oo the Dominate one drives me crazy.... But then again I'm not one to talk about grammar. I'm a scientist who cares if there is a period or an apostrophe or even capitalization :P Actually that's not entirely true. I've learned to be better since working on academic articles, but most of the time I'm horrible.

I always trip over the "ie" or "ei", because that stupid " i before e " doesn't always work.
And, I can never figure out whether it's "Affect" or "Effect"
I'm sooo confused  o.O

I second guess myself all the time. When I am writing or speaking I will use a word then wonder if I used it correctly or I will wonder if I spelled something correctly. Often it may be very simple words that will look incorrect to me when they are fine. Go figure? This is after I majored in Technical Writing and at the time I was the go to person when it came to spelling or grammer. Twelve years later and I don't know my its from my it's.

It's always nice to be the go to person for spelling and GRAMMAR isn't it?

Two hints from a grammar nerd:  First, there's more to the i/e rule.

I before E
except after C
Or sounding as A
as in "neighbor" or "weigh"

Of course that doesn't help for weird, so I usually get that wrong.

And if you go with "affect" for the verb and "effect" for the noun, you'll usually get it right. (There are exceptions, just like weird. Pesky irritants.) The Grammar Girl has a cute cartoon. http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/affect-versus-effect.aspx

Hello,

I hate when people correct other people's grammatical mistakes... If you know what someone is saying, it's just plain bull shit rude to correct them.  I don't walk around correcting people's speech... "so, waddya gonna do tanight?"  I don't say "correct pronunciation is:  so, what are you going to do tonight"  Get the fuck off your high horse I say...

And besides, we all know,
I am sunshine and I am THE grammar goddess... behold the proof:

Okay, I get riled up when "lie" and "lay" get misused. All the time, it seems.

Lie is intransitive. It is not a verb that acts on some object.
Lay is transitive. It does act on an object.

So you LIE down.
And you LAY somebody.

Isn't it obvious? Happy to help.

aww I lubs you too girlie.....

but back to the topic at hand... I will admit that in life in general I had a boss who said "it breaks up the monopoly of the day" and I just never respected him again... sigh...

As for CM, the "dominant/dominate" thing does irritate me but hey, I know that one is being used as a noun (after having been altered from an adjective), one as a verb... Read from context - it's what I tell all my students ...and if they can get it (despite Arabic, Japanese, Tagalog, or Korean being their first language - all of which have completely different alphabets), we all can deal with it...

piece and pashmina,
sunshine

I had a coworker who always said the word "reinterate" instead of reiterate. We used to laugh every time he said it, which was often.

Okay, *puts on the grammar goddess hat... It's not so much that lie and lay are an issue
(We lie down to lie to our therapists).  The problem is in the past and the past participle forms.

Lie - to recline
I lie on the couch.
I lay on the couch last night.
I have lain on the couch in the past.

Lay - to put or place
The hen lay an egg.
The hen laid an egg yesterday.
The hen has laid eggs in the past.

THE PAST OF LIE IS LAY

This is the problem...
*********************************
As for farther and further:
It USED TO BE that farther was for physical distance
(Don't drive any farther.)

and further was for conceptual distance or metaphor...
(It couldn't be further from the truth).

Now, however, they are used in basically the same way.  Don't sweat that one.

Now I'm going to go lie in my bed  which is father from the clock that I lay on the desk but I will get further in my REM cycle with it set thusly.

Oh god, I am such a geek.
yeah, night,
sunshines
