I know it was "only" a 5.8, but that is more than powerful enough to do damage if conditions are right. And it's always disconcerting to feel the solid ground move. I remember as a kid watching light fixtures pop off the walls and furniture "walk" across the floor in a big quake. Let's all be happy it was just a fleeting tremor.

50-60 miles away from chino hills...........try 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT WAS INSANE. Thankfully nothing broke or fell in our house, but cell service sucks right now!

The trunk lines get flooded when this happens. Send emails or IM - they most likely can't get dial tone, either, but their internet connections are probably still up.

everhope -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:15:35 PM)

my cell is dead...landline working fine...that is puzzling.

Shadow-tiger -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:17:12 PM)

Bah, shows whay I know. No damned tv over here for a long time. [:@]
Went next door to see the news, apparently cels are down. Mine is too.

Oy Greedy, is there anyone besides me who hasn't come visited you by now?!

Road trip dude, I have room in the car. And a blender to make frozen concoctions. But we have to stop at Carlsbad caverns to see the bats.

Shadow-tiger -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:18:17 PM)

Ooh, I haven't been to Carlsbad in YEARS! I'm in!

everhope -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:19:20 PM)

road trip to Florida...i would love it! promise to keep the blender whirring from the back seat.

Two different systems that work differently. If cell bandwidth is oversubscribed, you get nothing. And the land lines have a ton more carrying capacity than cell. I keep a land line just for emergencies (and internet access, of course).

Shadow-tiger -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:21:09 PM)

Maybe I should get the land yacht running again. That would be the perfect beast to drag lots of people cross country, even if it's not a caddy.

snappykappy -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:21:48 PM)

5.8 in chino hills 7.7 miles deep and they also felt it in las vegas

Strongmindbody -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:24:20 PM)

Las Vegas! It was a good, long quake. I'm not surprised, but still...

Shadow-tiger -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:24:22 PM)

Huh, just got down rated to a 5.4 at a depth of 8.5 miles. Yeesh!

everhope -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:29:15 PM)

i had planned on going out and about today....nope. not now.

What kinda Land Yacht?

I have an AC outlet in the car to run the blender, so that's a plus. And if Everhope goes, we could drop down to the Saguaro National Park to try out cactus bondage.

purepleasure -> RE: omg...a bigggggg one (7/29/2008 12:32:58 PM)

i guess the friggin' snow isn't so bad after all.  no hurricanes or earthquakes here.
