A Workout Instead of Meeting U.S. Troops? Bad Move, Senator Obama.

More like....tacky.

U.S troops and military installations are not campaign set pieces.  Blowing off visiting with the troops he hopes to command because he can't make it a photo op....strange way to support the men and women in uniform.

housesub4you -> RE: A Workout Instead of Meeting U.S. Troops? (7/25/2008 7:55:18 AM)

Well it's better than using the the same troops for photo ops because if you can't control the crowd everyone Boo's at you.

You're not going to say Bush had all those photos with the troops because he cared about them are you??

1 - Bush is past tense.  He's not running for office.
2 - Presidents visit troops.  Of course it's a photo op.  It's also SOP for a Commander-In-Chief.  Obama is not  the Commander-In-Chief (not yet, and hopefully not ever).
3 - Blowing the troops off because the media circus has to be left behind is worse.  It's tantamount to saying that the troops are valued/respected/esteemed only to the extent they further Obama's political ambitions.  If that is how Obama views men and women in uniform he does not need to be their Commander-In-Chief.

So flying onto an aircraft carrier and standing in front of a Mission Accomplished sign worked for you

Well at least you got the part about Bush correct, that's something

There’s not a dimes worth of difference between anyone at that level of politics, or industry for that matter. With the exception of a chosen few the hierarchy of the left perceives a population of serfs and the right sees a crowd of indigent servants…end result, you’re screwed.

Yeah, it did.  Of course it was theater.  Of course it was a photo op.  It was also an "ooh-rah" moment for the troops--moments like that are morale boosters.

Just like Bush showing up in Iraq for turkey day.  Photo op?  You bet your bippy.

Morale matters.

camille65 -> RE: A Workout Instead of Meeting U.S. Troops? (7/25/2008 8:56:12 AM)

From the bottom half of that article:

UPDATE: A very interesting email from a source I must protect suggests that Obama's visit to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center had the green light until a campaign staffer raised a stink about going with Obama. (There are rules meant to ensure candidates do not use soldiers or military bases for campaign purposes, and they state that personal and committee staff may accompany a sitting senator on a visit but campaign staff may not.) I am told that when one of Obama's campaign staff was told he or she would be denied access, the visit was canceled.

Morale matters?

How about the sailors who had to steam in circles for an extra two days after a lengthy tour,just so Bush could get his cod-piece photo opp.

How do you think the sailors felt, when Bush slimmed them by claiming that they made and hung the"Mission Accomplished" banner,after being caught lying about it?

Morale matters?

How about stranding our GIs in the middle of Arabia with no mission,no leadership and no exit plan?

And how does this improve morale?

<snipped>

In a videoconference with U.S. military and civilian personnel in Afghanistan on Thursday, President Bush said this of the ongoing war there:

"I must say, I'm a little envious," Bush said. "If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed."
"It must be exciting for you ... in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You're really making history, and thanks," Bush said.

So there you have it: We've finally obtained empirical evidence proving that President Bush has absolutely no idea what war is all about.  A Commander-in-Chief with such a child-like view of combat is in no way fit to lead America's Armed Forces during a time of conflict.  Most of us in the military have known the President was clueless on military matters, but I don't think many of us could have foreseen his statement that "confronting danger" in Afghanistan is "in some ways romantic."

Having served in eastern Afghanistan myself, I can assure you that there is nothing romantic about being decisively engaged with Taliban and al Qaeda elements for 15 months at a time.  It's a shame President Bush didn't also feel that Vietnam "would be a fantastic experience," because if he'd chosen not to avoid service during that conflict--or if he'd even read a book about war--he would likely not think to publicly describe the war in Afghanistan as "exciting."

~~~~~~~~~~~
Bush has zero clue about morale.
You`re just sniping at Mr.Obama.
Sarkozy loves Bush.
Most French like America(and Americans) and certainly don`t hate us more than anyone else.
They don`t like our leadership,which is fair.
They also tried to give us a heads-up and warned us against getting involved w/ Iraq.
And we pissed on their good will attept.They are very gracious to still talk civilly with us.Thank god the were/are at least some adults, in leadership positions.
I was reading up on this. They would not let the press in. He was told he could go in. He couldn't get a photo op....I hope it opens the eyes of some Obama supporters.
Highly doubtful because it won't make mainstream news.  Obama supporters are cultists.  It's one thing to have done your research on a candidate and support them.  Its another to just follow the crowd blind.
True, McCain's supporters aren't known for assuming that Barack Obama is a Muslim because of his name, or that his wife is a radical because she is black, or that he was sworn in on The Qur'an. They're all so educated on the issues! It's very clear that people following the crowd only applies to the Democratic party!
McCain 2008!
sub4hire -> RE: A Workout Instead of Meeting U.S. Troops? (7/25/2008 12:24:09 PM)
Exactly.  Those who have done their research don't feel that way.  It only goes to show a person how little a person in this country does to change the country in a better way.  Rather than sit back and follow the crowd.
Then complains later on that the country has gone to hell.
That's about it. ALL military and political 'leaders' in history do all they need to rally the troops but also in ANY cause for example conquering, taking and so incompetantly pursuing a war (over for 4 years now...we are stuck cleaning up OUR mess) cooked up about Iraq being this super threat.
Bush and Hitler used the same paragraph of words as each declared a 'war on terrror' that didn't exist. This was to provoke fear and establish allegience as the only acceptable partiotism. These were also the steps taken to create the basis for Hitler's nazi fascism that followed.
'Mission Accomplished' and the rest is a hollow and false bravado.
DomKen -> RE: A Workout Instead of Meeting U.S. Troops? (7/25/2008 1:18:12 PM)
NRO? You're using NRO as a source? What didn't the Birch society newsletter carry the story?
As to your claim, if Obama had only a few hours in Berlin free then the visit to Rammstein would have been very short considering the need to travel from Berlin to there. The two bases are huge and have an enormous number of troops stationed on them. A 15 minute or half hour visit with all the attendant disruptions would likely annoy far more troops than he would actually get to see or speak to. In particular the Secret Service would have likely not allowed landings or takeoffs while Obama was on or near the field. Which would have been a very bad thing if it meant a medevac flight from Iraq was diverted or forced to circle and a soldier died.
As to the claimed email with a very strange claim, Obama and staff have been visiting military bases for quite some time and for this to be the first some campaign staffer heard of the restriction is farcical and obviously made up. It's actually disturbing how few people actually applied their critical thinking skills to this BS.
For a guy now living in Turkey by choice Geraghty sure seems interested in US politics. Maybe instead of taking potshots from afar he should try coming home and working to improve the country if such a thing is possible for a NR contributor.
Vendaval -> RE: A Workout Instead of Meeting U.S. Troops? (7/25/2008 1:37:56 PM)
I was watching the evening news on NBC last night and this subject was discussed.  The Pentagon advised Senator Obama to not visit the base on this trip.  The interviews from yesterday are on this page.
