Totally Freaked, Social Security Case/Vista OS Problem - 8/7/2008 7:10:23 PM

I just went and checked my mail and finally found what I have waited for, for two years. A letter from Social Security with a hearing date on my adult son's disability. I was screaming to the congresswoman's office because we weren't getting the hearing and he should never have been denied the first time around because he needed total 24/7 care. Brain damage doesn't just go away. So congress woman's office manager told me the hearing would be in the first part of September. I was good with that because I had some time to find the money to get him to a doctor to add to what we have already. I got a cd from social security showing the documents they have. No wonder he didn't get it the first time! The hospital, who has some fault in this did not send all his records. Just a few pages.

Now this letter says the hearing is on the 20th of this month. I am freaked. I couldn't wait for this. It has been total hell trying to support him and take care of him on my income. I have been strong... gotta deal... survivor mode for two years now and now I am friggin losing it! Is it because it all might finally be over? Robbing Peter to pay Paul and the threat of cut off's of everything. Is it that I am unprepared here because I can't get the documents I need? It's all of it I guess. But I can't calm down. I am normally all together and since I opened that letter, I can hardly breath and I'm more anxious than I think I have ever been. I think I am terrified they will deny him again on some stupid thing and this hell will continue.

Has anyone ever had anything like this happen and just at the end, freak out?

I have vista on my computer. I saved info on a cd and took it to kinko's to fax it to the social security and they can't do anything from vista. I have tried to save the documents in another format and it won't do it because I guess I had a trial version of the writing programs. Can I uninstall what is there and add word2006 on vista? I must have this done like yesterday. I am having problems with the vista, my recovery is full and I can't make back up disks, so I had them send me copies of the OS to redo it all, but I am stressed for time and my brain isn't working here. Help!

O Gawd Lockit, I feel so bad for you.  Yes I think it's normal to begin freaking out when a hearing date is finally set and then you realise the SSA didn't get all the documentation they need.  All I know to suggest is to call a social security lawyer who hopefully won't charge you 40% of all back pay to help you prepare for the hearing on time; I'd expect hospitals and such to respond faster to subpoeneas and the like than pleas from a patient's mother.  I'm so terribly sorry about your son's injury and will keep you in my prayers.

The congress woman's office just requested the records this week because they held it all back.  Maybe the request coming from them will put a fire under them.  I requested an itemized bill from corp. offices for the hospital so I could prove more with that, just in case they mess up again.  Talked to a lawyer and have to call him again tomorrow... but still I think the brain damage speaks for itself and I shouldn't have to pay a lawyer and work their system.  I am going to need all I can get of that money to take care of him.  It isn't like he can work again.  He has the mind of a five to ten year old... most likely the five, but he does know naughty jokes so seems older than five sometimes. lol

Thank you...

Lockit; just a thought but since all you really need are some subpoenas, maybe you could get help from Legal Aid?  I agree you should avoid paying a lawyer something huge for such a small amount of work.

Hi,

Yes you can add word2006 or MSWorks to your Vista. I hate Vista and will not use it. You can also send the docs in .rtf to someone you know who isn't using Vista and have them burn them for you. Also, have you tried sending the docs to your email, moving to a new folder and burning from there?

If I can be of any help, drop me a line on the other side.

Be Well,

EG

Thank you EvilGenie, I will try that.  I don't have anyone around here that can do it for me, but maybe this will work.  I don't have time to redo OS and all that now.  May be part of why I am freaking.  I have thirteen days to do this!

You're very welcome. I am in freak out mode of my own so I know where you're at. If none of those work please let me know. I have programs that I am able to send to you via download.

Just hang in. Somehow we seem to make it through each day.

Best,

EG

Without redoing the OS right now... my recovery is full and I can't do defrag or anything... can't make back ups and unfill the recovery.  Was waiting until someone came to see me next week to work on it, but I don't have time to wait now. lol  So downloading anything is iffy...

If you are trying to save a Word 2007 document that can be read in earlier versions, click "save as" on the file drop down (or the windows logo in the circle that took the place of the drop down, I'm still getting used to it as well) .  You'll see an option to save as Word 97-2003 compatible document.

If that's NOT what you are trying to do, but you're still having some sort of compatibility issues being able to open the file at kinkos, I would suggest downloading a .pdf print driver.  That installs a virtual printer that doesn't actually print anything, but changes any file into a .pdf--which can be read by any computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader. I know of two that are free.  One is called "cute pdf", and I have never used it personally but have talked to others who have. I don't know if it's vista compatible.  The other is pdf995, and that's the one I use. (There's also a microsoft version, but I tend to avoid the microsoft version when possible.)

If I've totally missed the mark and misunderstood your question, let me know.

And best of luck with the SSA.

Find someone with a laptop that uses XP as an OS and borrow it for a wek or two?

You might try downloading OpenOffice from the MS website which is suppose to work for free on Vista OS.

Lockit,

Do you know how to do a  partition? You'd make a new drive, drive D. Then you can move things from C Drive into D and create more operating space. It is a fairly simple thing to format. OpenOffice is supposed to be okay though the way you have described things, it is too big for you to download as things stand.

If I can find a way to deal with the recovery, I can install word2006.  But I still can't print anything becasue of the vista and my printer.  I downloaded the drivers and all that but it still won't work.  I am afriad to do much, as strokes have caused some damage with me and I don't understand even the little I understood a year ago, about all this.  Terrified to do a partition and such. lol  Yikes... I am scary! lol  Anything I knew well before.. I still know... but things I didn't know well... gone.

Are you doing a restore and recover or something?

No restore or whatever, I tried that before and that didn't help.  The tech told me I had to do back ups on everything to fix the recovery problem.  But error things come up when I try to do the backups and my dvd's are messed up.  Can't afford to ruin more dvd's to get the error message again to call tech.  So was going to reinstall the OS and start over.  Now I don't have a lot of time to do it.

Someone is telling me that there was a booting problem and everything got written onto my hard drive twice and recovery was made full.  I need to go offline for a bit to reboot and deal with it.  God... tech idiot here.

Reinstalling the OS should only take a couple of hours maximum. What does the error say when you try to back up? This is why I partition my own and in my business as nothing needs to be backed up, just moved to the new drive where it remains safe during a restore/reinstall.

Lockit, you need to step away.  This is the kind of situation where you'll do one wrong thing and erase the data.

Get your advice from r/t people who know what they are doing, not from a kink-site efriend.

Understand that by going over heads to legislative offices, you have pissed people off.  They will be looking for a justifiable denial.  60% is better than nothing, and if you can't go in there in complete competence, then pay someone who can.  Try getting a referral from a law professor in the area.

       Good luck, and best wishes.

I am an MCSE/A and know what I am doing. It is also bull that one keystroke will erase anything. It takes a great deal more to do that. Someone's in need, I try to help doing what I get $50.00 or more an hour to do for nothing. I could be watching something I wanted to see right now instead. But I am not. To my knowledge, she is doing nothing but answering questions.

I know how things are in dealing with the SSA. I finally am going through Binder and Binder myself. I figure they get 25% (limited by law) of any back pay I have coming, but, I get the other 75% and that's 75% more than I have now if approved.

A fairly simple solution to your problem would be to buy an inexpensive flash drive (1Gb) and download your documents to it and then go to the local library and ask if they could help you print or email those documents.

Good luck.
