Leoben -> Religious beliefs of Collarme members? (7/22/2008 9:03:22 AM)

How would you define your religious beliefs, either by theology, dogma, religion, or spirituality?

I believe that we are more than what we are, that we are God. Using metaphor to describe this tends to be easier for people to understand: we are floating in the stream, and it takes us down by currents, and when we die, we arrive on the shore, and we lose ourselves to the collective identity of God.

If God created existence, then we are part of him in an extremely direct way. We cannot exist without God, then. We are then projections of his imagination and his mind and his will to create the universe.

All of this has happened before and all of it will happen again. - Nietzsche. I believe that the universe repeats itself, without end, the story of existence, over and over, without change or beginning. I believe that the players change, but the story remains the same.

I am not one of those religiously-inclined people who try to justify why their God doesn't stop pain and suffering, or how their scriptures contradict themselves hundreds of times, or how their theology doesn't match observable reality. I have no idea if God, if he exists, even feels emotions like we do, or at all. I also realize that if God exists, and you can define him, then you've got it completely wrong because God by his very nature cannot be defined or quantified by linear, temporal, material thinking. I believe in no set of scriptures nor any theological construct. I simply have beliefs.

So, feel free to share your own.

Hmmm...I believe there is one God, and that He loves all of which He has created. I believe that we are here to teach and to learn, and that sometimes we learn our lessons from most unexpected sources.
I believe there is no "one true path" to God, and that truly, all paths lead to Him.
I believe that as we evolve (individually) that some of us find ourselves on different levels. And that sometimes we devolve. *lol* But that we do learn from it. If not, we get the same lesson over and over.
I believe that "hell" is where we put our minds/souls when we turn away from that which is right. And that it is a spiritual "place" to evolve from.
And that the little voice that whispers (and sometimes yells) is God and/or other kindly spirits leading us.
I believe that the greatest lesson we must learn is love. For others, for God, and for ourselves.

HarryVanWinkle -> RE: Religious beliefs of Collarme members? (7/22/2008 9:14:07 AM)

I am a devout agnostic.  I don't believe in god, but I'm not willing to say that I KNOW there isn't one.  Or a bunch of them.

What bothers me most about religion is the arrogance of "True Believers."  They "know" that their religion, and only their religion is true, that onle those who believe as they do can be "saved" and that everybody who doesn't believe it is damned.

And how do they know this?  Because it's what Mommy and Daddy told them when they were children.  Many of them have grown up enough to realize that Mommy and Daddy were absolutely full of shit about everything else, but they jus KNOW they were dead on right on this subject.

Welcome to CM Leoben!
Well, an interesting post, but be prepared for it to degenerate.  Religion threads usually do.[;)]

I pretty much agree that I am god.  I disagree that the universe is on a perpetual repeat.  I do not believe that ones spiritual path or religous belief is for public consumption but a personal relationship.

I've long since given up on what I think the purpose to existence is, but if we are here to learn, what's the point? What could we learn ourselves we couldn't learn from God?

I actually do believe what you said in your second-to-the-last sentence. I believe love is what makes us human, and without it, life isn't worth living. If we have never felt deep, true love for another human being, then we are no different from animals and machines.

You live, you die and in between you try and be a morally and ethically upright person, doing no harm to others, and bringing joy where you can. I do not need religious dogma and commandments and books penned by mortals talking of a sky god to assist me in being that person.

You sound to me more like an atheist, but your choice in labels is your own.

I am very bothered by such people, also. I was born evangelical Lutheran, and raised Mormon (quite the religious cocktail) and around age eleven I just realized Mormonism is a load of crap.

People who are so arrogant as to think they know everything and they know what God thinks (should he exist) tell me one thing: they're terribly, at least on a subconscious level, insecure about themselves. They need to hate other people (I daresay finding joy in the eternal damnation of others, by throwing it in their faces constantly, is hate) to avoid hating themselves. They probably have poor self-esteem but they learn to adopt an arrogant, self-absorbed attitude from their pastor or priest.

I have serious problems with showing people respect when they are incapable of self-analysis, self-criticism, and at least considering inimical schools of thought, be it economics, politics, history, culture, religion, etc.

My grandmother once admitted to me the fact that if she were raised as a Muslim, she'd probably believe in it, just as her being raised into evangelical Lutheranism led her to embrace it. She even, on more than one occasion, admitted to me she "never really read the Bible." I didn't even bother trying to explain to her that she can't possibly be a Christian if she doesn't even understand the religion itself because people like her who are so engrained in a theology like that are incapable of independent thought.

It's really sad sometimes.

It won't degenerate if people behave like adults.

I have never felt that two people need to share the same religious opinions. People need their own opinions to find true happiness in this world. It's easier to read some archaic book, follow all kinds of silly, meaningless rituals, and stop thinking, than it is to actually live your life and come to conclusions on your own.

Aynne -> RE: Religious beliefs of Collarme members? (7/22/2008 9:34:30 AM)

Thank you darling, I do try. I come from a religious childhood, and catholic school, and I chose to not continue that into my adult years. I really don't have an issue with others beliefs, but please, spare me from the jesus crispies crowd trying to convert me.[;)]

Jesus Crispies.... you know, the one's that chase you down with pamplets telling you you'll burn in firey doom, and then grope up your daughter a minute later?

Ah those... yeah, I know who they are. But why are they called 'crispies'?

fungasm -> RE: Religious beliefs of Collarme members? (7/22/2008 9:39:20 AM)

I am a non-Christian Quaker.  I believe there is something sacred and divine beyond what we can understand that if it was the creator of this thing we call our existence, is definitely a part of the fabric.  I believe we have a moral obligation to live in such a way that we do not consume more than our fair share, and we give back more than we take.

And I LOVE Aynne's answer.

Those aren't really exclusively religious though, but there are UFO cults, most mainstream organized religions incorporate the concept of spirits, and the supernatural/paranormal can be religious when used in context. So, how would you put them in a religious context?
