Faery, I don't know that I would say security is shit, just that there is still some trust here and not quite the insanity that is in the States. I've seen border crossings where it was casual (my last one was "got anything to declare, any alcohol, cigarettes, weapons? No? Ok, welcome to Canada!" and not a single thing else) to paranoid where they went through everything I had with me. And questioned me for 30 minutes because the official didn't like my first name.

There's differences but trust me - I can't get some antiques here simply because they are weapons and I've had them for years. Or should I say that I can't get them here legally? [:)] Shoot, for that matter, I have kitchen knives I can't get here legally...

Crimes like this go un noticed by the anti gun crowd here. It always seems to me that they are anti gun and not anti crime. Another armed passenger could have saved this passenger...

If you dont have a ticket in the UK, you just get a fine. [;)]

Yes and a stray bullet could have killed another. What is with the gun crowd and their belief that all bullets come with guarantees to hit their mark

See I just didn't read that thread I am sure this would have made more sense if I had.

Thank God.  I'll take my NJ survival instincts any day.

Yes I too would aspire to a New Jersey petro -chemical capitol of the world point of view, rather than an European  century's old culture point of view...yup

Wow...Europe's got the brightest minds,  no violence, the wittiest wit and no pollution to boot.   I must move there pronto.
Actually...the majority of NJ is farmland (thus the name Garden State) and quite lovely.  It's sad that so many only look at what they see at the airport.

Having another passenger armed is one solution yet you fail to understand that the overall mentality of Canadians are of the mindset that "it ain't my business so I ain't getting involved."  It's this attitude of indifference and this is quite evident in  any of our major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton etc. Unfortunately the days of strangers helping strangers is far and few between. The way society's attitudes have changed over the years has done much to contribute to this attitude of "not my problem" BS.

kittinSol -> RE: Sleeping man decapitated on Greyhound Bus (7/31/2008 3:21:45 PM)

A base instinct for survival doesn't exclude intellectual insight: this charming trait, to be both a beast in the wild and a library rat, is part of what makes us human :-) .

...and the alternative? Societal paranoia, which is also not a good thing. Trust is not the problem, a little more trust in the world would be a good thing. You still wont get perfect security, thats impossible, but you will get far less of the low grade abuse that inevitably follows the absence of trust.

You're safe...she's anti gun.
I'm too tired to debate my lack of ability in picking apart messages for their hidden meanings on these boards lately.

Actually, New Jersey doesn't even rank in the US 100 top polluters, according to Scorecard.org.

And if you're looking at top World polluters, look to the east, at China, according to BBC News, just a few months ago.

I'm just sayin', if you're gonna criticize, know what you're talkin' about.  [;)]

I think we need more laws restricting guns in the States..

See, you make a joke - whether it's funny or not is pretty irrelevant - and people take it literally. There's no hope for irony around here, there really isn't [:D] .

I was laughing so loud my co-worker checked up on me. Life is too short to take everything so seriously.
