yes, they can be expensive sometimes but i still would have a hard time being without one.

LOL Yeah exactly... Bicycles and those "Western Hauler" Superduty pickups mix well... Even in the burbs like on Space Center Blvd pedestrians have two choices #1 Walk in the road and find themselves lodged in the grill of some Hummer or other SUV or #2 walk in the weeds on the side of the road and arrive at your desitination with rattlesnakes hanging off your ass and you pants and legs torn to shreds by the brush. There are more than a few people killed every year on Bay Area Blvd, NASA 1, Spencer, Space Center etc because they were walking or riding bikes. If you arent doing 50 on Space Center, youll have a Western Hauler pickup or Hummer in your backseat LOL

Leatherist -> RE: What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 9:19:22 PM)

I've managed nicely in redneck country for the past two years on a bike. Even with those dual freaking dump trucks hauling ass past from the gravel quarries all the time. Most people out here are pretty safe drivers.

Reason I don;t worry too much, is these rednecks are afeared of "bubba the ass rape you in your sleep cellmate".

And manslaughter is a mandatory year in *prison* in this hyar state. [;)]

Uh, just so you know - running over and killing a pedestrian or bicyclist is NOT "manslaughter"...  Depending on the circumstances, they might not even get a ticket for it. A business acquintences daughter hit a person riding a bicycle the wrong way in traffic on NASA 1 in the middle of the night. She recieved NO violations at all for it. Just because someone is on foot or on a bicycle doesnt mean they have the right to be there or are automaticaly going to be declared "not at fault". Quite the contrary.

Nice mister - SA200 pipeliner on the back?

Maya2001 -> RE: What about s-types who don't drive? (7/17/2008 9:38:54 PM)

Well since I have 20 miles to travel to work a car is necessity since there is no buses to get back and forth even if there were buses that went there   the hours they operate on  locally would not fit my work schedule and also if I want to get my dogs to the vet it is a necessity since I cannot take them on public transit and $40 something  a day for taxi is too huge a chunk out of my paycheck, so for me owning and driving a car is a necessity.   When I lived in a larger city  I had no real need for a vehicle even with a child, most places I needed to go including work  was with walking distance or accessible by bus the odd time I took a taxi ...maintaining the cost of a car made no sense..... I did at the time have a valid licence to operate a vehicle.

This should not be about what label one slapsin themselves  whether the  D or s role

but whether or not it is a necessary  expense or affordable expense...take example my son he ended up buying a newer model Dodge Durango on credit  then  borrowed  thousands modifying it for  4x4 off roading  leaving him  unable to afford all his bills...to me that amounts to pure stupidity and irresponsibility.. then he ended up on Sickness and Accident benefits due tio illness which is only about 60% of his regular earnings  which ended up getting himself evicted for non payment of rent, and collectors after him for non payment of bills and here he is still struggling to keep the damn truck he cannot afford... I am sure not going to place value in him just because he owns a vehicle...  I would place far  greater value/respect  in him for learning what priorities are important  and learning to live within his means even if it meant riding a bike instead owning a car

Good for you young lady. If you or anybody can make it without a car or some motor vehicle...that's great.
