I don't know why they haven't taken this a step further and initiated home delivery service for groceries. How about chauffeur driven town cars? Obviously these people are disadvantaged. They've failed at providing their families with healthy food. The tread is to reward failure in this country, especially in CA and LA in particular.

There should be $5/burger, $1/fry, $3/taco; tax at the fast food places to pay for chauffeur/delivery service program. It may end up closing the fast food places, but big business deserves it because it's their fault these people make bad food choices in the first place. Besides isn't this the acceptable formula for liberal ecconomics:
Business failure = good; Individual failure = bad = Initiating more nanny government buracratic intervention.)

No delivery?

How tacky.....

servantforuse -> RE: South Los Angeles banning new fast food outlets (7/30/2008 11:12:07 AM)

It never ends. I guess the gang and drug problem in LA must have been taken care of..This is the nanny culture gone crazy. In Chicago the city elders banned restaurants from serving fau grau...

NeedToUseYou -> RE: South Los Angeles banning new fast food outlets (7/30/2008 11:48:48 AM)

It's simple economics that a government ban will not change.

I have 5.00 dollars, that will buy me a crap combo meal that will keep my stomach from growling for 8 hours and some change left over.

Versus...

I have 5.00 dollars, that will be me a healthy meal, with the addition of another 2.00 which I don't have.

Simple math. Banning something that fits into the economic conditions, will not change the economic conditions. Healthy food isn't going to become cheaper do to less fast food places. They aren't dependent upon each other in regards to determining affordability.

If someone can explain how banning fast food restaurants makes the community have more money, then it could work, but until the community has more money, they can only afford cheap food, even if you build healthy food joints those that don't have the money for the better food will still eat the crap food, because that is what they can afford.

And since we are talking about poor areas, if california's welfare system works like Illinois, then the number one thing you can do to slim down the poor would be to ban soda, potato chip, and candy purchases with the link card(Illinois version of food stamps), I swear a full 80% of the time I see a link card it is buying a Mountain dew or Hershey's bar and it is always in the hand of some Fat bloated heffer, or a anorexic Meth Head, maybe the responsible ones just having bad luck use it at the grocery store, but I see the link card at convenience stores more than any other place, and that is what I see it used for.

Maybe if the only thing you could purchase with a link card were healthy groceries then that would change the grocery store equation in poor areas. As is the link card is more of a Pepisco / Coca-Cola / Fritos / Nestles  grant program than a means to provide healthy food to poor people.

That got repealed back in the spring.

Another criticism of many inner city areas is that liquor stores are more common than grocery stores.  But is banning liquor stores a good solution, or is it better to have business incentives for grocery stores, or a apply both tactics at once?

This is a pretty complicated issue.

A little mom & pop grocery is going to have a lot of trouble keeping prices affordable so we're mostly talking about chain supermarkets. Acquiring enough contiguous property for the market and parking lot, many municipalities require so many parking spaces for markets to cut down on street parking problems, in a densely built area can be cost prohibitive. If you build there needs to be a perception of safety to the surrounding area to get enough people to travel to the market so the market will be profitable. Then there comes an issue of transferring existing experienced managerial staff into an 'undesirable' area.

When I lived in Hyde Park, south side of chicago, I went to several meeting where a big chain met with the public and city officials about building a new supermarket in the area and all those issues came up. I know Wal-Mart was more recently looking at building in the area and had the same problems.

pahunkboy -> RE: South Los Angeles banning new fast food outlets (7/30/2008 1:23:44 PM)

Now that you mention it- I noticed this first in my small town area.  We have chain restaruants that much of it is microwaved- precooked food.   I thought= well it is this nothing area. So i enjoy trips to Chicago where I can get real gyros- good pizza and FOOD.  But in the past while- I noticed a decline.  Food once tasted excellent in the southwest suburbs.  But it must be a phaze- it is the same slop you can get everywhere.

What about all you can eat troffs?   I see busses stop with obese people- tho all the patrons act like they will NEVER eat again. Taking huge servings of everything.... some of it laying on the floor.  Back up they go for more... eat and eat eat.  You may never get a chance again. Besides you paid for "all you can eat"....

I think the ban is a bad idea.  But just maybe the fast food places will come up with quality food- but ya know people "like" slop. People love to graze at the all you can eat buffet troffs.

Aside from that you have to be a chemist to eat properly in 2008.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: South Los Angeles banning new fast food outlets (7/30/2008 1:29:59 PM)

If I remember correctly, didn't Wal-Mart try to open up a Supercenter in a poor area of Los Angeles?  I seem to remember the powers that be raising hell about the evil Wal-Mart corporation opening a store there.

Vendaval -> RE: South Los Angeles banning new fast food outlets (7/30/2008 1:34:30 PM)

Yup, "feeding trough" is what I call those types of restaurants too.  If you have a large family with a bunch of youngsters they can be a bargain.  But so many people that are already heavy or obese binge at those places.

I have heard the same problems discussed regarding larger grocery stores opening in the poorer parts of Los Angeles.  Some of my friends live in a nicer part of South LA but the grocery store in that area has increased security to cut down on the shop lifting.  There were addicts hanging around outside during the day and I definately would not want to be shopping there at night alone.

Raechard -> RE: South Los Angeles banning new fast food outlets (7/30/2008 1:38:15 PM)

In the UK city planners use the following formula when working out the centres between bollards in front of a fast food chain:

C=G-750

where

C = The centre of the bollards in millimetres, G is the Gut diameter of an average fat bloke and 750 is ermm 750.

It's worked for generations why change it now[8|]

Daddystouch -> RE: South Los Angeles banning new fast food outlets (7/30/2008 1:49:32 PM)

Poor people are eating at fast food places. The argument seems to be that they do so because they can't afford to eat elsewhere.

So the government bans fast food places. The poor people still can't afford to eat elsewhere, so they starve. What a well thought out policy that is [8|]

So what if they can afford to eat more healthily right now and they eat unhealthily for some other reason? Maybe they prefer fast food? Well banning fast food only makes their lives worse. Maybe they don't have time to eat elsewhere? Banning fast food makes them late for work so they get fired, become unemployed and thus even poorer, or spend less time with their kids who, as a result, have a deprived childhood and create more problems down the road.

Bollards are anti car devices that are also designed to give drunk men playing, that childhood game, leapfrog a painful experience[8|]

So DT, this leads to "If fast food is baned from poor neighborhoods, only rich people will eat hamburgers!"? You're right! This akin to the LA policy makers saying "LET THEM EAT TOFU!"?

Next think you know, there'll be dealers riding around in their Hummers blasting the Burger Kind and McDonald's theme from boom boxes, using their wheel spinners as fans to circulate the aroma of a Big Mac and selling them for twice the price that rich people can buy them in their neighborhoods.
