You forgot to add : "(...) in my opinion."

No, I did not.

His message is wrong.  Period. End of sentence. End of discussion.

Say's Who.....

You will do as you will.  That is a given, and as it should be.

My given remains thus, with neither alteration nor mitigation:

CL a mind is a terrible thing to waste, open yours to discussion and ideas might just enter....and that is the nature of things too!

Mike, debate is always welcome.  I would not post here if I did not desire debate.

Debate does not begin with a surrender of one's position, but with an emphatic and aggressive articulation of that position.

That is the order of things.

slvemike4u -> RE: Poll: Nearly half hearing too much about Obama (8/9/2008 5:22:16 PM)

And tell me CL how is debate possible when one party declares "End of discussion".This would seem to indicate a closed and intolerant viewpoint ,would it not.And that too is the nature of things....

The expected response to the thrown gauntlet is that it be picked up.

"Lay on, MacDuff....and damn'd be he who cries 'Hold! Enough!'"

"If we are inflicted with the tragedy of an Obama Presidency, you'll get some wonderfully soaring oratory"

Talk about pessimism ,Jesus,...that`s dark.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but this is a hit on the media, not Obama.

He`s doing what he does best.He can`t control the media(in spite of what paranoids think) and is staying on message.

He can`t help it if he looks and sounds good. It`s the shallow people(left/right and middle) that have been obsessiong with his persona and not what he`s saying.Including Sen. McParis.

His message is what bothers me the most.

His message is people are helpless, people are powerless, people are victims, and that government is always the solution and never the problem.

His message is one that denigrates the individual and attributes human worth solely to membership in this or that larger grouping.

His message is thinly disguised, eloquently phrased, glittered-up, gussied-up, socialist stupidity.

His message is wrong.

"helpless, powerless, victims, government is always the solution, never the problem, denigrates the individual "

Where the hell did you get that?

Please give us examples of this.Quotes please, not your opinion.

From "A More Perfect Union"
quote:

This time we want to talk about the shuttered mills that once provided a decent life for men and women of every race, and the homes for sale that once belonged to Americans from every religion, every region, every walk of life. This time we want to talk about the fact that the real problem is not that someone who doesn't look like you might take your job; it's that the corporation you work for will ship it overseas for nothing more than a profit.

The devil is in the detail...he always paints the individual in the passive role of being done to.

This message sounds fine and dandy....but it also lets the individual off the hook for everything bad that happens.  It's a slick, smooth, sickening way of pointing the finger of accountability away from his audience--Demagoguery 101.

Is panem et circenses far behind?

So tell me CL what do you see as the proper role for government beyond the "common defence" function.

The proper role of the federal government:
  1. Defend the Constitution
  2. Defend U.S. soil
  3. Provide a stable currency.
  4. Deliver the mail
  5. Maintain interstate transportation
  6. Settle interstate squabbles
Anything else is an abuse of power and needs to not be done.

I am a most dissatisfied citizen, and have been for a very long time.

Government is at best a necessary evil, and even then is more evil than necessary.

To quote Thoreau:  "That government is best which governs not at all."

Only if you agree with Hobbes instead of Locke, Rousseau, or Thoreau.

Hobbes was wrong, btw.

Irishknight -> RE: Poll: Nearly half hearing too much about Obama (8/10/2008 8:20:55 AM)

Hobbes was the most awesome stuffed cat ....  oops ..... wrong Hobbes.

Obama's message of "change" is the same lie that every candidate has used in their bid to get elected since elections were born.  The sad part is that the change turns into the same old shit after the election.  He is just another smeghead trying to get his piece if the pie by cheating us out of ours.
The last interview I watched with him really showed his true colors.  When asked a difficult question, he started his answer with "umm" and ended it with an attempt to change the focus to something else.  It was like the old "start talking about gay marriage to make them forget the issues" routine.
