I don't know about training someone to sit in a corner. You either know or don't know how to sit in a corner.

Corner time, on the other hand, could be nice (in a i get to stop and think) or really hot (because of the act of taking controle of my out of place behaviour.)

Cleaning the bathroom with a toothbrush and small sponge works better.

Why do some people persist on sticking the word "training" behind every unremarkable action? Are those actions somehow going to be more deep, mysterious, ritual or special because of it?

Blah...I'm gonna get some sleep training after my toothbrush training and sex training. Ooooh I'm so "twue lifestyle" now

A lot of people take it that way.  I don't.  I'm no more special for receiving "on the job" training than I am for receiving "computer program training" than I am for receiving "xyz training" from my Master.  Not sure why the word elicits such an emotional reaction in others, but I see that a lot.

Owned I agree- being put in the corner and being taught to self reflect is great, whether it's in a corner or in a hot tub.

I believe that one of the greatest gifts that one can give themself is the time to self reflect. The ability and willingness to do so is also one of the greatest gifts you can give your partner(s). How can you express yourself and communicate well unless you first understand yourself?

I usually reserve the title "training" to refer to "how to..." It's a habit I formed from reading a great many dog training books.

Potty training is how to (in this case, where) potty.
Clicker training is how to click (to reward behavior).
Defense training is how to defend.
Obedience training is how to be obedient.

What was called corner training here would be a method to accomplish something bigger, like obedience training.

Many people spoke of the limited or positive effects of corner time. (Waste of time/self reflection). What about the negative affects? Does the guilt of being "put in the corner" serve a purpose?

Corner time and guilt are unrelated in my case. I have realized no negative effects for being put in a corner for a given period of time. When my Master puts me in a situation, he trusts I will do the best I can with it.

I'm not talking about negative affects on the mental health of the submissive. I mean something more in line with "The affect of undesirable stimuli." The affect of being punished, but not the punishment.

If you're put in the corner to establish dominance, I see how its foolish, compared to so many other ways.
If you're put in the corner along with the statement "You've failed me. Sit in the corner and think of what you've done." it's something else.

Now remove the words "You've failed me." It's still the same reason for being in the corner - its a punishment.

From people who thought that corner time was a waste, when it is used as a punishment, is it more effective?

Oh. In my case it has not been used as punishment or a result of failure, which is why I didn't understand where this guilt was coming from that you had mentioned.

There are several reasons why I don't think corner is effective for me
  • If I messed up I need a conversation with you about it, not a conversation with myself. I don't brat about, if I mess up its because I genuinely didn't know how to do better.
  • If I forgot my place, my headspace .. if I was suffering from a recto-cranial inversion ... then something has caused that, something is going on for me that needs to be worked through.

The two above refer to CORRECTION ... i.e. I have messed up and we don't want me messing up in the future. If we are talking about punishment .. or Him getting his revenge for me messing up (because ultimately ... exacting retribution) then something tells me corner time wont do that for Him either

If I am being stuck in the corner ... for anything constructive and useful to come from it ... He kinda has to be in the corner with me ...

Exactly.

Do you really need to be trained on how to stand in the corner? I think "corner training" is a made up thing and a waste of time. That doesn't mean that I think "corner time" is a waste of time, it just means that the subject of "corner training" is.

Don't get me wrong, my panties aren't in a twist about this word. I just find it silly in some of the contexts it is used. I do see a difference in being trained at work for some job or task unknown to the trainee and being "trained" in something you know perfectly well how to do such as standing in a corner. To say that someone need some sort of a training to stand in a corner, sit on a sofa, put something up their ass or mouth or kneel is interpreted by my "silly gland" as that person is an imbecile. I know that isn't the truth but it does sound that way to me, just like many other (mostly online) "protocols" and "lifestyle rituals"

Just my take on it, but I do know people have every right to be silly all the way without my blessing as I too can bare my own sillyness for others to see.

Hi Viridana,

Thanks for responding. I understand now (I think!) it's not the word "training" that elicited your reaction but the idea of being trained to be in a corner. Having said that, I can understand your perspective on this. :)

That said, when I saw "corner training" I thought along the lines of putting someone in a corner as a discipline to train them in other areas. Like "crate training" for a dog - you're not teaching a dog to sit in a crate; the dog certainly knows how to sit in a crate - you're teaching the dog to find peace in the crate, and to be secure in the crate. While I have never actually heard of "corner training," I put it along those same lines.

Again, I appreciate your explanation.

But the concept of "corner training" blech.

I'm unclear regarding the distinction you are making. Is it that you like the idea but consider it a stupid phrase, sounding as it does like it comes from the Guidebook for Twue Dominates?
