Status: offline 		origionally, it was the gay community, infact alot of us are LGBT....BUT theres a hell of alot of heteros in Leather now too....now its a set of values and traditions, and all are welcome.

Status: offline 		Leather is  not a gender thing , not a sexual orientation , not a gay bi or straight  exclusive community .Leather is not a  Top bottom  slave  Mistress/Master club either .
Like harry said he rarely if ever wears Leather yet he is  Leather , and i know men and women who proudly wear it daily " not too many in the AZ summer" . Now saying what its not you can also turn around and say all those groups of people can also be with in  the Leather community , it just not exclusive to one particular  group .Reading back through this thread alone there are some great descriptive s of  just what it means to be in the Leather fellowship if you were .

Status: offline 		Started out as a gay male community formed in large part to fill the need for gay men to be masculine. (prior to this remember all the public examples of gay men were "sissies", nelly's, feminen ...). Later the parralell of lesbian leather development was drawn in and then the pansexual BDSM'ers started to be drawn in a little at a time from their parralell world of kink.
Leather became not so much a gay thing as it was a perspective, a set of traditions and values and all those who want to join and who display the values and honor/ respect the traditions are welcomed.

As an alternative to the vest earning mentioned before, I'll cite my own families requirement to earn a vest.
Which BTW is generally not told to the person earning the vest until it has happened.
In my family the person earns their vest when someone writes a thank you note for a seriously significant service provided to them by the person.

For instance Elegant earned her vest when I recieved a hand written thankl you note from Master Doug Harris for the assistance she provided when his boy Bob Harris died and she went in and helped by cleaning out the boy's room.
The boy had been bed ridden for some time and the room was a disaster area. She took that burden on herself so that the other boys nor Master Doug would have to do that and they could instead focus on their needs.

That display of selfless service, was the requirement, it might have taken 1 year for it to happen it might have taken 15 years for it to happen. It's when the service reaches the point of motivating another Dominant to take the time to write that note, however long that takes.

Status: offline 		I'll cast a (meaningless) vote against creating a leather subcommunity on the boards.  Archer, Master Fire and Lady Pact are some of the only posters I try to read all the time -- and I've had enjoyable, educational, productive conversations with two of them on the other side, which never would have happened if we weren't posting on the same message board.  I could mention others as well, but these three have all identified themselves repeatedly as Leather.

I almost never go to the Gorean Zone, in part because there's a big "outsiders know nothing" thing going on.  That's not a slam against Gor.  It's just a fact that insularity tends to breed a sense of superiority.  As a result of everyone else being on the same boards, I've been invited to leather events -- and hell yeah, I'm going someday.  I would *love* to be the token vegetarian there.

Just because we have a Leather board doesn't mean we'd stop posting elsewhere. It just means we have a board that's more specific. Perhaps if there was one and you visited, you'd discover that you ARE Leather. :-) I mean, you posted and read THIS thread, after all.

Status: offline 		Exactly, Im not looking to segregate Leather from anyone else, I just want a place for all post and leather stuff to be in one place, so people can learn about What Leather Is. Read the whole thread ALOT of people dont know........and Im assumeing because the few who posted about not knowing what female is are the more outspoken ones...a whole lot more people want to know but may nit have the..voice to speak up? anyway you get my
meaning....

Status: offline 		Well, I admit it is true that I've spent a lot of time posting on the Ask A Mistress forum, despite being neither a female dominant nor a male submissive.  My concern is more not to create an online circlejerk of fragile-ego sophistry that is 99% devoid of real world connection.  I suppose if the leadership included the posters on this thread, I would have no objections.
