FatDomDaddy -> Why Can't Many Muslim Women Compete in The Olympics? (8/10/2008 1:14:37 PM)

South Africa and Rhodesia were rightfully banned for their Aparthied policies toward sports, so why are counties like Saudi Arabia and Syria allowed to compete when they ban women?

This would seem like a no brainer by South Africa's ban started in 1964 and lasted unlil 1992 so why in 2008 are women being allowed to be treated like second class citizens in a competition that is suppose to be about far higher ideals?

Other Muslim counties allow women to compete freely, so it would seem that this is a purely misogynistic policy.

It's hard to play beach volleyball when wearing a hefty bag?

The oily rule: he who has the oil, makes the rules.

I don't think that quite cuts it bear. South Africa was intwined into the politics of international money in ways Saudi Arabia or Syria can only dream about when they were banned in 1964.

Iran, has women competing, Jordon, Turkey, several others too...

These policies should not be allowed by the IOC but they are clearly ignoring the sexism in some. some,  Islamic countries.

Why don`t you ask this guy(w/ the Saudi king)?

NeedingMore220 -> RE: Why Can't Many Muslim Women Compete in The Olympics? (8/10/2008 1:51:13 PM)

Very good point.  I was annoyed watching the athletes marching in and hearing the commentary that women were not permitted to play sports.  It's racism vs. sexism being an issue.  The sexism stems from supposed religious reasons, so perhaps the IOC won't touch that?

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Why Can't Many Muslim Women Compete in The Olympics? (8/10/2008 1:54:11 PM)

Is that guy a member of the IOC?

From what I undersand of ICO and United States civics, the man with the Saudi King will be out of office in five months, never to old power or conduct United States business again so I am not sure what he has to do with the topic, while the IOC will go on planning Games in 2010, 2012 and beyond.

From the BBC report;

"Sport is banned at girls state schools. There is no federation that organises women's sport and few stadia that are open to them. "

And this.

"No-one from the Saudi Olympic Committee was available for interview."

Big Surprise that eh?

I welcome Fatdomdaddy to go to Saudi Arabia and do something about this, forthwith.

We need good, brave men like him to make a stand against sexism in Saudi Arabia.

Picking on the poor IOC seems unproductive,in the freedom spread`n effort.

I don`t think this is quite the same thing as Apartheid.

Anyway, what pressure did the IOC exert to help end Apartheid?

I never thought of them as political.I never thought of sports as political.Oh well.

Any suggestions on what steps the IOC can employ, to get Russia out of Georgia?

The Georgians(our allies) could use all the help they can get right now.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Why Can't Many Muslim Women Compete in The Olympics? (8/10/2008 2:11:57 PM)

So Sexism is OK but Racism is not.

Gotch ya Owner, makes sense now.

Raechard -> RE: Why Can't Many Muslim Women Compete in The Olympics? (8/10/2008 2:18:48 PM)

What you are all forgetting is that the IOC isn't the same organisation it was and is more like a money making operation now rather than the self righteous organisation of the past. It's all about the TV rights, advertisement rights, merchandising. To compare the past organisation which had no real interest with any of that with the modern one is ridiculous. If these countries weren’t banned by the past organisation I can only assume the sexism back then wasn’t so well documented and known about as it is now.

(Edit: not for no)

lol never said that.Jeezzz, you`re salty today.

Bigotry is bigotry, what ever form it takes.Sexism is one of many ,many forms of bigotry and no less vile.

How does the IOC, interject themselves and meddle into a countries cultural flaws?

This is interesting.

I love it when certain men discover their feminist calling all of a sudden, simply because it coincides with their political agenda [8D] .

And I find it greatly disturbing how casually others will toss it overboard when it conflicts with their politics.[:'(]

Some hopeful news on this subject: Muslim Sportswomen Gain Standing in Beijing.

quote:

Thirty-five all-male Olympic teams competed in Barcelona in 1992 compared to 26 in Atlanta in 1996, 10 in Sydney in 2000 and five in Athens 2004. There are at least four all-male delegations sent to Beijing, but a tally is not yet available.

This is the first year Oman and the UAE have sent women to the Games.

Obviously any discrimination is wrong, but it's heartening to see some progress.
