ah, well, I emailed him and he is on Faculty......but would prefer not to use University-monitored machines as he wasy saying there was a Professor of Anthropology who was recently done for "accessing porn" when in fact this
guy's subject area is Tongan sexuality. It is a bit lazy though, though I guess
there might be a pool of knowledge here that might make searching further much easier.....have you come across any academic stuff in the US ?

Quite odd since even back when I was a professor in the 80's and in the deep south, we had unmonitored computer searches. I wasn't aware New Zealand was so backward and oppressive.

At least that's what I've heard about the country from credible sources.

Did he give you the guy's name. I'd like to drop him a line of support and let him know about some international academic resources that are available when the sort of censorship appears. Mostly they work these days in Islamic and totalitarian countries. After all if he's been attacked, it's hardly an invasion of privacy anymore.

Hey John, I can't help but ask where you taught in the south. Being from Georgia, I'm trying to think of what institution in the south would allow cutting edge attitudes concerning human sexuality.

Hi
Presuming you were at the University of Otago. Well, since those halcyon times, the administration and management of Universities has changed immeasurably. Unis are now run to management models far more than academic ones, and managers have the ascendency not academics. Email and internet usage is closely monitored but in practice you have to draw attention to yourself to trigger alarms. That not withstanding, the Professor referred to above was bought down on disciplinary charges. I have sent you the name via email. I would not say it is backward and oppressive, just that there is a surveillance culture, both within universities and govt departments.

Recently, a furore was caused when over 100 Police were found to have porn on their conputers. Three were prosecuted for having "objectionable material" stored on their HDs. This is quite common and internet access to pornography is sufficient for dismissal in most workplaces. BDSM sites would be considered the same. This Professor did most of his research from hoime but made the mistake of telnetting into his uni machine and downloading "porn" with HEC approval. I'd be interested to know where he is if you track him down. He left at the beginning of this year officially.

East Carolina University from 1980 to 1987 and then University of Southern Mississippi (can't get more "deep") from 1987 to my departure to private research in 1990. You'll notice they are both public institutions

For example, USM had openly gay professors and I published several papers on erotic images while I was there. ECU had a gay students group and also had a course in the English Department on erotic literature.

So do you know of any Canadian examples ?

My undergrad minor was in sexuality. I didn't have to consult many theses during my undergrad. My grad is in education, far removed from sexuality. But I'm sure all Canadian theses relating to BDSM could be found on that database. All you need to do is enter key words. If you need a tutorial on how to search database directories, please let me know and I'll forward you one.

You can't get a PhD in BDSM any more than one can get one in Chinese Television News. The doctorate is granted in a broad field such as sociology, psychology or even sexology. For example, my doctorate is in Mass Communications. After three years of intense classroom and seminar study past the Master's level, I selected a topic of study where I thought I could find some answers no one else had found. In my case, that was the state of internal Chinese television news boardcasts just after the fall of the Red Guard era. That led one year of research in The People's Republic of China and more months of writing followed by a review by a board of experts to determine if my methods were valid and my findings original.

So when people are said to have BDSM doctorates, it means, probably, that the topic of their dissertation was on some aspect of BDSM. Actually, the degree itself is probably offered in some other recognized and broader field.

I don't think she meant you get a degree in bdsm but that you could study it through different departments -- I can think of a few: sociology, psychology, human sexuality. You could kind of do it in English/Literature I suppose or the History of Science if you looked the fields of study. You could even attempt a modern historical study via gender history or history of sexualities.

I'm certain here at IUB (where we have the Kinsey Institute) you could do it any of the above fields and probably get an internship at the Kinsey to help support your research.

Firstly, let me say i wrote a thesis and worked my ass off finding original source material; and rather resent the Op's question because i feel that learning to locate the necessary material and synthesize it is part and parcel of gaining an advanced degree. Sorry, but that's how i feel.

Second, i know universities have generally become hyper-sensitive to any -isms, and thanks largely to feminist academics (who publish some real trash) the atmosphere in universities is surveilence and zero-tolerance. i wrote to my two universities related to my degrees in law, asking the alumni ass'n director if we had any alumni in publishing houses or literary agents. One wrote back, offering to send my work to them in lieu of giving out their contact information. i cautioned him that the piece (just a short story) was erotic and he declined to let me forward it for fear someone would object to having it on his pc. Obviously, academia has gone off the rails; it used to be a place/time for examining ideas; now i guess they view themselves as the thought police. If i wanted to cope with that crap, i'd find an old-fashioned priest and burn his ears in confession.
