Personally I think that was just a dumb statement.  I don't think he is racist, just stupid.  He may be a bigot and not even know it.  If it really bothers you, find someone else to hang out with.

FR,
Jeff Gordon is a racist, so is Dale Jr. How do I know? Because they make their living racing! After all, if one makes their living in the arts, they are an artist, if in the sciences, they are a scientist...Hence all NASCAR drivers are racists.
Ethnicity, Race, or whatever the hell else you want to call what color wrapper people come in is part of life, but it's carried to extremes on all sides by waaayyyyyyy too many pee-pul. An example, almost no one thinks it odd, or unusual that the NAACP or LULAC exists, or that there is a Black History month to honor the contributions of folks like George Washington Carver, or  Fredrick Douglas, No one finds it unusual that there are scholarships set up that you must be of a certain ethnic background to qualify for. Almost no one considers those ideas "racist". BUT, if someone were to set up the National Association for the Advancement of White People, or the United Anglo College fund,  or celebrate White History month
That MUST be racist......

Perhaps you could contribute to your white history month notion by linking to some credible sources on all the generations of white Americans held in chattel slavery? Or denied the right to vote, etc?

After all, you were assuming ceteris parabus, right?

First, Black History month is not "everything that was wrong about slavery and the Jim Crow era month. "  Most black folks I know (and having spent the last 4 years in Shreveport, I know a LOT) will be the first ones to point out the contributions of people like Carver (who happens to be one of My personal heroes) MLK, and other luminaries to America as a whole, not specifically in regards to their work just on behalf of other black people during the War. or establishing equal voting rights, etc. I have no more problem with this than I do with St. Paddy's day parades, or enjoying a Cinco de Mayo celebration. (which is a big deal in Texas)
La Raza has scholarships that you must be of Mexican or Latin American descent to qualify for, yet I've never seen in the history books where generations of Mexicans were held in chattel slavery.  But I don't see anyone loudly denouncing them, or the practice of gathering money, primarily from people of that ethnic background, to disburse to young people of the same ethnic background to obtain higher education.
Last I checked, Equal Rights, meant exactly that, the same rights for EVERYBODY.  Nobody is denying that slavery happened, or that it was wrong, or that the Jim Crow era occurred, and was equally wrong. No one that I am aware of is suggesting those things be forgotten. I can't speak for others, but I'm not suggesting that Black History month be done away with, BUT if you want to be perfectly fair and equal there should also be White History month, NAAWP, UACF, and the other things mentioned. If it's wrong for white people, it's wrong for blacks, asians, latino's etc. To say otherwise is to become a NASCAR driver [8D]

                              I wish you well,
                                                      Shreve

Groups wanting anopportunity to recover from centuries of being placed at a disadvantage,  are not the same as racist groups hiding behind claims of working for the 'advancement' of white people...such as say, David Dukes 'NOFEAR' group and their 'White history', 'White Pride', 'White Power'  etc.

Comparing that to the UNCF, or to a St. Patrick's Day parade is specious logic, because as I pointed out earlier, all things have never been equal.
And no, 'Equal Rights' does not mean continuing to give the majority what they need to stay on top of those they have been oppressing.

Bias is bias.

Alumbrado -> RE: Racist or not? (8/17/2008 8:26:31 PM)

So it is. Are you playing the 'moral relativism' card? [:D]

American women only got the vote in 1920, fifty-two years after African American men.

We still have slaves in this country ... of all races, but mostly white children. Go look on the boulevard of broken dreams in any American city, and you will find them.

Daes -> RE: Racist or not? (8/18/2008 9:57:02 AM)

<.< I wouldve thought that was hilarious.

My roommate cracks a bunch of jokes based on race but do I believe that makes him a racist? No. He doesnt think himself "better" than anyone else just because he's one ethnicity or another. It's just his form of humor and I don't mind it. He says stuff about mexicans, asians, does it offend me? No. I think its funny >.> And I do it too.

It's all in context.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Racist or not? (8/18/2008 10:20:32 AM)

No I was thinking more along the lines of equitable rights card. The one without color, sex, religion, etc.

Actually American women, for those who care enough about the human condition to study the way inequality works, were still legally chattel in some states until the latter part of the 20th century.

And you are claiming that black Americans caused that to happen to white people exactly how, again?

I claimed no such thing.

You asked a direct question and I gave a direct answer. Who was enslaving or denying the vote to whom, was not part of your question, nor was it part of my answer.

Alumbrado -> RE: Racist or not? (8/18/2008 7:52:11 PM)

You are being disingenuous, it was the crux of my question, which you specifically edited out.

caitlyn -> RE: Racist or not? (8/18/2008 8:12:38 PM)

Well, thank you for changing your response from dishonest, to disingenouse.

Both are incorrect though. I clipped this question:

"Perhaps you could contribute to your white history month notion by linking to some credible sources on all the generations of white Americans held in chattel slavery? Or denied the right to vote, etc?"

Because I'm not a person looking to contribute to a white history month ... and for no other reason.

Aneirin -> RE: Racist or not? (8/19/2008 4:07:45 AM)

Racism, the hate of other races is more about the racist than the hated. If someone feels the need to single out another to hate, is shows them as nothing but insecure, something to be pitied as the inferior human their actions make them.

Sad isn't it ?

And nobody is falling for you editing several words out of my posts to change the meaning, (essentially creating a forgery), simply because you repeat it.

The crux of my question was about pretending that black people could be held to the same standard as whites while ignoring the fact that all things were not equal.  i.e. blacks didn't oppress the white race in America as slaves and under Jim Crow for hundreds of years.

Deleting the 'all things being equal' part to alter that is your doing, and not at all honest.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Racist or not? (8/19/2008 6:21:16 AM)

Looks the same to me. Where were the words missing that you say? I just removed Shreve's part of the post.

Beats me ... from my point of view, all I did was remove a question that wasn't even addressed to me. [;)]

So now I'm dealing with a sock puppet, who has convenient blindness, and cherry picks for the fun of trolling?  Goodbye.
