And I find it greatly disturbing how casually others will toss it overboard when it conflicts with their politics.

Like when?

Well, let's see, Kitten.  There was that amazing series of articles in Ms., on bringing women in Afghanistan into the 21st century from the 12th, and how to make those gains permanent.  Oh, wait... that didn't happen.  Well then, the days of rage, following the assassination of Theo Van Gogh for daring to expose the horrific violence against women in his film.  Ummm... hang on...  Oh yeah, Nancy Pelosi's pledge to get Pashtoun and Farsi speaking domestic violence counselors into every major city.  No that never happened either.

Like when?  Like not since it might create the impression they supported Bush policies in any way, shape or form.

Its not the IOC that is sexist anyhow see unrelated/related storey:

It's all politics and I wonder when these people have anytime to get work done between jostling for position.

Good article, dc, thank you.

It is also a matter of percentages and numbers, over 50 countries listed here as being Muslim.  Whether or not each country has a delegation to the Olympics and has male and female athletes participating would require more research.

...so why are counties like Saudi Arabia and Syria allowed to compete when they ban women?

It's all about embracing cultural diversity FDD, didn't you know that ?

I guess this means he`s now for affirmative action, which benefits more women then minorities.
he-he

.
Actually I have always been for Affirmative Action to correct the inequalities of the past.

If two people of exactly the same performance and qualifications vie for the same position, I see no reason why the position should not be given to the historically grieved party. Affirmative Action is a noble ideal and should be used properly, though, it life should to be limited. It should never be view as a human right or non ending mandate, less it becomes the same thing it was meant to cure.

What I am not for however is quotas, or choosing less qualified persons or persons of other means (ie rich minority kids, getting race based scholarships) getting positions simply because of their sex or race.

Some hopeful news on this subject: Muslim Sportswomen Gain Standing in Beijing.

quote:

Thirty-five all-male Olympic teams competed in Barcelona in 1992 compared to 26 in Atlanta in 1996, 10 in Sydney in 2000 and five in Athens 2004. There are at least four all-male delegations sent to Beijing, but a tally is not yet available.

This is the first year Oman and the UAE have sent women to the Games.

Obviously any discrimination is wrong, but it's heartening to see some progress.

Yes, I believe UAE has two Royal Princesses this year.

Having their father as the counties Prime Minister probably helps wouldn't you say

I'm sure it does.

Still, two women (even if they are princesses, or the UAE equivalent) is more than zero, which is what I think they sent to Athens.

Interestingly, the UAE website has the female athletes front and center. Not sure if this is spin, genuine pride, or both.

Just playing a little bit of the devils advocate… maybe the majority…remember that word...of Muslim women agree with their government and their religions position.

Then it would not be prohibiting them from competing but following to the wishes of the majority.

(fast reply to both)

Would you ever allow a majority white nation to ban black athletes?

Seriously... why do some find sexism more palatable than racism?

There are no doubt tens of thousands of Saudi women who wish they could 86 thier burkas and vails and compete in athletics.

No.

(N.B. I didn't say I agreed with Butch, merely that his point was interesting.)

I am refering to the fact that many simply choose overlook the misogynistic views on women (sexism) that they would not countenance toward similar racial views.

I thought that was so funny and interesting at the same time.  Nepotism, yet perhaps it will open doors for others.

Just read the thread... One stands way out, two if you count yourself.

I dare say, that there would be a bigger out cry if Saudi Arabia banned black athletes then there is when the actually do ban women athletes.

Clearly, by policy, the IOC would not allow them to competein The Games if they ban racially, but they are given free reign to ban sexually.

I just read the thread twice and don't see what that has to do with anything else that was said here. I'm confused.
