Meanwhile, John McCain is giving an electrifying speech in front of a cheese display somewhere in "flyover" country, about how he wasn't at all wrong about Iraq's "Awakening" movement haveing started after the surge, when in fact it had begun almost a year before... See, there was this "secret surge" that was going on for a year before the public surge took place...

There was a crowd of electrified... dozens.

Oh, and his boss, George Bush? He got caught telling the truth about what's been causing our economic troubles, on a camera phone... OMG, he told the truth when a lie could have done just as well! What's the world coming to? (He said it was because Wall Street was drunk... i.e. it went nuts because of the lack of lending regulation.)

(Once again, a republican learns the hard way about consumer video tech, and this funky thing called "youtube." [It must be named after one of those "series of tubes" that make up the internet thingy...]  )

Read the text.  The text isnt as apiring as the delivery.

Obama could do a blog from a podium and people would cheer clap and faint.

I guess the "Old Europe" comment is still fresh [from Bush]

I watched it live.. it was a good reception by what was covered on television.

Deutsch Welle added some interesting background to the coverage...

One of the many stories... http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,2144,3507071,00.html

quote:

But not everyone, of course, is euphoric about the conditions under which Obama will appear in Berlin.
Those wishing to attend have been advised that signs and posters will be prohibited at the speech -- a move that has come in for criticism particularly from the left. There has been speculation that the Obama camps wants to avoid pictures of Germans making anti-American statements that could hurt the candidate back home.

quote:

Moreover, some residents of Germany's perennially cash-strapped capital have taken umbrage at the fact that Obama's visit will cost a half-million euros ($786,000) -- half of which will be born by German public funds.
"How come the German and the Berlin taxpayer has to pony up 250,000 euros so that Obama gets a nice television backdrop for his campaign?" asked one irritated blogger on the website of a local newspaper.

The speech was well received by the crowd in Berlin.  No doubt there will be plenty of analysis in the following weeks from political talk shows and bloggers.

Don't know, but he was getting hammered for not going abroad, I think it'll be a no-win type of thing.

Poor McCain.  When he suggested that Obama go overseas, this was NOT what he was expecting.

Curious that Obama's lost a little ground to him in the polls meanwhile, according to CNN.

Yeah, too bad he's not running for President of Germany.  I really don't give a damn what the Germans think of our presidential race.  Obama hasn't convinced me of anything, and he hasn't convinced a lot of Americans.  It seems to me like he should be here not in Germany acting like he's already won.

I completely agree with you about who the image was aimed at.  The news media (including Fox) has been comparing and contrasting today's speech to the Kennedy and Reagan speeches.  I am glad there was some sort of control put in place on where he was able to hold the event, I can only imagine what kind of use of images of him with Brandenburg Gate behind him would have played later in the campaign.

Mike, do you think he's going to gain experience in foreign affairs by visiting overseas for a month?  Let's not forget that he's doing this on mine and your dime.  Obama isn't impressing me with this, and I don't think most Americans care about his little speech in Germany.

Actually his campaign paid for the Germany leg of the tour.

Mike are you kidding me?  He is campaigning.  He's not in serious negotiations with heads of state.  He's taking photo op tours and being wined and dined just in case he wins.  It's only 3 months to go, and he still hasn't laid out any definitive plans to accomplish any of the crap that he's spewing.

Well. certainly the McCain camp goaded him into the trip, hoping that he would embarass himself. (After all, look at how "W" made an ass of himself every time he's made a trip overseas. It was kinda funny how Germany's leader seemed so relieved that Obama wasn't going to try and give her a massage, like "Curious George" did...) Unfortunately for the GOP's sinister Master Plan, Obama's actually intelligent, nuanced, and articulate... i.e. everything their guy has never been. The gross miscalculation on their part was not realizing that, after the last 8 years, all Obama has to do to win over Europe is say, "Ich bein nein George Busher."

Oh, and my mistake about McCain... the cheese cooler was yesterday... actually, while Obama was talking inpirationally to 200,000+ europeans, starting a repair of the rift that "Bad King George" rent in our relations, McCain was ordering creampuffs at "Schmidt's German Sausage, Fudge and Waffle Haus." (Makes you wonder if in a background of the shot, we wouldn't see George getting her reaping assignments from her boss on little yellow sticky notes.)

Again, it just makes me wonder... who the hell is setting up McCain's photo ops? The green screen, in front of a closed, boarded up factory, a cheese cooler, and now a "family style german themed waffle dive. Honestly, who could set up such pathetic presentations of a candidate? Broadway Danny Rose?
