This doesn't look like it will end well. I wonder if the new empire will call itself the USSR?

Have you seen any of that video...all I can say is WOW.  Georgia is claiming to have shot down 4 jets already, and with the number of missiles fired, the damage is going to be interesting to find out.

It's bad news; looks like Georgia was trying to stop Ossetian separatists and that Moscow is on the side of the latter, or at least that the Russians are using this conflict as an excuse to interfere and impose their will on the Georgian government.

Russia's pissed off at Georgia for getting closer to NATO and the EU... I hope this doesn't turn into an other Chechnya :-( .

The old soviet hardliners did not just disappear because the former government fell. They are still there, and still have power. The Cold War never stopped, it just changed somewhat.

Letting the cold war start again?.... Yes.

He is the president,... isn`t he?

Leader of the free world and "guy you`d rather have a beer with" and all?

This, on the day he`s cuddling with the Chinese,(Russia`s ally against us) ,on the day the Olympics start.

Interesting times.....

It'll be interesting to see how Obama and McCain say they would handle things . . . or see what kind of vague statements they make about it.

Since you asked.

quote:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/08/08/mccain_calls_for_russia_to_pul.html

"The news reports indicate that the Russian military forces crossed an internationally recognized border into the sovereign territory of Georgia. Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory. What is most critical now is to avoid further confrontation between Russian and Georgian military forces. The consequences of Euro-Atlantic stability and security are grave. The government of Georgia has called for a cease fire and for resumption of direct talks on South Ossetia with international mediators. The U.S. should
immediately convene an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to call on Russia to reverse course. The U.S. should immediately work with the E.U. and the OSCE to put diplomatic pressure on Russia to reverse this perilous course that it has chosen....."

and

quote:

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/08/08/1255737.aspx
Obama's campaign released the following statement on the situation:
“I strongly condemn the outbreak of violence in Georgia, and urge an immediate end to armed conflict. Now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint, and to avoid an escalation to full scale war. Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected. All sides should enter into direct talks on behalf of stability in Georgia, and the United States, the United Nations Security Council, and the international community should fully support a peaceful resolution to this crisis.”

You are absolutely right that whoever the President is, must be accountable for the relations with other countries. I just hope that you are not so obsessed with Bush, that you miss some others that also have responsibility in this.

I also agree that I do not like the fact that we are so cozy with China, and that they own so much of our debt.

As far as what Russie does to Georgia, it is not our affair but we could try and exert some political influence to mitigate how severe that situation may become.

Of course one can`t blame Bush for what the Russians do.

I just wish we had a guy at the poker-game of world politics ,as smart as the other guys there.

I don`t think Bush is respected or feared by our friends or enemies. He`s not  going to be able to influence much, unfortunately.

What would a guy like JFK do right now?

Just tell me what the difference is between what Russia does in its backyard and what the US does in its backyard?

Not a lot from my perspective.

Nothing. Russia is not the enemy today that they were in 1963.

Nothing anyone can do. The United States does not have much leverage in that area of the world. Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia are stiill very much in Russia's sphere...not ours. And Russia is very protective of that area because going back to the days of Joseph Stalin, those countries act as a buffer to protect Russia from Turkish nationalism and from muslim extremists. Tensions and conflict between that area and Russia are certainly nothing new.

In the end, the US cant do much other than send diplomats and peace envoys. Russia is not an enemy and we arn't going to threaten them.

Russia just invaded a sovereign nation. A sovereign nation that has tried very hard to join the western developed world. Think back to those bygone days of 1990 and 1991. We definitely had something to say about one nation invading and conquering another back then.

If the US was not wasting blood and capitol in Iraq rapid reaction forces could be deployed to Georgia and Putin would have to decide whether war with Nato was desirable simply to gain control of Georgia.

Your suggestion that Russia is not our enemy shows an fairly unbelieveable lack of knowledge of the world. Putin's Russia is our enemy and nothing about that will change while he controls Russia.
